EDS377H5/UTM377H5-WhyFirst-YearUniversityMatters:ExploringtheImpactofPeerMentoring(HUM,EXP)
Thiscourseexplorescontemporaryissuesinhighereducationwithafocusonexperiences,issuesandchallengescommonly
encountered by undergraduate students during their first year of university. Interdisciplinary in its focus, topics of
explorationincludeanexaminationofstudentdevelopmenttheories,modelsofstudentengagementandaninvestigation
into mindset, levels of persistence, habits of mind, and personality characteristics that impact student success. An
internshipcomponentisrequired.Studentstakingthecoursewillassumeapeer-mentoringroletoapplyandcontextualize
theoriesandskillslearnedinthecourse.Thisisaclosedcourseopenonlytothosestudentswhohavesuccessfullysecured
apeer-mentoringpositionwiththeFirst-YearPeerMentoringprogram.

Responsibilities

! CoordinateandfacilitatetheLAUNCHSeminarSeries,12weeklysessionsfocusedonacademicandsocial
transition;
! Organizeandleadco-curricularactivities.Thesewillconsistofacademicandcommunityengagement
opportunitiesbasedaroundexistingprogramsofferedbyUTMServicesandDepartmentsandalignedwiththe
UofTCo-CurricularRecordwiththegoalofconnectingstudentswithotherswhohavesimilarinterests;
! Createasupportivepeernetworktohelpstudentsmeetotherswithsimilarinterests,findstudypartners,and
engagewithsuccessfulupperyearstudents.
B.MENTORSHIP&ADVISING
! Maintainflexibleavailabilityinordertoholdone-on-onemeetingswithstudents;
! Advisestudentstothebestofyourabilityandmakereferralswhereappropriate.
C.COMMUNICATION&ADMINISTRATION
