Klie receives KC Faculty
Horizon Award
askaskia College is
proud to announce
that Professor
Stephanie Klie of
Hoyleton was recently named the recipient of the 2013
Horizon Faculty Award.
Klie is a rising star at KC and in her
first year has already made quite an
impression. She assisted the college in
a crucial way, going above and
beyond in teaching classes at the federal prison in Greenville in addition to
her full-time teaching load. She did so
in an incredibly positive manner, and
did an amazing job of instruction in
both arenas.
Her solid work ethic and caring attitude are true assets to this institution.
Klie’s friendly and caring personality
are a breath of fresh air, as her
demeanor and personality make for a
very pleasant and conducive learning
environment. She has an incredibly
bright future at KC and we are looking forward to watching her star shine
even brighter.

Find a gift to thrill Dad this Father’s Day
METRO EDITORIAL LIBRARY
W
ith Father’s Day
right around the
corner — this
Sunday — you can
go back to the old
standby tie and golf tees package or
you can step up to something that will
come in handy every time your dad (or
anyone else) fires up the grill.
Grilling experts have some suggestions for every type of grill master, so
take a look at these:
• The Neat Freak — For the dad
that likes to keep the grill spotless
before and after a meal, a heavy duty
grid brush is a must. Recommended is
one with a ‘grime guard.’ Broil King
says it will keep the grill clean as well
as your grill master. Pair it with a
biodegradable grill cleaner and let dad
worry about cooking, not cleaning.
• The Family Man — Trying to balance adult meals with kid-friendly
choices can be tricky, but burger presses and grill baskets make it easy to
accommodate everyone. Sliders are the
perfect size for little hands, and a basket that can grill at least six at a time
will help keep hungry mouths fed. A
stuffed burger press is perfect for creating unique flavor combinations for the
adults. Try Greek burgers stuffed with
feta cheese, roasted red pepper, and
spinach.
• The Enthusiast — If he insists on
being called Tex, Tiny, Tubby, or just
“dad” when he’s tending the barbecue
for hours on end, consider a pair of
heavy stainless steel pork claws. Broil
King’s experts claim they make shredding pork a walk in the park.
• The Entertainer — Items
designed for both cooking prep and
presentation are great gifts for an outdoor entertainer. A jalapeño pepper
rack adds grill appeal to this popular
appetizer and a pizza stone helps backyard chefs prepare and serve an
authentic pizza pie.
• The Dad Who Has It All —
explore the wide range of rubs, marinades and wood chips available to provide hours of flavor experimenting.
Additional gift grilling ideas are
available online at broilkingbbq.com.
Illinois Press Association
Spotlight Award
presented to Linda Berry
of KC’s Reading Link
L
inda Berry of Centralia was one of 10
recipients of the Illinois Press association’s Spotlight
Award. The award is given annually
to 10 tutors and 10 learners in a ceremony held in Springfield, Illinois.
Mrs. Berry is a volunteer tutor for
The Reading Link program at
Kaskaskia College. She began helping others learn to read in English
after her retirement from Wal-Mart
in 2008.
“I love books,” Mrs. Berry said.
“My house is filled with bookshelves, and I can’t imagine a life
without reading, especially for an
adult. So, I decided to do my part.”
Over the years, Mrs. Berry has
tutored a number of students, including one from China and one from
Vietnam.
As a Spotlight Award winner, Mrs.
Berry received a check in the amount
of $200 for “The Reading Link” program and a number of books, one of
which was autographed by Illinois
Secretary of State Jesse White, who
presented the award, and a plaque
commemorating the event.
“The Reading Link” is Kaskaskia
College’s Adult Literacy Program.
Services are provided at no cost to
the learner. For more information on
“The Reading Link” at Kaskaskia
College, please contact Pam Woelful

K
askaskia College is proud to
announce that
Angenien Huffstutler of
Hoyleton and Mimi Polczynski
of DuBois have received the
2013 Kaskaskia College Technology Award
Angenien Huffstutler displays
excellent support for improvements in the College’s technologies by sharing her expertise
and knowledge with other faculty. She supports her fellow faculty when they have questions
about utilizing technology in
their classroom by readily sharing resources she has created
along the way. Recently, one of
the faculty was struggling with
implementing Blackboard in her
classrooms and Angenien shared
her time, talents and experiences
with the faculty member as she
moved her classes to a hybrid
format. Angenien is always
accessible and very prompt in
communication, which is
incredibly important in today’s
fast-paced environment. She
does not know the meaning of
the word no and has always
been incredibly helpful in assisting in any tasks that have been
requested from her. Her positive
attitude sets a great example for
others and she is truly deserving
of this award.

Technology Department and

because of her leadership,
Kaskaskia College is privileged
to have state-of-the art radiographic equipment accessible
for student learning. She is continually keeping abreast of the
new technology and strategically budgeting so that the technology can be implemented in a
timely manner. Mimi also provides leadership in technology
in other ways as well. In the
classroom, she is always the
first to try out new things such
as smart board, iclickers and
softchalk. Also, she continuous-

ly updates and revises her classroom experience with webenhanced features. She experiments with new technologies
and provides exciting, interactive ways for her students to
learn. Her famous Jeopardy
game is loved by the students
and copied by many. This game
was even copied by the Illinois
State Society of Radiologic
Technology and is used every
year at the conference. Mimi,
thank you for inspiring us to
continually improve our teaching with technology.
