ESOL teaches academic language skills to support students’ success in the classroom. Students also learn and strengthen their skills to use language in socially and culturally appropriate ways. The four areas of focus are: Listening Comprehension, Speaking, Reading Comprehension and Writing. The Fox Chapel ESOL program has about 200 students who have roots in 18 countries and can speak or understand 24 languages other than English. The ESOL curriculum is aligned with the grade-level Reading/Language Arts curriculum. The Fox Chapel ESOL Team meets regularly with the gradelevel teams to ensure that ESOL services support and supplement content taught in the classroom. WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE ESOL SERVICES? Students who have documented that any language other than English is spoken in the home are given the LAS Links Placement Test to see if they qualify for ESOL services. If the assessment determines that ESOL services are needed, parents/ guardians are notified and the student begins to receive ESOL support. HOW ARE THE CLASSES TAUGHT? ESOL services are provided in the way that causes the least disruption to the student day. Our program model pulls small groups from classrooms at a time when students would otherwise be working independently. We also support ESOL students in the classroom during their grade-level writing block.
