GRADUATE ASSISTANT (GA) LEAVE OF ABSENCE GRADUATE COLLEGE
GRADUATE COLLEGE GRADUATE ASSISTANT (GA) LEAVE OF ABSENCE READ THE INFORMATION BELOW BEFORE COMPLETING FORM The University's primary relationship to its Graduate Assistants, Graduate Research Assistants and Graduate Teaching Assistants is as students. Occasionally, circumstances arise whereby a Graduate Assistant under contract is unable to complete her or his assignment. In such instances, the Graduate College has a process in place to handle the situation fairly and equitably. The guiding Graduate College practices in this situation are as follow: • The GA's stipend may be kept if an appropriate assignment is still "doable" • The GA's stipend may be eliminated at the request of the department if the • GA's assignment cannot be fulfilled adequately; in this situation, the stipend will be pro‐rated. • If the GA has already opted into and paid for their student health insurance during that semester, it will continue uninterrupted. • If the GA is registered for and matriculated in classes, their tuition stipend will continue until the end of the semester. • GAs, as with any UNLV student, may always avail themselves of the rights and responsibilities of the UNLV Medical Leave withdrawal policy. To initiate this process, students must submit a Graduate College GA Leave of Absence form with all required signatures; relevant supporting documentation may be attached. Graduate Assistants requiring assistance with this process should contact Eric Lee at (702) 895‐3970 or [email protected] or Fred Krauss at (702) 895‐5773 or [email protected] in the Graduate College before, during, or after completing the forms. RETURNING FROM A LEAVE OF ABSENCE Upon return from leave the student will resume his/her academic program based on the requirements outlined in the Graduate Catalog indicated on the form. Prior to an approved Leave of Absence, the student and department must discuss which Graduate Catalog the student will have to follow, and fill out the LOA form indicating the year. There are four options for Graduate Catalog year: the year when the graduate student was first admitted to her/his program; a subsequent year; the semester/year when she/he returns from Leave; or the semester/year of graduation. The student should also contact his/her department for advice on which courses to register for upon return from leave. Note that a student returning from an LOA must (re)apply if he/she wants to compete for a graduate assistantship. Students who return as scheduled do not need to do anything. If a student returns earlier than scheduled, he/she must contact the Graduate College to have registration privileges reactivated. Students who do not return as scheduled from leave will be separated from their graduate program. Please note, students are NOT guaranteed a graduate assistantship upon return from a leave of absence. GRADUATE COLLEGE 19 GA LEAVE OF ABSENCE FORM Please type or print clearly in blue or black ink.
