Kaskaskia College Receives
$196,342 Grant from
National Science Foundation
K
askaskia College is
proud to announce
that it has received a
$196,342 Grant from
the National Science
Foundation – Advanced Technological
Education Program.
Kaskaskia’s project will focus on
geospatial technology (GST), a growing area of study that provides the
skills needed for success in an ever
expanding array of occupations. With
the support of regional employers and
educators, the project will advance the
college’s efforts to establish geospatial technology certificate and associate degree programs to serve the
southern half of Illinois.
The project will prepare GST Technicians and GST-enabled graduates
for Southern Illinois Business and
Industry and will support the following key activities over a three-year
period: establish certificate and associate degree programs in GST while
utilizing, pilot-testing and evaluating
a nationally recognized curriculum;
provide GST field internship opportunities for Kaskaskia College students.;
incorporate GST into STEM (science,
technology, engineering and mathematics) Classes at Kaskaskia College
and regional high schools,; conduct
outreach events targeting students and
teachers as well as leaders of business, industries and communities to
share information about geospatial
technology including educational
opportunities and potential uses,; and
utilize a GST Regional Advisory
Board to help guide Kaskaskia’s GST
program, assist with the proposed project and enhance partnerships and
career pathways.
Geospatial Technology is used in
almost every industry, if there is any
kind of location involved GST is
being utilized. Included in the high
growth industries that are in need of
Geospatial Technicians every day are:
Utilities, Telecommunications, Local
Government, Defense and Intelligence, Emergency Services, Healthcare, Consumer Location-Based Services, Land and Property, Marine,
Transportation and Logistics, Financial and Insurance, Retail Chains and
Construction.
KC’s Business Services Representative, Art Borum says, “You may not
realize it, but you benefit from the use
of Geospatial Technology (GST)
every day. Whether it's a location on
your cell phone, the synchronization
of traffic lights on your way to work,
response of emergency services or the
convenient location of your favorite
restaurant, GST likely had a hand in
making these things happen. All over
the world, organizations are using
GST to manage the environment,
work more efficiently, provide better
customer service, and save money.”
For additional information about
Kaskaskia College’s Geospatial Technology (GST) Program, contact Art
Borum at (618) 545-3401.

Kaskaskia College enters into
Army ROTC agreement with SIU-E
K
askaskia College is
proud to announce
that it established
an agreement with
Southern Illinois
University at Edwardsville to offer the
Army ROTC (Reserve Officer’s Training Corp) Program for KC students.
The partnership will offer valuable
opportunities to local students for academic programming, leadership skills
and a military commission in the
Army.
According to KC President Dr. Jim
Underwood, “Kaskaskia has continu-
CMYK
ally been recognized as a military
friendly college and we feel that this
partnership is consistent with the College’s mission and sense of patriotism.”
The purpose of this agreement is to
make the Army ROTC Basic Course
available to qualified KC students.
Instruction in Military Science I and II
and 30 hours of leadership laboratory
will be provided by SIUE’s ROTC
cadre. The courses are designed to
develop leadership and self-confidence and will offer students the
opportunity for scholarships, leadership training and career opportunities
after graduation. Each course offers
classroom instruction, leadership labs
and physical fitness training.
Participation in the program will
not obligate students for future military services in the US Army. However, if a student decides to serve in the
Military, they will be provided opportunities for scholarships and other
compensation to further their education in their junior year.
For more information, please call
Carrie Hancock at Kaskaskia College
at (618) 545-3072 or the SIUE Army
ROTC Office at 650-2500. Students
can also visit www.siue.edu/ROTC.

KC’s Kicking Cancer Team
raises more than $100,000
for Relay for Life
T
his year’s Relay for
Life Event, with more
than $8,900 raised,
pushed the fundraising
by the Kaskaskia College Kicking Cancer team over the
$100,000 mark.
Relay for Life was begun by Dr.
Gordy Klatt, a Tacoma, Washington
colorectal surgeon, who circled a track
at the University of Puget Sound for
24 hours in 1985 and raised $27,000
for the American Cancer Society. In
1986, 19 teams took part in the first
team relay event and raised $33,000.
From there, Relay for Life has continued and has raised more than $4 billion to help fund cancer research.
The Kaskaskia College Kicking
Cancer team was co-founded in 2001
by several employees of the College’s
Business office and Bookstore. Carolyn Chappell was the founding Captain of the team, and her efforts on
behalf of the relay team were untiring
until she passed in 2005 after a long
struggle with breast cancer. Carolyn
was one of those rare people who
made you feel good simply by being
near her. She drew people in, and her
upbeat personality and distinctive
laugh made her one of the most
beloved people on campus. Losing
Carolyn gave a special emphasis to the
efforts of the Kicking Cancer Team
and drives team members on to this
day.
“Our team has adopted the breast
cancer awareness pink ribbon in all of
our fundraising efforts to honor Carolyn,” said current team co-captain
Misti Pawlisa. “The relay event is in
the summer, but our fundraising is
year-round, with bake sales, pizza
sales and basket raffles. We recycle
toner cartridges and have a Girls Night
Out event in which vendors sell merchandise with a portion going to the
relay. We do an annual purse and
accessories sale in March, an ongoing
book sale in the Library, and a rummage sale in April each year. Students
also get involved, with the Cosmetology club offering mini-services as part
of our Girls Night Out, and we have
pink ribbon events with our sports
teams where we sell T-shirts and collect donations. At the Relay event, we
have a silent auction that is a great
fundraiser for us.”
“I still look back on that first $100
we raised and can’t believe how far
our team has come,” Misti said. “I
look at some of our pictures and realize how great it has been to watch our
KC family grow. Those pictures also
make us realize how important it is for
us to continue our work. It seems each
year we have someone new touched by
cancer in our KC and personal families. The fight must go on.”
For more information on the
Kaskaskia College Kicking Cancer
Team and its fundraising efforts,
