ThiscoursewillgiveconsiderationtothefourcanonicalgospelsintheNewTestament.Itwillpayclose attentiontoissuesofgenre,narrativedynamics,theologicaldevelopment,JewishandRoman backgrounds,andhistorical-criticalmatters.Duringthiscourse,wewilldeveloparesponsiblereading strategythatinteractswiththefourgospelsandwiththeculturesinwhichtheyfindthemselves. LeaningObjectives: • StrengthenyourfaithinJesus.Oneofmyprimaryobjectivesisthatyouleavewithapassionfor thebiblicalJesusthatcaninformyourministry. • Providetoolstoseethegospelsnotasdryhistorybutasengaginghistorical-literaturesothat thisengagementwillfinditselfinthepulpitandtheheartsofGod’speople. • Understandcriticalchallengestothegospelsandthepresuppositionsthatinformthose challenges. • Demonstrateengagementwiththegospelsinaconstructivewaythatdealsseriouslywiththe textsbutalwayshasaneyeonthepresent. • UnderstandthegospelsintheirJewishandRomancontexts.Thesetwosocio-historicalworlds informthegospelwriters,therefore,wemustseethemcouchedwithinthosecontextsinorder toexperiencetheworld-changingimpacttheyhadonthe1stCentury.
