By the end of this meeting, you will have:
• Received information on high school graduation
requirements for the Class 2017
• Listened to changes in regards to HSA/PARCC testing
requirements
• Received information on changes to the SAT as well as
test administration dates
• Learned about the use of the Khan Academy to
prepare for the SAT
HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
22 CREDITS

English – 4 credits (English 9, 10, 11 and 12)

Math – 4 credits (1 Algebra, 1 Geometry, 2 Math Electives)

Science – 3 credits (1 Physical Science, 1 Biology, 1 Science Elective)

Social Studies – 3 credits (U.S. History, NSL, Modern World History)

Physical Education – 1 credit

Health - .5 credit

Fine Arts – 1 credit

Technology Education – 1 credit

Completer program – 2 to 6 credits (World Languages, Advanced Technology or Career Pathway)

Electives – To reach the total of 22 credits

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTSWHAT HAS CHANGED?
TERMINOLOGY
Maryland High School Assessments (MHSAs) designates the following
tests:
PARCC Algebra 1 (May 9-June 3, 2016)
PARCC English 10
HSA Biology
HSA Government
Algebra 1 and English 10
Participates in either HSA*or PARCC tests
*The final administration of the Algebra 1 and English 10 HSAs was
summer 2015. Students who need to fulfill Algebra and/or English 10
test participation requirements must take PARCC assessments in the
Spring 2016.
College and Career Readiness and College Completion
Act (CCRCC) of 2013
The CCRCC requires that all students take a MSDE approved
college readiness assessment by the end of Grade 11, beginning
in the 2015-16 school year. All Grade 11 students will take either
the SAT, ACT, or Accuplacer by the end of the school year. (It is
important to note that the PARCC English 10 and PARCC Algebra
1 assessments will still be administered per MSDE graduation
requirements.)
• For grade 11 students who do not take the SAT or ACT, the Accuplacer will
be administered by the end of the year.


• There will be an increased emphasis on critical thinking, problem
solving, and data analysis. The test is aligned to Common Core
Standards and is based on what students are already learning in
class.
Khan Academy, in partnership with College Board, is providing
personalized SAT practice for all students.
