Students must be between the ages of 16 and 30. You will need to write an essay of between 500 and 1000 words on the following topic: Describe your educational career and life goals. Xi Sigma Omega HBCU Scholarship $4,000 over 4 years February 29 The Xi Sigma Omega HBCU Scholarship is awarded to seniors who plan to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). They must be able to document an exceptional number of service learning hours with outstanding community service; demonstrated leadership in organizations; and, must have a 3.0 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale or a 4.0 out of a 5.0 scale. The Golden Soror Scholarship is for seniors who plan to attend a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). The Ola Carter Berry Scholarship is awarded to seniors with need and who demonstrate outstanding accomplishments. The Bernadine M. Pindell Scholarship is awarded to seniors majoring in mathematics or engineering and demonstrate outstanding academic achievement. The Partica Moore-Batten Scholarship is awarded to a senior who is pursuing a career in education. The Clive Jackson, Beatrice Crutchfield and Ola Carter Berry Book Awards will also be awarded to graduating seniors. Candidates must possess an interest in business or entrepreneurship, as demonstrated by past and present volunteer, professional, and educational experiences. April 29 Graduating seniors from high schools in the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area and surrounding counties, planning to pursue environmental careers. You must be accepted prior to receiving the award, into a 4-year bachelor's program in an acceptable field of study by an institution of higher learning. Acceptable areas of study are: environmental sciences, environmental engineering, biology, chemistry, civil engineering, chemical engineering, or natural resource planning; other environmental areas will also be considered. There are also several other scholarship available to the Jewish Community. Applicants must be: A high school senior at a Montgomery County public high school; a U.S. citizen or working toward citizenship; and, accepted into an accredited four-year undergraduate program, vocational school or community college. Decision is based primarily on financial need. Recipients are eligible for 1-2 years of funding. Other scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $4,000 are specifically for Jewish students. This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving senior who has demonstrated a thoughtful, well-reasoned view of whether certain laws and criminal justice policies are just or unjust. The Kush Arora Criminal Justice Scholarship program invites all candidates who meet the previous criteria to apply. Applicants must submit a 1,000-word essay responding to one of the following prompts (they will be judged on the bestreasoned response, not on the position of the applicant): Provide a well-reasoned argument about whether a specific policy in the criminal justice system (your choice) is unjust and requires reform, or is just and should stay the same. Applicant must also submit a current transcript. Applications are available in the College/Career Center. 7 League of Educators for Asian American Progress (LEAAP) of Montgomery County Public Schools $1,000 April 15 To apply for this scholarship, applicants must: Be graduating MCPS high school seniors who plan to major in the field of education, members of an Asian American club, and/or students who have earned Student Service Learning hours supporting Asian American organizations; write a maximum one page essay (12 point font); minimum 3.0 GPA (must supply a transcript); list of student’s awards and activities; confirmation of Asian Club membership or SSL log; and, two recommendation letters from an administrator, a teacher, or a counselor. Application and information are available in the College/Career Center. 1st Scholarship: $5,000 (1 each) 2nd Scholarship: $3,000 (2 each) March 23 Applicable students can apply for both scholarships. Entrants must be seniors who both legally resides AND attends high school in Montgomery County and intends to enter a college/university following high school. For the essay, participants must write a 1000 word persuasive original essay on the chosen topic, not including citations. For the video, participants must produce a maximum of two minute persuasive original video on the chosen topic, not including the credits. The video must be in English. The scholarship will be paid directly to the college/university the winner attends and must be used to pay for tuition, fees, books and other course materials. NEW Legacy of Life Scholarship Essay and Legacy of Life Video Washington Regional Transplant Consortium (WRTC) 3 Honorable Mentions: $1,000 Each 2016 Maryland Emergency Management Association Scholarship $1,000 April 1 The Association’s objective is to promote Emergency Management in the State of Maryland and to assist students pursuing a career in Emergency Management or a related field. Applicant must be a senior attending an accredited Maryland high school. Scholarships will be awarded based on the quality of a student’s essay (500 word, double spaced), community involvement, student records, grades, financial need, and personal references. National Guard Bureau Officers’ Spouses Club Scholarships $1,000 April 1 To be eligible for this scholarship, applicant must: Be a high school senior; have a parent or guardian who is either an officer, enlisted or civilian working for the National Guard bureau in the VA/MD/DC area in a specific job (see flyer for details); and, write an original personal essay. Application is available in the College/Career Center. 8 Pan Hellenic Council of Montgomery County 20152016 Theresa C. Suggs/Roy T. Lyons Scholarship Scholarship amounts vary May 1 An applicant must: Be a graduating high school senior from the Montgomery County Public School System; be accepted by a Historically Black College or University (HBCU); and, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Applicant may be asked to participate in an interview by the Scholarship Committee of the Pan Hellenic Council of Montgomery County. Scholarship awards will be made after receipt of documentation verifying enrollment in the HBCU. Applications are available in the College/Career Center. Paul Robeson Scholarship 2016 $1,000 March 4 Applicants must meet the following criteria: Be an African American male senior; write a 500 word essay on the topic on the information sheet; write a 200 word biography on Paul Robeson; Submit an official high school transcript; submit 3 recommendation letters; describe your leadership qualities; have a minimum GPA of 2.5; and, provide a statement of financial need. Tregoning $2,000 Memorial Scholarship April 15 This scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who will be enrolled in a fulltime undergraduate program at an accredited university/college for the fall term. The recipient will be selected based upon demonstrated leadership, community service, character and academics (must have a minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale). Community service is an important criterion and candidates must have completed the minimum Montgomery County requirements for graduation. The scholarship can be used for tuition, books, or room and board, and is set up directly with the college. Applications are available in the College/Career Center. March 1 To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must: Be a senior pursuing a postsecondary (community college or 4 year college) education; must be both interested and engaged in serving their community; and, must have a 3.0 GPA or greater. The objective is to assist with the education of students pursuing careers in areas related to the goals of the IWLA. The League is dedicated to the protection and restoration of America's soil, air, woods, waters and wildlife. Appropriate curricula for applicants, therefore, must stress subjects related to conservation and the environment.
