GRADUATE & PROFESSIONAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION (GPSA) COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES Monday, March 4, 2013, 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. - Student Union Room 208 B & C I. Call to Order President Michael Gordon called the meeting to order at 2:01 p.m. II. Public Comment No public comment IV. Approval of Minutes President Michael Gordon called for a motion to approve the February minutes. Rebecca Bolen (History) and David Snyder (Political Science) seconded. Gordon asked for any corrections or additions and hearing none, he called for a vote, which was unanimous to approve. V. Speaker Robert Correales, UNLV Ombudsman Correales is a Professor of Law and has been at UNLV for 14 years. He discussed his role as an Ombudsman which as a neutral advisor/problem solver. He has been at this position since January 1, 2013. This position is unattached to other departments and addresses campus concerns—proving an unbiased analysis as mediator and negotiator. Robert Correales addresses regulatory issues, can deal with bullying, and discuss things related to the University. Jason Vaughn and the Library Digitization Program update The library program has digitized 30,000 pages of the Rebel Yell from the mid-1950s to 2010. They have started phase one of the process and are preparing for online delivery. The digitization program received funding from GPSA, CSUN, and the library services and technology for this project. Once the project is online, students will be able to conduct an online search for: names, dates, photos, and the full text of Rebel Yell articles. They are close to finishing the project, are working on a comprehensive software update, and are finalizing the public interface design. The anticipated launch of the digitized Rebel Yell is this summer. VI. Budget Report Treasurer Reed reported the February monthly expenditures. She directed the council’s attention to the top of the report, the monthly student wages are listed at $2,819.00 for the staffing in the Graduate Student Commons. She continued to report the operating expenses for the month of February: the monthly postage and telephone costs; on the books and periodical line $108.00 reflects the New York Times subscription for the month and $1252.04 is to Barnes and Noble for the GPSA Spring Book Scholarships; in-state travel expense is for GPSA President Michael Gordon's airline ticket purchased for his trip to Carson City for the Feb. 25th Nevada Education Awareness Day. Treasurer continued the report by detailing the hosting expenses for February: $387.04 was spent for the replenishment of the snacks and water sold in the GPSA study; $196.15 was incurred for the bagels and coffee offered in the Graduate Student Commons during the first week of instruction for the Spring semester. She concluded by reviewing the $527.26 that was brought in from the sales in the Graduate Student Commons; bring the year-to-date revenue in at $258,730.22. The balance forward is $157,840.87 with a balance of $172,555.84 President Gordon asked for a motion to approve the budget Kathryn Baustian (Anthropology) motioned to approve the budget report; Ryan La Pier (Accounting) seconded. After a call for the vote, Council unanimously approved the budget report as presented. VII. Committee Reports Board of Regents – Michael Gordon, President, discussed the Board of Regents meeting at DRI. The 30 foot easement of the Greenspun Building has been approved for the transit system to go in. They’ll have showers, and places to store your bicycle. Special meetings for the Board of Regents are April 19, May 7th and May 24th. NSHE bought a building across the street from UNLV. There is continual discussion of e-learning for the state of Nevada. GPSA Activities / Community Service – Rebecca Bolen, activities chair, discussed the need for volunteers at the food pantry. They are working on planning the end of semester social. Invited departments to forward information about any special events to their colleagues. GPSA Awards – will be announced at the GPSA Research Forum, March 16, 2013. GPSA E-Board Elections – April 1st-April 5th GPSA Government Relations – Jennifer Reed, Treasurer, discussed the Feb 25th Nevada Education Day in Carson City. NSA was also at Carson City. Students advocated for: supporting the restoration of staff and faculty pay, supporting the change in the funding formula, and supporting the funding of the Knowledge Fund. GPSA Publications – Jennifer Liese, Secretary, mentioned the upcoming final newsletter to be printed April 12th. And asked the publications committee to stay behind after the meeting to set up the next publications committee meeting. Mentioned if anyone has ideas for stories they’d like included in the next newsletter, please email her. GPSA Research Forum – Sharon Young, VP, next Saturday March 16th. Volunteers are meeting Friday at 3pm for set up. They still need volunteers for set-up the day before and the day of the Research Forum. March 11th is the day for presenters to have their posters turned into the Graduate Student Commons. GPSA Sponsorships – Sharon Young, VP, Committee meeting today. Summer applications due March 15th. Fall applications due April 15th. Campus-wide –25 students were at the recent workshop for applying for academic jobs, and had helpful feedback for future workshops. Kinesiology (Sarah Horsch) mentioned her department is working on research with children with cerebral palsy, and if anyone knows of anyone with children they’re offering a week of treatment/therapy. This Wednesday is brown bag with Kyle Kaalberg, College of Education his topic is the use of information technology in the classroom. VIII. Old Business – none IX. New Business – none X.
