Role of BISCAST as Partner Training Institution Project Description City of Naga identified BISCAST as partner for PROJECT MANAGEMENT in the implementation of practical NEXUS initiatives, i.e., the ENERGY EFFICIENT LCH Specific Project: Del Rosario Housing Project Objective: Improve housing design based on NEXUS project recommendations Project Description Strategy: Implementation of Nexus Approach in the re-designing of low-cost housing system cum training/apprenticeship of architecture students of BISCAST (…applied to the “Naga City Housing Project” in Del Rosario.) CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES FACTORS CULTURAL ORIENTATION WEATHER & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS CLASS VS. TRAINING SCHEDULES PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES (Minor) Language barrier. Difficulty in expressing points/ideas in the English Language. (Minor) Punctuality. Difficulty in reporting on-time during trainings. (Minor) Gender. Difficulty for female trainees to do physical tasks in the construction. Hot Temperature/High Humidity Time Management. Difficulty in balancing the academic requirements in school and the requirements of the training. Building Standards. Contradiction of known standards and what was implemented by Habitat etc. OPPORTUNITIES Acquired new knowledge in energy efficient, low-cost housing design using Nexus Approach. Actual building construction. International Building Standard. Cost estimation and computation. 6. OUTPUT AND OUTCOMES • • • • Improved housing design based on outputs of the training using the NEXUS approach and the technical assistance of the faculty. – Revised Design and Plans/Drawings – Plans and calculations have been made available to the official sites of the city – Plans assessed by the responsible authorities to be technically correct – Calculations are used in pricing for future housing projects of the city government – The improvements will be implemented in the preparation of the remaining 36 units at the Del Rosario Housing Technical Manual on EE-LCH – For finalization Implementation – Additional on going construction of three(3) Quadruplex units – Implemented the recommendations (e.g. tie beam, Revised Finish floor line of 0.30 m and ceiling height of 2.40 (fin floor line to top of beam) – Reinforced steel bar for roof beam has been installed in some units but not yet ready for concrete pouring. – At least 35-40% completion for each unit of the three quadruplex has been constructed. Linkage – BISCAST as a training-partner institution in the promotion of NEXUS approach 7. RECOMMENDATIONS Training: Promote activities that will express student’s ideas freely. Project Implementation: There should be monitoring system from project development, completion until occupancy. Linkage: BISCAST be considered a member of the City NEXUS Task force. 8.
