Contents
1 - Introduction to UNEP
2 - Overview of UNEP NAMAs-related
activities
3 - UNEP Looking Ahead
Part 1 – Introduction to UNEP
UNEP is represented across the world six regional offices, all of which work
across seven thematic priority areas :
Climate Change
Resource Efficiency
Disaster and Conflicts
Environmental Governance
The Energy Branch leads
the mitigation component
of the CC sub-programme :
through activities enabling
the reduction of energy and
transport related GHG
emissions.
Harmful Substances and Hazardous Waste
Ecosystem Management
Environment under Review
NAMAs: APPROACH and FRAMEWORK
Measures -- specific
policies, regulations or
technology initiatives
Specific actions -project or
technological action in
a specified location;
Others that do not
belong to any of the
first three categories.

Potential Sectors
Buildings
TOOLS
Focus areas -- generic
sub-sectoral, sectoral
or cross-sectoral
mitigation options with
no specific goals or
measures to
implement them;

Overview of
UNEP NAMAs-related activities
NAMAs precursors/enablers
•Technology Needs Assessments
•Green Climate Fund Readiness Programme
•Tools and mechanisms supporting development of NAMAs

Technology Needs Assessments
With UNEP support, under the global
UNEP-GEF TNA project:
•
36 countries being supported in
prioritizing climate technology
needs and actions under TNAs
•
Amongst those, 20 countries have
completed Technology Needs
Assessment (TNAs) reports.
•
In Costa Rica, the technology
action plan will be used to design
and structure their Nationally
Appropriate Mitigation Actions
(NAMAs) in transport and energy
and support the country's National
Climate Change Strategy.

Possible sources of NAMAs financing
Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness Programme
Being set up by UNEP, in collaboration with the UNDP and WRI, to prepare developing
countries to effectively and efficiently plan for, access, manage, deploy and monitor GCF
financing once it is fully operational, both institutionally and in terms of private-sector
engagement.
Help develop national project
pipelines on the basis of national
climate change strategies, plans and
policies, including through the
active involvement of the private
sector
Offer needs-oriented capacity
building support in order to enable
countries to directly or indirectly
access the GCF, also taking into
account access requirements
defined within other funds and
facilities such as the Adaptation
Fund and GEF
In its target
countries, the
Programme will
Assist in setting up in-country
monitoring tracking systems for
climate finance and its effectiveness
Disseminate lessons learned in the
course of the implementation back
to the GCF Board in order to support
its work in designing the GCF
operations
This project is part of the International Climate Initiative and funded by
Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

Climate Technology Centre and
Network (CTCN)
• About : The Climate Technology Centre and Network
(CTCN) is the operational arm of the UNFCCC Technology
Mechanism and it is hosted and managed by UNEP in
collaboration with UNIDO and with the support of 11
centres of Excellence located in developing and developed
countries. The CTCN is located in Copenhagen, Denmark.
• Work: The CTCN will work to reduce the risks and costs of
technology transfer by helping developing countries make
informed decisions about mitigation and adaptation
technologies that suit their needs. It will promote
accelerated, diversified and scaled-up transfer of
environmentally sound technologies (EST) for climate
change mitigation and adaptation, consistent with the
national socio-economic and sustainable development
priorities of the requesting countries.

NAMA Development for the Building Sector
Why NAMA for Buildings?
• Large percentage of global GHG
emissions is from the building
sector- the single largest
contributor of emissions
• By 2030, 80% of the world’s
population will be living in cities
and 40% (3 billion people) will
need access to housing
• Significant Opportunities for Cobenefits and Market
Transformation
Building Sector
Facts and Figures
 Represents 10% of global GDPhigher in some rapidly developing
countries
 Employs more than 111 million
people, including within its supply
chain
 Sector annual expenditures
(currently more than $7 trillion, and
$12 trillion by 2020)
 Nearly $100 trillion will be spent in
construction sector over the next 10
year
Growth regions: Asia, Africa, Middle East, and Latin America
UNEP - NAMA Development for the Building Sector in Asia
International Climate
Initiative- NAMA
Development for the
Building Sector
UNEP developed a five
year project, funded by
Germany, to facilitate
building sector mitigation
actions in Asia, assisting
Indonesia, The Philippines,
Thailand and Viet Nam,
and to develop a sectorspecific MRV methodology
based on UNEP-SBCI’s
Common Carbon Metric.
