Brian Edward Galante Can you coax your mind from its wandering and keep to the original oneness? Can you let your body become supple as a newborn child’s? Can you cleanse your inner vision until you see nothing but the light? Can you love and lead without imposing your will? Can you deal with the most vital matters, by letting events take their course? Can you step back from your own mind and thus understand all things? Giving birth and nourishing, having without possessing, acting with no expectations, leading and not trying to control: this is the supreme virtue. th

David Conte (b. 1955) I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I feel my fate in what I cannot fear. I learn by going where I have to go. We think by feeling. What is there to know? I hear my being dance from ear to ear. I wake to sleep and take my waking slow. Great Nature has another thing to do To you and me; so take the lively air, And, lovely, learn by going where to go. Of those so close beside me, which are you? God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there, And learn by going where I have to go. This shaking keeps me steady. I should know. What falls away is always. And is near. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I learn by going where I have to go. (Theodore Roethke, 1908-‐1963) Light takes the Tree, but who can tell us how? The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair; I wake to sleep and take my waking slow. Gloria (from Mass in G Major, BWV 236) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Faustino Solis (b. 1992) Go, lovely rose, Small is the worth Tell her that wastes her time and me, Of beauty from the light retired; That now she knows, Bid her come forth, When I resemble her to thee, Suffer herself to be desired, From the door’s soft opening And the day’s first sigh, Filling the room, I see before me A life of doors, One opening on another: Doors upon doors, And sighs upon sighs, Paruparong bukid na lilipad-‐lipad Sa gita ng daan papagapagaspas Isang bara ang tapis Isang dangkal ang manggas Ang sayang de kola Isang pyesa ang sayad May payneta pa siya -‐ uy! May suklay pa man din -‐ uy! Nagwas de-‐ohetes ang palalabasin Haharap sa altar at mananalamin At saka lalakad nang pakendeng-‐kendeng. How sweet and fair she seems to be. Tell her that’s young, And shuns to have her graces spied, That hadst thou sprung In deserts where no men abide, Thou must have uncommended died. Rising in a tide of mornings, Rising, until that final sigh, And the last morning, And the last holy breath, Whispering “this…” (Robert Bode) Field butterfly, flying around in the middle of the road, flapping its wings Wearing a nine meter-‐long apron over her back skirt A hand span tall is the butterfly sleeves Her skirt shaped like a grand piano Has a train with the length of the entire rack of cloth She even has an ornamental double comb -‐ wow! And even a decorative comb -‐ wow! She shows her petticoat embroidered with eyelet She faces the church’s altar and looks at her beauty in the mirrors Then she struts swaying her hips. And not blush so to be admired. Then die, that she The common fate of all things rare May read in thee How small a part of time they share That are so wondrous sweet and fair! Alma Mater, we cherish you, and in days that are yet to be, Our voices let us ever raise in honor, UNLV. (Lyrics by V. Svarda, adapted by R. Lemon, T. Leslie and T. LaBounty) University Choral Ensembles
The UNLV CHORAL ENSEMBLES enjoy a reputation for excellent performances throughout the southwest and beyond. The choirs recently were praised for a concert described as “…glorious, yet disciplined. The choruses performed with unaffected charisma.” Under the direction of David B. Weiller and Jocelyn K. Jensen, the choirs (University Concert Singers, Chamber Chorale, Varsity Men’s Glee Club and Women’s Chorus) present several concerts annually on the university campus and in the greater Las Vegas community. Tours have encompassed Nevada, California, Arizona, Utah and Colorado, as well as itineraries in Hawaii, New York, Mexico and Canada. Notable highlights include appearances with the world renowned Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra and a massed choir performance in New York City’s Carnegie Hall. The UNLV Chamber Chorale has been honored with invited performances for regional conferences of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). University choirs have presented major works with the Mexico National Symphony in Mexico City, the Las Vegas Philharmonic, the University Symphony Orchestra, and the Nevada Symphony Orchestra. The choirs have appeared in numerous fully staged productions in collaboration with UNLV Opera Theater, and, on a lighter note, they have presented many concerts of classic musical theater repertoire. The UNLV Choral Ensembles maintain an active student chapter of the ACDA that supports choral music and special student projects on campus. The choirs also sponsor Lamprophony, a student-‐organized contemporary a cappella ensemble that performs on campus and in the community. The choirs are supported by an outstanding faculty of artist-‐scholars in the Department of Music that includes voice professors Alfonse Anderson, Tod Fitzpatrick, Linda Lister, Stephanie Weiss, and pianist-‐coach Kosta Popovic. The Department of Music offers a full complement of B.A., B.M., M.M. and D.M.A. degrees. Concert Singers & Chamber Chorale
