December 17, 2015
To the Search Committee,
Dean of the College of Design, Construction and Planning at the University of Florida
Dear Search Committee,
I am very pleased to submit my application for the position of Dean of the College of Design, Construction
and Planning at the University of Florida. I am a creative and optimistic administrator who gained
appreciation and respect with effective leadership skills and a wide perspective on the numerous and
diverse components of a public research University. Important to me is the identification and implementation
of a transformative vision with broader strategic objectives, efficient organizational models, and inspiring and
motivating milieus. The opportunity to be an engaging, energetic contributor to the future leadership of the
College of Design, Construction and Planning is very compelling. I am excited by the possibility to be an
effective voice and visible advocate within the University of Florida and its exceptional research community.
With this letter of interest I am enclosing my curriculum vitae and a bio-narrative.
In my current position as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs at the College of Architecture, Texas Tech
University (TTU), I provide direction combined with new initiatives and aims through interaction with faculty,
students, staff, and University and College administrators. My decision-making and dealings are inclusive
and thoughtful, valuing entrepreneurship, collaboration and performance. I deal with challenges on a daily
basis, which I approach with an open mind and well-organized solutions at many levels. It is vital for me to
be an effective communicator to ensure the successful attainment of University goals, and create a trusting,
transparent and constructive working environment. I focus on people and I pay attention to the details. I am
dedicated in promoting academic quality and faculty reputation, mentoring and helping faculty to establish
standards of excellence.
The position of Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in the College of Architecture was newly created
three years ago in alignment with the University aspirations. After serving as Chair of Instruction from 2010
to 2012, I accepted this role with enthusiasm and with the desire to bring a fresh perspective for the future
growth of our College. Texas Tech received National Research University status in 2012 and continues its
path towards the evolution as a Tier One institution and a member of the Association of American
Universities (AAU). As described in the TTU 2010-2020 Strategic Plan, a Tier One University is
characterized by a set of criteria, which includes a distinguished faculty with a high profile in scholarship and
creative activities, exceptional student body and excellent graduate programs. The University Strategic Plan
places great emphasis on increasing a diverse population of outstanding students, particularly graduate and
non-traditional students, on enhancing teaching excellence to attract the best faculty in the world, advancing
knowledge and high research to leverage global competiveness, expanding our outreach and community
engagement, and increasing funding and resources.
Administrative responsibilities and functions
Areas that report to me are: Administrative Council, Strategic Planning, Curriculum, Digital NAAB (National
Architectural Accrediting Board) Accreditation, Graduate Programs Review (University), Faculty Teaching
Schedule, Visiting Faculty hires, Academic Graduate Programs – Master of Architecture, Master of Science
in Architecture and Ph.D. development, Graduate Certificates, Graduate Advising, Graduate Student
Assistantships and Fellowships, Graduate Students Recruitment, Graduate Applications - digital process,
Influence on Financial Planning, Faculty Budget, College Culture and Events.
Number of direct reports: 7 (I am the Chair of the Administrative Council composed of: Associate Dean for
Research, Building Director, Advisor, IT Manager, Budget Director, Administrative Unit Coordinator,
Development Director) + 40 members of Graduate Faculty + Director of Academic Programs + Graduate
Advisor = Total 49
My responsibilities include the development of the NAAB accredited professional 5-½ year Master of
Architecture (M. Arch) and 4 Graduate Certificates in Digital Design and Fabrication, HealthCare Facilities
Design, Historic Preservation and Urban and Community Design. I am also responsible for the postprofessional Master of Science in Architecture with 2 newly created Specializations in Digital Design and
Fabrication (DDF) and in Urban and Community Design (UCD). A Specialization in Health and Design is in
preparation and will be offered in fall 2016. I am coordinating the interdisciplinary PhD program in Land-use
Planning, Management and Design, and I recently presented a reconfigured proposal to the University.
I work very closely with the Dean and the Associate Dean for Academics to develop the College Curriculum
and to attain the school’s teaching performance criteria, strategic planning and program learning objectives.
With the Associate Dean for Academics, I assign faculty teaching schedules. The two of us also direct hiring
of Instructors and Visiting Assistant Professors. While guiding faculty in the implementation of the new 2014
NAAB criteria in the curriculum, I provide direction in preparation for 2016 Accreditation as well as
developing the new curriculum Matrix for the College. I contributed significantly to the writing of the APR
report for the NAAB and along with the Dean, I review the SPC evidence for our Lubbock, El Paso and
Houston programs. My proposal was instrumental to the decision to adopt a model for Digital Accreditation,
placing our College as one among few in the nation meeting this standard.
In March 2015 the College went through a comprehensive Graduate Programs Review, which is scheduled
every six years and required by the University. A team of TTU internal and external members from outside
peer institutions visited the College and assessed our Graduate Programs. I was in charge of directing the
Review for the College, providing a comprehensive report of the past six years of operations, coordinating
the set up of the building with displays and exhibitions of work, and organizing the team visit’s schedule. I
prepared a complete dossier with materials as evidence of departmental functionality, budget and resources,
student data, faculty productivity and curriculum effectiveness.
