VMware vFabric Application Performance Manager
DATA S H E E T VMware vFabric Application Performance Manager Comprehensive Performance Management for Applications Deployed on Virtual or Cloud Infrastructure AT A G L A N C E From the leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, VMware vFabric™ Application Performance Manager™ defines the new standard for monitoring and management tools for owners of applications deployed on virtualized or cloud infrastructure. Working seamlessly with your VMware powered cloud and automatically incorporating applications deployed with VMware vFabric Application Director™, Application Performance Manager is easy to set up, works across any cloud, and simplifies the identification and remediation of performance problems down to the code level. K e y B E N E F I TS •A “single pane of glass” console streamlines management of dynamic cloud applications. •The software is simple to set up, use and extend across any application and any cloud in minutes. •Application Performance Manager speeds rootcause identification by triangulating problems across servers, transaction paths and code changes. •Policy-based alerting and remediation ensure that problems are fixed quickly. •Native integration with VMware infrastructure, including vFabric Application Director, provides comprehensive information and powerful automation. What Is VMware vFabric Application Performance Manager? Application Performance Manager is a new breed of application monitoring and management solution that delivers on the promise of managing applications independently of the underlying infrastructure. While IT organizations use VMware vCenter™ tools to manage the infrastructure-utilization aspects of performance, Application Performance Manager focuses on the application itself. This enables application owners to look at transaction performance and determine how infrastructure resources and code changes affect overall application health. Simple to set up, use and extend, Application Performance Manager is driven by VMware vFabric AppInsight™, which provides a next-generation application-operations dashboard. With AppInsight, application owners can view true performance by monitoring transaction paths from a user perspective. Integrated within the AppInsight dashboard, additional details— such as correlated metrics on resource performance from VMware vFabric Hyperic® and byte-code instrumentation— make it easy to identify root causes and take action at the code level to fix problems quickly. How Is vFabric Application Performance Manager Used? Application Performance Manager is an enabling technology that empowers DevOps to manage cloud-based applications without worrying about the underlying infrastructure. Untangled from day-to-day application operations, IT is able to focus on building out a private cloud that is cost-competitive with public clouds, provides end-user services that keep applications in-house, and can support a larger server-to-administrator ratio. DevOps teams, presented with readily available infrastructure and armed with sophisticated application management tools, have full control of application life cycles, including developing, running and managing their applications. Designed to simplify and streamline many of the tasks required to keep applications under management, Application Performance Manager is embedded in the VMware vCloud® infrastructure. It automatically models transactions across all application tiers and discovers application resources. With real-time visibility into transaction performance and details on resource and code performance, it gives application owners and IT a common perspective that enables them to work together to identify and solve potential performance problems early. In the new cloud operating model, DevOps builds, deploys and manages applications independently of the underlying infrastructure and the CloudOps teams supporting it. P R O D U C T D ATA S H E E T / 1 VMware vFabric Application Performance Manager Application owners choose Application Performance Manager because it • Is simple to use – Extensive automation and an intuitive user interface simplify application performance management at any scale. • Streamlines application support processes – With common perspective and granular detail, application build, release and monitoring teams can collaborate and maintain application performance more effectively. • Supports any application on any cloud – The ability to track live changes across any application on any cloud gives application owners the insight they need to manage complex applications across private, public or hybrid clouds. • Closed-loop application lifecycle – Because the product is integrated with vFabric Application Director, teams can immediately incorporate applications into management policies during application provisioning to further automate the build-run-manage application lifecycle. • Native support for VMware cloud infrastructure – Integration with VMware vSphere® and supporting products such as VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite™ and vCenter Orchestrator™ enables organizations to extend workflows and remediation—such as rollback and capacity expansion—to the virtual infrastructure for end-to-end cloud management. Key Features Support for Any Application, Any Cloud Designed specifically for the cloud, with specialized support for scaling up and down, Application Performance Manager makes organizations confident they can manage application health and cost no matter where their applications live. Simplicity Intelligent automation and an easy-to-use interface dramatically streamline the management of applications running in the cloud. • Cloud-aware – Designed for virtualized and hybrid environments, application monitoring keeps track of starting, stopping and moving virtual machines seamlessly. • Easy setup and management – Autodiscovery provides a continuously updated inventory of all application resources and transaction paths in order to keep pace with the fast-changing topology of modern cloud-based applications. • Code- and cloud-agnostic – A model-driven architecture eliminates dependencies on application languages or target clouds, opening up the possibilities for how and where to best run your applications. • Intelligent user interface – Powerful visualizations of overall application health—with detailed graphical and tabular views of health trends, throughput and errors—help identify performance slowdowns quickly before they cause outages. • Extensible framework – An open, standards-based framework helps application teams place new or emerging software and infrastructure resources under management quickly, with little effort. • Baseline performance trends – Intelligent metric data analysis automatically determines normal behavior for performance metrics, such as transaction times, throughput and latency. This creates a baseline of performance and an overall health score that can be used for alerting policies if performance begins to degrade. Embedded Performance Management Application Performance Manager is integrated as an end-user service, providing application teams with a comprehensive, real-time, application-centric view of their application performance. Teams obtain detailed insight into the health and efficiency of application components deployed across hybrid cloud environments.
