Page 1 Cresthaven Star Chronicle Sherri Gorden, Principal Emily Madan, Assistant Principal Believe...Achieve...Succeed http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/cresthavenes/newsletter/ March 20, 2015 End of the 3rd Marking Period Can you believe that the end of third marking period is approaching already? During the this marking period, our students have been applying new skills in reading, writing and math. Students are using a variety of methods to show what they have learned. They are using technology to research topics and produce reports and power point presentations and to practice skills in reading, math and keyboarding. The use of the chromebook google education applications have also become a daily part of instruction for our students. As we prepare for the final quarter of instruction don’t forget to check in with your child’s teacher to stay up to date on assignments, and learning tasks that help to prepare them for daily instruction. Possible Extended School Year As of March 17, 2015, Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) exceeded the number of emergency weather days (snow days). The 2014-2015 school calendar has four snow days built in, so MCPS is three days over its allotted number of snow days. MCPS has applied for a waiver from the Maryland State Department of Education. The Maryland State Department of Education is expected to consider the waiver request at its meeting on March 24, 2015. Until MCPS receives a response from MSDE, parents are urged to plan for school year to be extended. For more information, visit School Contingency Calendar at http://montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/calendars/ Calling All Parents! We need your help with our upcoming Career Day! On Friday, May 1st from 9:30-11:30am, Cr esthaven ES will host a Car eer Day for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students! If you or someone you know is interested in speaking with students about your/his/her career, please complete the attached response form by April 1, 2014. Believe it or not I am already planning for next school year. I have received the staffing allocation for next year and thankfully we will retain our current teaching staff. Our staffing allocations are based on student enrollment, so I need to know how many students will return for the 2015-2016 school year. During the upcoming weeks I will ask you to share your plans for next year also. It is important that I know how many students to expect at each grade level to plan instruction and to identify teaching assignments. When you receive this request I ask that you send it back by the due date so we can be prepared to receive your child in the fall. Thank you for all of your support. Sincerely, Ms. Gorden Page 2 CALLING ALL PARENTS TO HELP WITH CRESTHAVEN’S ANNUAL . . . CAREER DAY FRIDAY, MAY 1st from 9:30-11:30 On Friday, May 1st, our school will be holding a Career Day for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students! We are in need of parent volunteers who are willing to speak with students about their careers. We would like for students to understand the connection between their academic learning and the tasks they might someday perform in the working world. This is also a great opportunity for students to learn about and explore the many different careers that exist in our community! In preparing for this exciting day, we need to know if you would be willing to come and speak to specific classes about your career. (Discussion topics may include: career description, information on training/preparation, most rewarding/least enjoyable parts of your day, etc.) More detailed information will be sent to you in the weeks to come. Please sign and return the form below indicating your willingness and availability to help with Cresthaven’s Career Day!
