EASY TO READ: Clear type and looks professional Use italics, bullets, underlines and boldface to assist reader One inch margins (top, bottom, left & right) Plenty of white space and consistent use of line spacing Use good quality, professional resume paper (ivory is the best) Use 10-12point font size Popular fonts: Arial, Times New Roman, Helvetica NO MISTAKES: Proofread! Edit! Proofread! DO NOT RELY ON SPELL CHECK! No grammar or punctuation errors Tip: Read your resume backwards to check for errors CONCISE AND RELEVANT: One or two page maximum Stress your accomplishments No pictures, personal or political information Targeted information for a particular job Do not include references on resume (that should be on a separate page) Lastly, Be honest and accurate! USE ACTION VERBS: To describe your relevant skills and experience Quantify your accomplishments using numbers/percentages/dollar amounts Be explicit and “punchy” in describing your accomplishments HAVE AN OBJECTIVE: (optional) Don’t leave the employer guessing what position you are seeking Use a brief summary statement that embraces your overall qualifications SALARY: Don’t put salary information in your resume or cover letter (unless it is requested…that information may be used to screen you out!)