Additionally, I have a major role in policy formation and I currently work closely with the College of
Architecture Curriculum Committee. Other major tasks include the chairing of the Administrative Council,
acting as an executive member of the Dean’s Council, and serving in key University functions as a member
of the University Strategic Planning Committee, the International Affairs Council, the STEM Advisory Board,
and as an internal reviewer of the Department of Design Graduate Programs.
2 My position allows me to have an influence on budgetary and financial planning and on fund raising and
institutional development projects. The Dean, the Associate Dean for Academics and I meet on a monthly
basis with our Budget Director to discuss and plan our resource allocations, staff and faculty needs and
program funds distribution. Throughout my career, I have been involved in seeking external funds and
resources at many levels. As a faculty and professional architect, I developed my own expertise in grantwriting of different kinds, for instance a NSF STEM grant proposal as P.I. in collaboration with the
Department of Mathematics & Statistics at Texas Tech University, or the FY13 Internal Competitive Funding
Opportunity to Advance Scholarship in the Creative Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Regione
Veneto Public Research Grant, Industrial Research, Development and Technology Transfer in stone and
marble manufacturing. Since beginning at the TTU College of Architecture in 2008, I submitted grant and
funding proposals for a total of $ 6,700,000.
Although it is part of the Dean’s job to be able to make requests, as Associate Dean I have personally
participated in fund raising and institutional development projects. In this regard, I co-authored the Strategic
Plan and Vision for the future of the TTU College of Architecture, with a proposal for an Interdisciplinary
Fabrication Lab that includes plans for a facilities expansion, equipment needs, and a Metal-Wood Shop and
Digital Fabrication Shop reorganization, with a new layout and the new construction of additional spaces.
The accurate and in depth documentation was presented to the Provost, the University Administration and to
several private donors. The funding request was for $ 6 million. Since 2013, we have generated $1.75
million in grants and funding from private foundations, Texas Tech University, and the state of Texas.
I enjoyed the experience of traveling with our College’s Development Officer as a representative of the Dean
and on those occasions, while I had the chance to meet alumni and private donors, I have been instrumental
in the orientation of their gifts and donations. I also work very closely with faculty to expedite external
research and entrepreneurial collaborations with the profession and the industry, supporting teams with
student participation and promoting innovative, creative and globally engaged initiatives. Our Graduate
Certificates and the new Master of Science specializations are acting as attractors for graduate recruitment,
increasing enrollment and meeting institutional goals for revenue generation. I am currently working on a
new M.S. specialization in Critical Practice and I am looking into the deliverables of new on-line courses
tracking a complete on-line Certificate for traditional and non-traditional students and/or professionals.
There are many ways to augment support for a College and the key is to be creative in what you do and
spark convincing initiatives. Striving to prepare our students for a professional career, I am dedicated to the
expansion of our graduate external programs including: our award winning Practicum+Studio program
(NCARB Award Winner), the Residency program, the experience based Atelier Studios, and the Visiting
Critics (Marfa) Studio. These educational opportunities are crucial to establish relationships with top national
and international firms and they significantly contribute to the enhancement of the College’s reputation. As
tangible results, prestigious firms participate in our studios, they sponsor students and in many cases they
support the College with gifts. Most importantly, after our 7-months required Practicum + Studio program,
99% of our students receive a job offer.
I also work very closely with the Dean and the Associate Dean for Academics on the development of our El
Paso program, funded by a $ 6 million STEM grant. Over the past few years we have increased the number
of students in our program from 25 to 75, most of whom will transfer to Lubbock after graduating with the
Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the El Paso campus. The El Paso program generates much
revenue for the College and I directly work with the Director on potentiating their curriculum in close
alignment with ours, in order to prepare students at the undergraduate level to be more successful for
admission into the graduate program in Lubbock.
3 Financial help is crucial to recruit students and our College cannot yet afford enough Teaching Assistant or
Graduate Part Time Instructor positions, which would support students with fees and benefits. I am
responsible for the assignment of College funds for graduate assistantships and for the allocation of the
Graduate School’s recruitment assistantships and fellowships. This requires an efficient coordination with
Graduate School unit, our program Directors and Advisors. One of my contributions to the efficiency of the
organizational structure has also been the restructuring of our graduate admissions policy and requirements,
working on a more flexible and completely digital application process, now mostly centralized in the College
of Architecture.
