Students must be between the ages of 16 and 30. You will need to write an essay of between 500 and 1000 words on the following topic: Describe your educational career and life goals. Eligibility requirements are: Students must be born outside the United States or have two parents born outside the United States; must be a graduating senior at a high school in D.C., Maryland or Virginia; and, must enroll full-time at an accredited public college/university for the 2016-2017academic year. April 30 To apply for this scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: Applicant’s permanent home address must be in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan area; applicant must be a graduating, college-bound high school senior pursuing an associate’s or bachelor’s degree; students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; demonstrated leadership with a service project or evidence of community service; and, applicant must be a U.S. citizen. Students who remain in good standing may reapply for this scholarship annually, provided they are still enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning. Application is a fillable MS Word file. Completed application forms can be sent as a pdf file or mailed. 5 Green Pest Services Scholarship $750 April 29 This scholarship is for high school seniors. Students must apply online; attach a student aid report showing income status of your household; must have a minimum GPA of 3.0; although not required, applicants are encouraged to submit recommendation letters and/or resumes. Applicants must submit completed application packets. Incomplete application packets will NOT be reviewed and will therefore eliminate you from the selection process. Xi Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. 6 Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA) $6,000 (8) May 2 There are 8 scholarships for $6,000 each available to all Montgomery County High School seniors. There are also several other scholarship available to the Jewish Community. Applicants must be: A high school senior at a Montgomery County public high school; a U.S. citizen or working toward citizenship; and, accepted into an accredited four-year undergraduate program, vocational school or community college. Decision is based primarily on financial need. Recipients are eligible for 1-2 years of funding. Other scholarships ranging from $1,500 to $4,000 are specifically for Jewish students. May 1 This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving senior who has demonstrated a thoughtful, well-reasoned view of whether certain laws and criminal justice policies are just or unjust. The Kush Arora Criminal Justice Scholarship program invites all candidates who meet the previous criteria to apply. Applicants must submit a 1,000-word essay responding to one of the following prompts (they will be judged on the best-reasoned response, not on the position of the applicant): Provide a well-reasoned argument about whether a specific policy in the criminal justice system (your choice) is unjust and requires reform, or is just and should stay the same. Applicant must also submit a current transcript. More information about applying for this scholarship can be found on the website: Maryland Federal Criminal Lawyer | Kush Arora Attorney at Law $1,500 - $4,000 (3) Kush Arora Federal Criminal Justice Reform Scholarship $500 Lavinia Engle Scholarship Fund Scholarships range from approximately $450 to $1,500 for the year April 15 Applicants must be: Female high school seniors; residents of Montgomery County, MD, for at least three years; enrolled or enrolling for the first undergraduate degree at a Maryland college/university; and, submit a one page written essay about your goals in life or what you hope to achieve through your education. League of Educators for Asian American Progress (LEAAP) of Montgomery County Public Schools $1,000 April 15 To apply for this scholarship, applicants must: Be graduating MCPS high school seniors who plan to major in the field of education, members of an Asian American club, and/or students who have earned Student Service Learning hours supporting Asian American organizations; write a maximum one page essay (12 point font); minimum 3.0 GPA (must supply a transcript); list of student’s awards and activities; confirmation of Asian Club membership or SSL log; and, two recommendation letters from an administrator, a teacher, or a counselor. Application and information are available in the College/Career Center. 7 Legacy of Life Scholarship Essay and Legacy of Life Video Washington Regional Transplant Consortium (WRTC) 1st Scholarship: $5,000 (1 each) 2nd Scholarship: $3,000 (2 each) March 23 Applicable students can apply for both scholarships. Entrants must be seniors who both legally resides AND attends high school in Montgomery County and intends to enter a college/university following high school. For the essay, participants must write a 1000 word persuasive original essay on the chosen topic, not including citations. For the video, participants must produce a maximum of two minute persuasive original video on the chosen topic, not including the credits. The video must be in English. The scholarship will be paid directly to the college/university the winner attends and must be used to pay for tuition, fees, books and other course materials. Instruction sheets can be picked up in the College/Career Center. April 15 To be eligible, a student must: Be an African American with permanent residency in Montgomery County; be a graduating senior, currently enrolled in a high school in Montgomery County; be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher on a 4.0 scale; be entering a college/university nursing program in the United States; and, be a United States citizen or permanent resident (must provide proof). Pemberton Scholarship Black Nurses Association of Greater Washington, DC Area Inc. 2016 Maryland Emergency Management Association Scholarship $1,000 April 1 The Association’s objective is to promote Emergency Management in the State of Maryland and to assist students pursuing a career in Emergency Management or a related field. Applicant