Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
At California State University, Dominguez Hills
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
offers a unique opportunity for individuals who consider lifelong learning
an integral part of retirement. Our
program (known as OLLI at CSUDH)
consists of a range of experiences
including study groups, lecture series, cultural experiences,
workshops, special events and travel.
All adults are welcome to join OLLI at CSUDH. The organi
zation is designed primarily for individuals 50 years of age
or more. Courses and activities listed in this catalog respond
to the requests and interests of OLLI members who desire
to learn from each other as well as from University pro
fessors and community leaders. Learning occurs in a
supportive environment without grades, tests or requirements. Additional benefits of OLLI membership include
access to the University library, bookstore discounts, a
student identification card, and newsletters.
OLLI members represent all walks of life, a wide range of
experience and diverse backgrounds. Under the guidance of
the College of Extended & International Education, members
work together to build the OLLI organization by volunteering
for OLLI committees. Individuals also lead or facilitate classes
and workshops. There are plenty of opportunities for selfexpression, involvement and personal enrichment.
Become a part of the CSUDH family by joining OLLI at
CSUDH. We believe you will be energized by the mutual
support that such learning communities offer. I have always
believed in the concept of “K-80” education and OLLI at
CSUDH provides the perfect vehicle for lifelong learning.

• Back to the Future of Nutrition
Presenter: Joy Jurema, RN, MHA, Wellness Advocate and OLLI
member quotes Hippocrates (460 to 337BC), “Let food be thy
medicine and medicine be thy food.”
This presentation is a discussion of the Wahls diet, its Paleo
Principals, and the science behind them. The Wahls diet is a game
changer, not only for reversing an incurable disease (multiple
sclerosis), but for being a doable plan of optimal nutrition for all to
consume. For example, bean chili and Brussels sprouts with bacon
can be on your menu.
Thursday, October 16, 2014, 1:30pm - 3:30pm
• Aging Gracefully
Presenter: Frankie Stewart, M.A., CSUDH Alumna
and OLLI member
Aging is inevitable. What constitutes aging? There is no exact aging
process. As many seniors are asked about the process there are as
many different perceptions/answers. Some would say, “contrary to
popular belief the Golden years are not as Golden as we have been
lead to believe.” So, what can we do in a positive manner on this
road called aging? Attitudes, decisions, choices and acceptance are
but a few things to consider. We will discuss and explore various
concepts, share techniques with each other, and consider how to
age gracefully and successfully.

If you have been thinking about starting a garden, but don’t have

this fall as we explore

Techniques,” a DVD
Series from The Great
Courses. Expert Melinda
Myers is a horticulturist
and certified arborist,
TV/radio host, columnist,
and author. This course
will teach you “Designs

and ornamentals, cool-season changes and indoor gardens. We
hope this will help beautify your environment and promote hours
of enjoyment.
What Should We Do About Unemployment
and Low Wages, if Anything?
What kind of economy do we want for our kids, our kids’ kids,
and our friends’ kids? Must we feel responsible for the younger
generation? Do we like the idea of YOYO (you’re on your own)
better than WITT (we’re in this together)? How about: we’re
retired, so leave us alone?
Discussant Frank Stricker will present history and key facts related
to efforts to get more good jobs. Discussion will focus on societal
aspects of issues such as unemployment, which is often too high,
4 years post recovery, the quality of jobs held by the labor force,
average wages and inflation, percentage of adults with college
degrees, expectations of current retirees, and so on.

The World’s Greatest Geological
Wonders: 36 Spectacular Sites
NEW!
OLLI members have been asking for more courses on travel, so
we have turned once again to The Great Courses for assistance in
learning about sites we have often dreamed about traveling to or
been fortunate to have experienced. The focus of this travel course
is on “geologic wonders” which Professor Michael E. Wysession
describes as “something that is often rare or, at least, infrequent...
and makes us curious about its origins or formation...such as
waterfalls, glaciers, and so on.”
The scope of this DVD course takes us to the world’s most spectacular geological wonders as identified by Professor Wysession,
explains the forces that have formed them, and tells us the stories
that have grown up around them. The goal of this course is to
heighten our sense of wonder, awe, and respect for our planet.
The Great Courses promises that, “As we watch these lectures, we
will begin to notice countless new features of the geologic world
around us and our growing interest and fascination will add a new
dimension to our appreciation for the world in which we live.”

