Dear Parents, Session IV of Rachel Carson Elementary School’s "Hopping Heron Clubs" begins the week of April 25. These clubs offer opportunities to explore new ideas, gain knowledge, and learn new skills. The program is offered to all students in grades Kindergarten-Fifth. Individual clubs are scheduled in six week sessions, unless otherwise noted. Students are to register for the club they wish to attend. Each club brochure specifies dates, maximum number of students, a description and grade levels offered. Club: HoopEd Basketball - Grades K-1 Description: The one hour instructional classes combine fundamental skills instruction with organized team competition, with the goal of providing an enjoyable and educational after school activity. Class Size: 30 Students Location: Gym Day of Week: Tuesdays Grades: K-1 Sponsor: Coach TBD The Hopping Heron Clubs will be offered Monday-Friday from 3:45-4:45 p.m. Parents will need to make plans to pick up their children. There is $60 fee for this club that is due on the first day of the session. Please make the check payable to HoopEd. Please complete the registration form on our school web site, as soon as possible. Registration will be on a first come, first served basis. We will continue to enroll students until the maximum number of students (class size) is reached. Registration ends April 21, at 3:00 p.m. There will be a minimal fee for each club to cover the cost of supplies and materials (see club description). PAYMENT SHOULD BE SUBMITTED ON THE FIRST DAY OF CLUB! We hope all of our students will participate and enjoy these programs! Students will learn the basic tools and knowledge to help them continue a hobby of craft making. Class Size: 20 students Day of Week: Thursdays Grades: 1-2 Sponsor: Paula Summerour There is a $60 fee for this club that is due on the first day of class. Please make the check payable to Paula Summerour. This after school club is for anyone looking to dance, cheer, and learn poms! Liz Corah is the cheer coach for the Washington Redskins Jr. Cheerleading team. Let your child get an NFL cheer experience right from his or her very school Class Size: 15 students Day of Week: Thursdays Grades: 2-5 Sponsor: Ms. Liz There is $60 fee for this club due on the first day of the session. Club: Avanti Athletics Soccer Club Description: As parents, we worry that our kids spend too much time in front of screens instead of developing good exercise and life habits. We developed Avanti Athletics to get kids excited about playing sports. The goal of our programs is to make sure every practice provides fun and interesting activities and exercises to develop our kids’ creativity and skills. While they are having fun moving and learning new skills, they also get the added benefits of practicing teamwork, discipline and respect at every practice. Class Size: 24 Students Location: Soccer Field/Gym Day of Week: Fridays Grades: K-3 Sponsor: Avanti Athletics There is $60 fee for this club that is due on the first day of the session. Please make the check payable to Avanti Athletics. Club: Tae Kwon Do Club – Grades K- 5 Description: Students participating in this club will practice the basic fundamentals of this traditional martial arts form. Emphasis is placed on developing coordination, balance, selfcontrol and respect. Children will learn the self-defense techniques of kicking, blocking and punching, as well as basic patterns and forms. They will also receive the appropriate belt for their level. Class Size: 20 students Day of Week: Wednesdays (8 Weeks) * Grades: K-5 Sponsor: Master Bheesung Choi There is $90 fee for this club that is due on the first day of the session. This includes the payment for a belt. Please make the check payable to Bheesung Choi. Club: RCES Vegetable Garden Club Description of Club: As part of the Rachel Carson Garden Club, children will have the opportunity to plant seedlings and aid their growth. The spring session will include discussions on gardening topics such as: Raised bed gardening, composting, growing strawberries, the importance of bees, and where we get our local drinking water. Expert speakers on these topics will visit the club to talk with the children. This is an opportunity for children to get their hands dirty while learning about where food comes from! The garden is located in the courtyard behind the school library. Parents are welcome to participate in the club with their child, but are not required to attend. Club: Rachel Carson Tennis Club Description: Tennis fundamentals, coordination drills and competitive activities are offered to build a strong foundation for continued improvement. Players are divided into small groups according to age and ability. Tennis scoring, tennis education, and introduction to beginner and advanced topics are presented. Class Size: 8 to 18 Day of Week: Mondays, in RCES Gym Grades: K-5 Sponsor: Montgomery TennisPlex coaches, including Eleni Fotaki and Richard Ehrenreich Preparation: Wear sneakers and comfortable clothes -tennis equipment is provided for FREE There is a $90 fee due on the first day of class.