must be a senior attending an accredited Maryland high school. Scholarships will be awarded based on the quality of a student’s essay (500 word, double spaced), community involvement, student records, grades, financial need, and personal references. Maryland Hispanic Achievement Scholarship $2,000 May 31 To qualify for this scholarship, applicants must: Not be more than a third generation Hispanic; have a 2.5 of higher GPA; plan to attend a Maryland college/university for the 2016-2017 academic year; have financial need; have significant contribution of voluntary community service during the last 12 months; and, established home residency in the State of Maryland for at least two (2) years prior to the award date of the scholarship. To apply, go to the website: http://montgomeryhispanicgala.org/scholarship.html NEW 8 Maryland PTA Scholarship $500 annually as the fund permits March 15 Applicants must: Be a high school senior; have a 2.75 unweighted minimum GPA; agree to prepare for a career in public education in the State of Maryland; obtain sponsorship of a Maryland PTA local unit in good standing (Paint Branch PTSA); and be a member of a Maryland PTA/PTSA (Paint Branch PTSA) local unit meeting the Standards of Affiliation. Recipients of the scholarship are free to choose the accredited college/university that he or she desires to attend. The recipient is also free to choose the content area in which he/she desires to specialize while working in education within the State of Maryland. National Guard Bureau Officers’ Spouses Club Scholarships $1,000 April 1 To be eligible for this scholarship, applicant must: Be a high school senior; have a parent or guardian who is either an officer, enlisted or civilian working for the National Guard bureau in the VA/MD/DC area in a specific job (see flyer for details); and, write an original personal essay. Application is available in the College/Career Center. National Naval Officers Association $1,000 March 25 These scholarships are intended to support the recipients during their freshmen year of college. Recipients must enroll full-time at a two or four-year accredited college/university; must be a minority senior; attained academic achievement; have positive community involvement and commitment; and, have financial need. Scholarship recipients select their major and attend the college/university of their choice without any obligation to join or affiliate with the military. Applications are available in the College/Career Center. May 1 An applicant must: Be a graduating high school senior from the Montgomery County Public School System; be accepted by a Historically Black College or University (HBCU); and, have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Applicant may be asked to participate in an interview by the Scholarship Committee of the Pan Hellenic Council of Montgomery County. Scholarship awards will be made after receipt of documentation verifying enrollment in the HBCU. Applications are available in the College/Career Center. Washington, DC Chapter Pan Hellenic Council of Montgomery County 2015-2016 Theresa C. Suggs/Roy T. Lyons Scholarship Scholarship amounts vary 9 $1,000 April 22 The Montgomery County Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI) Scholarship is open to all high school seniors currently enrolled in a Montgomery County high school in the 2015-2016 school year, who are planning to attend an accredited U.S. college starting in the 2016-2017 school year. Eligible students must have a minimum 2.75 GPA and be in good academic standing, as well as take and pass the attached quiz about the Project Management profession. These applicants will be considered for the “Open” Scholarship. The application packet is available in the College/Career Center. Robert M. Tregoning $2,000 Memorial Scholarship April 15 This scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who will be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program at an accredited university/college for the fall term. The recipient will be selected based upon demonstrated leadership, community service, character and academics (must have a minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale). Community service is an important criterion and candidates must have completed the minimum Montgomery County requirements for graduation. The scholarship can be used for tuition, books, or room and board, and is set up directly with the college. Applications are available in the College/Career Center. March 15 This scholarship fund was created by an anonymous Montgomery County resident in memory of several women in her family who lost their lives to breast cancer. You may be eligible if you: Are a resident of Montgomery County; are a member of a family with demonstrated financial need; are a high school junior, senior, or a high school graduate under 22 years old; have achieved at least a 3.0 GPA; are involved in a school, community, or athletic activity, ideally in a leadership position; have lost a parent or primary guardian to breast or ovarian cancer; and, wish to attend college. Fisher (5 scholarships Conservation & Environmental Studies will be given) Scholarship May 1 Open to qualified Montgomery County seniors who actively pursue advanced learning in the areas of conservation or environmental sciences. The objective is to assist with the education of students pursuing careers in areas related to the goals of the IWLA. The League is dedicated to the protection and restoration of America's soil, air, woods, waters and wildlife. Appropriate curricula for applicants, therefore, must stress subjects related to conservation and the environment. March 16 at 12 Noon The criteria for selection of scholarship awards are: Must be a resident of the state of Maryland; must be a United States citizen; must be seeking a degree in a nursing, medical or related health care field; a non-working recipient must maintain a minimum of 12 credit hours per term for undergraduate students and 9 credit hours per term for graduate students. Previous recipients of this scholarship may apply for subsequent awards. Checks will only be made payable to the recipient’s school.