Plants of the South Bay
Have you ever wondered about the trees, bushes and plants you
see on the streets, lawns, business parks and open fields of the
South Bay as you drive by? Or are they just “plants?” Some of
these trees and bushes have colorful histories from the Wild West,
the Middle East, or Medieval times. Some are good to eat, some
are toxic, and some are just plain obnoxious, destroying sidewalks
or displacing native species. They all influence the climate, the air
we breathe, and the look of Southern California. Come and learn
more about the plants of the South Bay.
Howard Manning is a retired Cal/OSHA safety engineer with an MS
in Safety from USC. He has been a gardener, naturalist and forager
for over 50 years. He is a past member of the Northern Nut Growers Association (NNGA). For several years he owned and operated
“Harvestin’ Howard LLC,” which manufactured acorn tortilla chips,

For its time, this graceful Victorian lighthouse was a palatial structure, built with lumber from California redwoods and crowned with
a cupola. Inside it a 2,100-candle power light burned behind a
Fresnel Lens that was brought
by ship from around Cape Horn.
In the 1880’s, when Captain
George Shaw was keeper, the
lighthouse was the scene of
many parties.
The land was donated by Joe
Diego Sepulveda. Surrounded
by colorful flower gardens, it is
one the oldest lighthouses on
the west coast, built in 1874. Its beacon served as an aid to safe

OLLI’s Peer-led (Omnilore) Orientation
The peer-led program of OLLI at CSUDH is known as Omnilore.
The Study/Discussion Group is the core of the peer-led program.
Within the group, each member participates by choosing a topic
related to the subject under study, doing research on it and then
presenting the information to the group. Some Study/Discussion
Groups are structured around a book, which all members read
and discuss as part of the meetings. Groups meet for two hours
twice each month, 8 meetings for a total of 16 hours. The exact
time of each class is set by the participants.
Please note that the books listed for each course are only possible
candidates. Do not buy any until the pre-meeting and a decision
on the common reading is made.
Holiday periods are adapted to by individual class voting.
Call (310) 243-3208 for more details and payment information,
or visit the Omnilore website at www.omnilore.org.
Fall classes start in September and end in January, and
Spring classes start in January and end in April.

(ASA) Asia’s Cauldron: The South China Sea
When Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared on March 8th, most
Americans were unaware of the complicated relationships among
the countries surrounding the South China Sea, including China,
Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Fortunately, noted author Robert
Kaplan has just published a book about the area. Kaplan, who has
been named one of the world’s Top 100 Thinkers by Foreign Policy
magazine, describes the various nations, the conflicts brewing in
the region, and their implications for global peace and security. He
describes how the region’s geography fosters the growth of navies
yet impedes aggression and draws parallels between China’s increasingly aggressive behavior and the United States’ imperialism in
the late 19th century. S/DG members can prepare presentations on
any of the countries involved, or describe historical relationships.
(AWW) Aftermath of World War II
The end of the Second World War in Europe is one of the twentieth
century’s most iconic moments remembered fondly as a time when
cheering crowds celebrated in the streets. These images of victory
contrast with the anarchy and civil war that followed across the
European continent. With entire cities razed and more than thirty
million people killed, the social institutions—such as the police,
the media, transport, local and national government—were either
entirely absent or hopelessly compromised. Crime rates were
soaring, economies collapsing, and the European population was
hovering on the brink of starvation. The Second World War might
have officially ended in May 1945, but in reality it rumbled on for
another ten years. Savage Continent describes a continent racked
by violence, where vengeance, old tribal rivalries, and harsh realities
face large sections of the population.
Classes start September 1, 2014
and end December 31, 2014.

Six Amendments: How and Why
We Should Change the Constitution, by John Paul Stevens (April 2014)
2nd & 4th Tuesday,
p.m. – Room 5
Coordinators: Mary Watson
& Patti Ialongo
(CON) Amending The Constitution:
How and Why We Should Change
The United States Constitution is perhaps the greatest political
document in history, yet our nation is not the same as it was when
the Constitution was ratified in 1781. Our founders could not have
imagined a nation of more than 300 million people, nor techno
logical advancements such as cell phones and semi-automatic
weapons when they drafted the Bill of Rights.
The process of amending the Constitution is difficult, and has only
been successful 27 times. But if you had the chance, what changes
would you make? This S/DG will provide you an opportunity to
explore the possibilities, including those presented in the common
reading, which include campaign finance, the death penalty, and
gun control. Presentations can also address other possible changes.

