Pointer file (filename.mxd)
– Keeps track of:
ƒ Files for layers in ArcMap table of contents
ƒ How each data layer is displayed, legends
ƒ one layout (per mxd file)
„
Does not save actual data!
– You need to save mxd file and data in lab folder!!!
ArcMap
File > Save As …
filename.mxd

„
Missing layers…deleted, moved, renamed
Red exclamation point ! next to data layer in ArcMap TOC
Fix procedure #1:
– In ArcMap, right-click on “broken” layer > Properties
– Select the Source tab
– Click on the Set Data Source …button and find layer
– Click OK

Sharing GIS Data
(Fix #2 Best)

Pathnames
– Absolute or full pathnames
ƒ e.g. C:Temp\morrissey\data\usa\counties.shp
ƒ requires everyone to have same file structure
on their computers (bad assumption)
– Relative pathnames
ƒ e.g. \usa\counties.shp
ƒ easier to move data between computers
ƒ opt for relative pathnames when sharing
– e.g. between lab PC and Zoo!
Changing Absolute or Relative
Pathnames
1.
2.
3.
4.
In ArcMap, File > Map Properties
Click on the Data Source Options …button
Click on the radio button to set Store Full Path
Names or Store Relative Path Names
Click OK

End of Lab
„
Show TA final analyses for credit or upload snagged
image to WebCT
„
Have TA show you how to:
– save your lab folder to Zoo and reopen Zoo .mxd file
to make sure all is well (i.e. data is not lost or
corrupted)
– Reset data source for missing data
– Set relative path names
