MANAGEMENT IN ASIAN CITIES : THE URBAN NEXUS

THE OVERVIEW OF PROGRESS
 Pekanbaru city was introduced to the NEXUS Program at
May 7th 2014 when BAPPENAS Brought The NEXUS
Team/GIZ in FGD meeting and site visit in Pekanbaru City.
 Pekanbaru have been invited to attend the 3rd Regional
workshop In Danang/Vietnam 25 - 27 June 2014 was asked
to propose the project that in line with the nexus program.
 The project that Pekanbaru proposed to the nexus is
Kampung Bandar Water Supply, Communal Waste Water
Collection and Communal Septic Tank Project.
 In Danang, there was in depth Discussion regarding Vacuum
Sewerage System as a substitution for Communal Waste
Water Collection and Septic Tank
THE OVERVIEW OF PROGRESS
 At August 6th 2014 NEXUS Team/GIZ,ICLEI
Team/GIZ ICLEI and a Vaccum
System expert came to Pekanbaru to meet some agency in
a FGD meeting talked about Vacuum Sewerage System and
Solid Waste Management.
 There was an initiative to accelerate the Project and had
been discussed in various meeting (internal and external).
 However, it was left in limbo due to divided opinion among
the members especially on Vacuum Sewerage System and
whether the project should involve the central government
or not regarding the signing of the MOU.
 September 26th 2014 there was an invitation to Chiangmai
in Thailand to visit a perfectly organized sanitary landfill.
The site visit implemented at 27 – 30 October 2014. It
revive The nexus program in Pekanbaru
The New Propose Project
 New Theme/Topic “Waste to Energy”
 Solid Waste Management, for A PERFECTLY
ORGANIZED SANITARY LANDFILL: recycling the
leachate, the residues, capturing the methane gas
producing heat and energy for electricity production
 There will be a New Sanitary Landfill and for the Old
one still can be used in capturing

producing the electricity.
Expected Benefits
 Researching, designing and to devise
infrastructure design & cost estimation not only
for The new Sanitary Landfill but also the old
one.
 The Nexus Project will save The Local Budget
in preparing (study, Design etc) Approximately
arround IDR 1.000.000.000 (USD 84,000)
 This Project also unite at least 4 agency to
work together for their importance/interest
 Transfer Knowledge & Technology
 Investment Opportunity for The Private or PPP
 Networking Activities

 The Understanding Among The Members  Consistency  Communication (coordination and consultation)
 Project Financing Plan KEY OPPORTUNITIES
Due to Multisectoral Approach, it makes the various Agency
not only in Local Governement but also central government
work together hand in hand , consistence in planning
Documents and full coordination towards one goals; “Food
Security, Water Protection, Renewable Energies”