(ERR) To Err Is Human?
To err is human, yet most of us go through life assuming (and
sometimes insisting) that we are right about nearly everything,
from the origins of the universe to how to load a dishwasher.
In Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margin of Error, journalist
Kathryn Schultz explores why we are so gratified in being right
and so maddened to be mistaken. Drawing on thinkers as varied
as Augustine, Freud, Greenspan and Groucho Marx, Schultz
demonstrates that error is both a given and a gift—one that can
transform our world views, our relationships and ourselves.

(EUR) La Belle Époque 1900-1914:
Fifteen Euphoric Years Of European History
It was a period characterized by optimism and peace in Europe
and The Second Industrial Revolution which gave rise to the Parisian bourgeoisie, the nouveau-riches who sought entertainment in
cabarets bistros and music halls. The Arts flourished. Impressionism
gained popularity. There were great technological and scientific
advancements. In Science there was the discovery of radioactivity,
and the germ theory of disease. It was an age influenced by and
characterized by developments in electricity, architecture, the image
of Woman, the decorative Arts, Great Exhibitions, the cult of speed
in communications and transportation—all enabled by this short
period of peace and stability. Class members should have no problem finding a fascinating topic for a presentation.
(FSS) Film Or Short Story: Which Is Better?
Two of Omnilore’s most popular kinds of classes are those dealing
with short stories and those discussing movies. In this S/DG, you’ll
have the best of both worlds! Did you know that some of our favorite films actually began life as a short story? This S/DG gives you
the opportunity to experience both and decide for yourself which
works better. You’ll read the original story and watch the film adaptation at home, then join in a discussion comparing and contrasting
the two. Are the story lines, settings and characters the same or are
they different? Did the transition from written
page to theatrical experience alter what you
felt? Did one turn out to be more effective
and/or more entertaining than the other, or
were both equally good in their own right?
Voice and share your opinions with others,
and plan to make it a lively discussion.

(INC) Wealth and Income Inequality
In America
Income inequality moved with astonishing speed from the boring
backwaters of economic studies to “the defining challenge of our
time.” Numerous recent articles have addressed the struggle of the
lower economic classes, the increases in wealth and income for
the “one per cent” and the financial hollowing out of the middle
classes. What are the real statistics and the real
reasons behind this spreading of the income
distribution? And is it wrong—or is it required
to foster hard work and entrepreneurs? This
class will look for the best data available and
explore implications of increasing inequality for
the future.
(MCR) Deadly Companions:
How Microbes Shaped Our History
We are surrounded by billions of bacteria. Bacteria can turn against
us when our resistance is diminished, causing diseases such as
diphtheria, whooping cough, and pneumonia. Those like cholera or
plague bacilli can spread rapidly among the adult population, leading to global epidemics and economic disasters.
Amazingly, bacteria were not identified and their effects recognized
until the 19th century. Since then, major improvements have occurred in environmental hygiene and the preparation of protective
antibacterial vaccines.

(NET) How The Internet Is Changing Our Lives
The Internet has been publicly available for only twenty years, yet
it is the catalyst of the widest and fastest technological revolution
in history. Its effects have touched practically every citizen in the
world. Its mass adoption has been swifter than that of any technology in history. It’s impossible today to imagine the world without
the Internet: it enables us to do things which only a few years ago
would have been unthinkable, and impinges on every sphere of
our lives.

(PHL) Brush Up On Your Philosophy
If you’re like most of us, Zeno, Socrates, Hume, Kant, Schopenhauer, and Nietzsche sound only vaguely familiar and we wish
we had the time, to acquire a basic familiarity with the history of
philosophy. A Passion for Wisdom is a lively, accessible, and highly
enjoyable tour of the world’s great ideas. Our text tells the story
of philosophy’s development with great clarity and refreshing wit.
We’ll explore all the major categories of philosophy, from metaphysics and ethics to politics and logic. We’ll talk about the intellectual tradition stretching back over three thousand years. Some
suggestions for research presentation: philosophers and their lives,
philosophies and their arguments, periods and regions, pertinence
to our lives today, etc. There will be ample opportunity to explore
some subjects (your favorite?) more deeply for group presentations
and discussions.

