Primary Group Contact Information: Theodore Cisu (’18) – [email protected] Faculty Advisor, Department (contact info, email): Peter Holoch Assistant Professor, Division of Urology [email protected] Statement of Purpose (Description of Goals and Objectives of this SIG): The goal of the Urology Student Interest Group (USIG) is to expand medical student exposure to the field of urology, which is not a required rotation during clerkships and has an early match. Broadly speaking, urologists focus on the surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urogenital system. The USIG is committed to providing students with mentorship and shadowing opportunities in the medical school, summer research guidance, and information on the uniquely early match and residency application of urology programs. With subspecialties from pediatric urology and oncology to renal transplantation and female reconstructive surgery, urology has something for everyone. If you’ve never given urology much thought beyond male infertility, come to a meeting and check it out! Statement of Operations (Description of Planned Events/Outreach/Anticipated Funding): Sample titles of lunch talks: *Life of a Urologist *Humorous (and Anonymous) Stories from the Urologist *The Early Match: Ophthalmology and Urology (joint talk!) *Others: journal talk and/or procedure clinic a possibility. Movie/TV screenings: *Pilot episode of Showtime’s “Masters of Sex” – 1950s physiologists Masters and Johnson pioneer the field of human sexual response. Maybe joint with OB/GYN SIG. *Screen the film “Kinsey” – also related to human sexual response. Joint with OB/GYN SIG. Shadowing and Clinical/Basic *Database of residents and attending physicians in urology willing to have med students shadow. *Resource for surgical and urological research grants nationwide *Database of labs with clinical and research opportunities for medical students Membership Guidelines (what are the requirements to be considered a member of this Student Interest Group): Any member of the UVM College of Medicine community with an interest in, or desire to learn more about, the field of urology. No group or organization can deny consideration for membership to any student because of sex, race, religion, creed, national origin, handicap, sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status. The Office of Medical Student Education is not responsible for the recruitment of members or the development of group activities. The group is solely responsible for funding and expense issues. By signing this document, you agree to abide by the University of Vermont’s policies and the UVM COM SIG Policy and Procedures. Submitted By: Theo Cisu Date: 12/28/2014 Please email form to Stephanie Brooks ([email protected]) NEW STUDENT INTEREST GROUP APPLICATION Date of Application: 1/4/15 Name of Group: Readers and Talkies Officers, list all with their positions/responsibilities/class year: Susannah Kricker, President, MS1 Kishan Patel, Officer MS1 Primary Group Contact Information: Susannah Kricker [email protected] 845-764-1102 Faculty Advisor, Department (contact info, email): R. P Hudson, M.D., Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Surgery E-mail: [email protected] Phone: (802) 847-2434 Office Location: Surgery, MFU-McClure Wing, ER, Burlington, VT Statement of Purpose (Description of Goals and Objectives of this SIG): The purpose of this SIG is to create a space for medical students to engage with literature and film and to foster conversations and personal growth outside the realm of the medical profession. Once a month we will select a reading (book, short stories and/or poems) for the group and we will meet to discuss our thoughts related to the material and themes presented. We will also use other media, primarily film and podcasts, to explore ideas. The idea behind this SIG is to encourage critical thinking in fields other than medicine/science. It’s also supposed to be fun! As a long term goal, we would like to build connections between our group and students in other departments of UVM. Dr. Hudson has contacts in the classics and music departments of the undergraduate college and will help us to reach out to undergrad faculty and students in order to co-plan events or just meet as a larger group to share perspectives. We also would like to start a book swap in the student lounge. Statement of Operations (Description of Planned Events/Outreach/Anticipated Funding): Events will include monthly meetings to discuss the book/literature or movie. We will advertise on facebook and via posters in the student lounge. We will use each meeting to select the book/movie for the next month. We hope to hold the meetings in the evenings and at homes of SIG members. This way we can have relaxed meetings that are less likely to overlap with the meeting times of other SIGs. Our funding will be directed towards resources such as books (if we are unable to reserve enough copies at the library), purchasing rights to films, and hosting events such as poetry or book readings. Membership Guidelines (what are the requirements to be considered a member of this Student Interest Group): Members should make an effort to attend gatherings and engage with the materials. We would like to see consistent participation but are also welcome to people who may just want to join us for a single meeting. We also expect members to bring suggestions for readings and films.
