PTSA NEWSLETTER 2011-2012
Vol. 13, No. 3, November 2011
President’s Letter
Principal’s Message
The first marking period of the year
ended on October 28. Report cards
will be distributed on November 10.
And parent-teacher conferences will
be held on November 10. Your
PTSA will support this process by
providing dinner for the teachers on November 10 between
afternoon and evening conferences.
With the holidays approaching,
the Tilden community is not only taking
part in celebratory school spirit events,
but is also thinking of others through
our canned dry foods drive. Daily,
students and staff are walking into the
building with bags full of goods and the Student
Government Association (SGA) is planning several
additional events that will allow us to give back and
support those in need.
Our second PTSA meeting this year is Tuesday night,
November 8 at 7:00 in the Media Center. We will start
the meeting with a presentation by Peer-to-Peer, an
organization that recruits excellent high school students as
tutors for middle school and other high school students.
At our business meeting, we hear reports from the
principal, officers and committee chairs. As a result of
discussions and actions at the last MCCPTA meeting, the
Montgomery County Board of Education issued two
policies for public comment. We will be reviewing these
items to prepare a Tilden PTSA comment.
I’d like to continue to thank all of our PTSA
volunteers, many of whom are performing their tasks in
the background at this time in the school year, and
acknowledge some of our PTSA volunteers for their
efforts this month. Karen Post and Lisa Spiwak staffed a
table at the entry to Tilden all day on October 10 for the
open house, welcoming parents and obtaining more
memberships. Committee chair Sarah Early continues to
organize and deliver great snacks each month at the Tilden
staff meetings.
The Parent-Teacher conferences will be taking
place on November 10th. If you have not scheduled an
appointment to meet with a teacher, I would like to remind
you that you are always welcome to email our teachers if
you have any questions or concerns. Email is a quick and
easy way to get feedback and a wonderful starting point
for a conversation. In addition to email, the administrative
and the counseling teams are available for conferences
anytime and we truly enjoy meeting and hearing from you.
The Character Education Committee, which
consists of students from each grade level and the SGA
members, is beginning to plan events and themes to
address anti-bullying. The committee is considering
assemblies, student created poster campaigns, PSA’s
during morning announcements, pledges, and strategies for
both victims and by-standers. If you have any suggestions
or guest speakers that you would like to recommend,
please let me know.

Our first Restaurant Night, organized by Becky Hutton,
was held at Wing Hut in Bethesda on October 28 and Ms
LaGrange spent two hours there talking to parents and
students. Becky has planned a second opportunity at
California Tortilla on November 29. Laurie-Anne Sayles
held one NAACP Committee meeting and has a second
scheduled at 6:30 P.M. in the Tilden Media Center on
November 8. Shari Campbell asks if you have signed up
for Tilden rewards for all retail incentive programs offered
by local merchants to Tilden. Leona Hiraoka has
collected of the spirit wear orders and is having our
clothing items made. Jodi Rose and Linda Brown
supported the incredibly busy and effective teacher, Amy
Domingos, in holding the first student dance of the year on
November 4. (I apologize for any omissions from this
list.)
The 6th and 7th grade trip to the National Zoo was a
success. Some students were excited that they did not get
lost, others loved the birds. Charlotte, a 6th grade student,
was excited to have learned that elephants use mud as sun
screen. While the students and staff dined at the zoo, one
of the managers complimented our students and pointed
out that they were the nicest group of students she has seen
at the zoo in years! Go parents! You are doing a stellar
job!
At this time of year, we are offered many
opportunities to help and support those less fortunate
families that are part of our greater community. The SGA
is collecting canned and dried foods for local needy
families. Please support this and other efforts advertised
on the Tilden List Serve (are you a member?).
While our teachers meet with students regularly
before and after school, as well as during lunch for one-onone support, I see so many parents here throughout the day
and well into the evening hours. A special thank you to all
the parents who come in to help and make copies for our
teachers, and assist staff during lunch and our afterschool
activities.
Tilden would not be the same without your
ongoing support.
Warm Regards,
Irina LaGrange
Finally, Happy Thanksgiving! Let us all remember
to give thanks for our dedicated Tilden teachers and staff
on this day.