(PRK) America’s Best Idea: The National Parks
This S/DG will delve into the history of our National Parks, from the
creation of Yellowstone in 1872 to the present. Using Ken Burns’
6 part video series members will watch each episode at home and
one member will lead the discussion of the episode. Also, each
member will research and present on a relevant topic such as
more detailed information about the formation of the system or a
selection of a specific national park and talk about the history of
its region and its significance. This is not a class to show “family
vacation” pictures; it’s an intellectual pursuit of our National Parks
System.
(SHK) Shakespeare: All The World’s A Stage…
With players standing and with a few props, we propose to do
reading walk-throughs of Titus Andronicus, Henry IV Part 1, and
all-time favorite Hamlet. Class members will learn how to research
all perspectives of Shakespeare’s works — sources upon which the
Bard builds rich characters and enhances the plots, how to play
each character “in character,” themes, symbols, images, motifs,
and commentary on issues of the day. Members will leave this class
with a fuller understanding of the masterful story construction,
realistic characters with depth and humanity, and the rich, evocative language which have earned William Shakespeare the title of
greatest writer in the English language.

(USA) Men Who United The States
The U.S. was settled by a diverse population across a vast and varied landscape. What held it together and provided the foundation
for its growth? Follow in the footsteps of America’s most essential
and eccentric explorers, thinkers, and innovators, such as Lewis and
Clark and the leaders of the Great Surveys; the builders of the first
transcontinental telegraph and the powerful civil engineer behind
the Interstate Highway System to look at the links and threads
that pulled the country into a cohesive unity, then held it together.
Simon Winchester’s book covers and illuminates the background
of those who toiled fearlessly to discover, connect, and bond the
citizenry and geography of the U.S.A. from its beginnings. S/DG
presentations could cover a range of topics: specific individuals in
more detail; technologies that evolved to make it possible; economic winners/losers; natural resources gained/lost.
(WIN) Winston Churchill—His Life and Legacy
Soldier, parliamentarian, prime minister, orator, painter, writer,
husband, and leader—all of these facets combined to make Winston Churchill one of the most complex and fascinating personalities in history. An ambitious, world-traveling soldier and bestselling
author, Churchill was already famous upon entering Parliament in
1899 and within a decade was working with Lloyd George to pass
the great reforms of 1908–1911. Accounts prevail of Churchill’s
prescient denunciations of Hitler and heroics during the early days
of WWII. Some conclude that Churchill was a thoroughly likable
great man with many irritating flaws but no nasty ones: he lacked
malice, avoided grudges, vendettas and blame shifting, and quickly
replaced enmity with friendship. The assigned text will be supplemented by presentations on various aspects of his life so that we
may appreciate the interplay between the man and the period.

OLLI at CSUDH Invites
Sponsors and Contributors
If you want to get involved with the university, joining an OLLI committee is a wonderful way to make this happen. OLLI is a volunteer
organization that depends on the involvement of its membership to
function and grow. We are looking for individuals that would like
to lend their skills to the day-to-day administration of classes, and
to planning courses, activities, and publications.
CSUDH, through the Osher Lifelong
Learning Institute, provides collegelevel experiences and activities to
community residents 50+ years of
age who become members.
Individuals, businesses, and
organizations who wish to
support the goal of expanding
OLLI programs to meet the
intellectual and social needs of
older learners, please contact
Jim Bouchard at (310) 243-3729 or
[email protected] to discuss a
tax-deductible donation
or sponsorship.
Become a friend of OLLI!
Donate your time
and expertise.
OLLI is looking for volunteers!
Five OLLI committees currently exist, and they are…
1) Membership Committee – Assists in developing membership
recruitment activities, including the organization and promotion
of open houses. Committee members are responsible for greeting OLLI members at meetings and special events, and for calling
new members to welcome them to OLLI.
2) Marketing Committee – Assists the OLLI marketing coordinator
with developing a marketing plan, marketing pieces and choosing the appropriate media to market OLLI. Also provides input
into ways to promote OLLI to the community.
3) Curriculum Committee – Develops ideas for courses, lectures,
computer workshops, discussion groups, field trips and travel.
Identify instructors from CSUDH faculty, community experts, and
OLLI members. Develop class schedules for fall, summer and
winter semesters.
4) Publications Committee – Publishes the OLLI catalog each
semester and updates the OLLI website as needed.
5) OLLI Ambassador Committee – Assists with special events,
reminder phone calls, special mailings, survey reviews, member
recruitment, etc. Committee members will support OLLI instructors in class and represent OLLI at designated South Bay events.
Other skills are needed and everyone brings valuable knowledge
and experience to the organization. Look for calls for volunteers, or
call our OLLI office at (310) 243-3208 to say that you are interested
in becoming an OLLI volunteer.
