A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
WOW! Great music, food, contests, dancing and face painting!
We experienced all those things and more at our fabulous Back
to School Picnic. Thank you to the PTA for providing our
families with such an enjoyable event!
Our staff members have been working hard discussing student
data and planning lessons during our grade level team
meetings. Our students are consistently demonstrating the core
values of respect, responsibility, dedication, and safety. Our
parents continue to show strong involvement (which we
LOVE) and dedication to foster the success of our students and
school. I appreciate the work of all stakeholders to make sure
the needs of our students are being met.
On a personal note...I took my first tennis lesson this past
weekend. Although my last name is Williams... I am definitely
not Serena or Venus. :) I must admit it was scary trying
something new at first, but I ended up having fun. Although I
was the most inexperienced player in the class, I ended up
having one of the best forehand swings!
As we start a new school year, I encourage everyone to try
something new. We learn and grow by challenging
ourselves...whether it's a new assignment, hobby, recipe, or
sport.
As always, I feel very honored to serve this community. It is my
hope that the hard work of our teachers, students, and parents
will lead to an increase in student achievement this school year!

UN MENSAJE DE LA DIRECTORA
Wow! Buena música, comida, concursos, baile y pintura de la cara!
Hemos vivido todas esas cosas y más en nuestro fabuloso Picnic de
Regreso a la eEscuela. Gracias a la PTA por proporcionar a nuestras
familias con un evento tan agradable!
Los miembros de nuestro personal han estado trabajando duro
discutiendo los datos de los estudiantes y planeando las lecciones
durante nuestro nivel de grados reuniones de planificación del
equipo.
Nuestros estudiantes son constantemente demonstrando el núcleo de
los valores de respeto, responsabilidad, dedicación, y seguridad.
Nuestros padres continuar mostrando una sólida participación (que
nos encanta) y la dedicación a fomentar el éxito de nuestros
estudiantes y de la escuela. Yo aprecio mucho el trabajo de todas las
partes interesadas para asegurarse de que las necesidades de
aprendizaje de nuestros estudiantes se están cumpliendo.
En lo personal ... tomé mi primera clase de tenis este fin de semana
pasado. Aunque mi apellido es Williams ... definitivamente no soy
Serena o Venus. :) Debo admitir que daba miedo probar algo nuevo al
principio, pero acabé con diversión. Aunque yo era el jugador más
inexperto en la clase, acabé teniendo una de las mejores swings de la
derecha!
Al comenzar un nuevo año escolar, yo animo a todos a probar algo
nuevo. Aprendemos y crecemos al desafiar a nosotros mismos… si
se trata de una nueva asignación, pasatiempo, receta, o el desporte.
Como siempre, me siento muy honrado de servir a esta comunidad.
Es mi esperanza de que el duro trabajo de nuestros maestros,
estudiantes y padres, pueden llevar a un aumento en el logro
estudiantil este año escolar!

30th season, offering students in grades K–12 free
homework assistance from MCPS teachers. Students can contact HHL teachers from 4:30–6
p.m. on the phone or 4:30–9:30 p.m. online on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 69:30 p.m. online on Mondays.

NEW SPANISH MULTIMEDIA TOOLS
Strengthening Communications with Spanish-speaking Families
MCPS has launched new multimedia tools that will enable Spanish-speaking families to more easily
engage with schools and the district. The new resources include a redesigned website; a mobile app;
and a Facebook page, all in Spanish. The redesigned website features new content as well as an expanded amount of information that had previously been available only in English. A new series of videos—
Consejos para Padres—provides helpful tips for parents delivered by Spanish-speaking MCPS staff
members. Other video highlights include Momentos Informativos, which provide news and information about MCPS, and Guia para Padres, videos that help parents understand and navigate the
school system. The videos will be available on the website and on MCPS TV, as well as on social media
sites, including YouTube, the MCPSEspanol Twitter feed, and the new Spanish Facebook page
(www.facebook.com/mcpsespanol). The videos also will be available on the new Spanish mobile app,

CALENDAR POLICIES
The Board has tentatively approved Policy IDA—School Year Calendar. This is a new policy that will
guide procedures to develop, adopt, and disseminate a school year calendar. Policy IDA will ensure that
the MCPS calendar meets the educational and operational needs of the district and complies with all relevant state and federal laws. To learn more about Policy IDA and provide feedback, visit the MCPS website and search “policies”. Comments are due by October 9.

CENTERS FOR THE HIGHLY GIFTED: GRADE 3 STUDENTS
Applications for the Elementary Centers for the Highly Gifted (HGC) were recently mailed directly to all
parents of Grade 3 students in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). This is a reminder that if
you are interested in having your child considered for the HGC, you must complete the
application and return it by November 6, 2015, to:

MCPS has developed a new guide that answers many of the frequently asked
questions about the accommodation of students’ religious beliefs and practices
in school and during school-sponsored activities. The publication, Guidelines
for Respecting Religious Diversity, was developed in collaboration with the
Montgomery County Executive’s Faith Community Working Group and other
stakeholders to provide clear information for students, families, staff, and the
community. MCPS is committed to promoting respect and appreciation for the
religions, beliefs, and customs of its diverse student population. The publication has been translated in eight languages—Spanish, Chinese, French, Vietnamese, Korean, Amharic, Farsi, and Arabic, and is available at

On October 12, we will celebrate our annual Open House for families.
This will include time to see your children working in their classrooms
and time to visit informally with their teachers (Meet and Mingle).
Each grade will have a scheduled time, so that teachers are available
for Meet and Mingle. As soon as the schedule is finalized, the information will go home to parents. We look forward to seeing you there!
El 12 de octubre, celebraremos nuestra Casa Abierta anual para las