Curricular development and review/ Formation of new programs and reinvigoration of existing
curricula
In my administrative career, I have initiated new programs that rapidly gained national reputation, promoted
interdisciplinary collaborations for teaching and research projects, and supported proposals for e-learning
and on-line courses. I am proactive in national, international and diverse recruitment (faculty and students),
and in seeking and managing a broad range of external resources. The growing visibility and recognition of
the CoA graduate programs at the national and international level reflects a rewarding path of beneficial
changes. I have focused strongly on the expansion of the scope and quality of our graduate programs that
reflects student success and enhances career preparation. Under my leadership, over the past three years,
we had a 15% increased graduate enrollment, an 80% increase of international students and this year our
graduate applications increased by 20%.
At Texas Tech University, the Master of Architecture qualifies the graduates to begin acquiring experience in
areas of architectural practice towards licensure. A Graduate Certificate has become an efficient way to
encourage students to develop useful, career-building expertise within the structure of a first professional
degree in Architecture. The four tracks offer substantive opportunities for student-based research that have
the potential to contribute to specialized knowledge associated with the discipline of Architecture. The
Graduate Certificate programs have been widely successful, where typically more than 50% of the NAAB
accredited first professional Master of Architecture students are enrolled in our specialties. More than 60% of
our undergraduate students from the CoA pre-professional Bachelor of Science in Architecture (the
undergraduate portion of our M.Arch) decide to continue their graduate studies with us. I strongly believe
that the success of both the curricula (grad and undergrad) is strictly related. In my role as Professor and
level Coordinator, I always aimed to instill the importance of exceptional design foundations. From an
administrator’s perspective, I do not see our graduate programs’ content as a separate entity from the
undergraduate sequence. Based on this inclusive approach, I implemented instructional tasks involving our
first two years of the curriculum, where our most talented and advanced students nurture and mentor the
youngest and act as role models. Each semester, for example, students towards the end of their Digital
Design and Fabrication Certificate are hired to take part in assignments and tutorials and assist faculty with
the instruction of Digital Media (DM) courses, which are offered in the first two undergraduate years. The
reinvention and reconfiguration of the Digital Media course sequence that I implemented by proposing new
syllabi and a new series of assignments have impacted the vision of the CoA’s curriculum. Students are
exposed to the most innovative instruction models and latest digital tools and techniques. The DM courses
apply strategies of visualization at different levels of complexity, introduce students to novel techniques for
model making, and relate them to various geometric challenges. They are designed to work as the
supporting courses tightly integrated with undergraduate design studios and the technology sequence. The
teaching materials were recently published in the form of a textbook with the title Digital Media for Design,
co-authored with Prof. Christian Pongratz.
4 One way in which curricula review and development have happened at the COA is through the Master of
Science in Architecture with new specializations in Digital Design and Fabrication and in Urban and
Community Design. A most recent effort is creating an interdisciplinary specialization in Design and Health in
coordination with the Associate Dean for Research, a Health and Wellness Design expert and a newly-hired
ad hoc Assistant Professor. We are currently defining the interdisciplinary study plan with two tracks of
interest involving the College of Architecture, the TTU Health Sciences Center and the Department of Public
Health. This specialization will be offered starting in fall 2016, including a special dedication to new forms of
on-line instruction addressing non-traditional students.
I was also responsible for revising the curriculum for the Master of Science in Architecture by reducing the
number of credit hours to 34 and setting a common structure of semesters and courses for each
specialization. A new idea was also incorporating the recent inclusion of International Studies linked to our
Study Abroad programs and the Mexico and Shanghai topical studios. This new model received large
consensus among the faculty and the students, increased the graduation rate and shortened time for
graduation. It also established a solid pedagogical relationship with our Study Abroad Programs, a very
familiar terrain for me. In fact, I direct the program in Verona, Italy, an intensive six week experience where
undergraduate students in their 4th year and last studio are engaged with the redefinition of an urban open
space operating as a form of design-based critical inquiry within a historical context. Through my personal
professional network, I am participating with the Verona Studio to the International Marmomacc Stone
Academy (with AIA, RIBA and RAIC), and to the Marmomacc International Exhibition of Stone Design and
Technology in Verona, Italy since 2008. Vital to the program are also the relationships I have established
with The Universita’ di Roma - La Sapienza, the Politecnico di Milano, the Istituto Universitario di Architettura
di Venezia and the Universita’ degli Studi di Ferrara. All of these venues are important opportunities for
international partnerships as vehicles to increase faculty and student visibility and reputation.
Based on my expertise in computational design, material based processes and fabrication technologies, I
co-founded the Digital Design and Fabrication Program (DDF). Positioned at the intersection of architecture,
engineering and computation fields, the DDF Program’s sustainable, interdisciplinary direction and outreach
to other departments at Texas Tech University develop applied research approaches. In the attempt to
increase physical resources, one of the challenges was to provide space for sophisticated fabrication
equipment that would be available to all Architecture students and for interdisciplinary use with Engineering
and other units on campus. Since the DDF Program’s official inception in 2011, a 3-axis CNC router, three
3D printers, three laser cutters, a vacuum forming machine, a blade cutter, a wet-lab for casting, and a 6axis Robot have been added to the Shop state-of-the-art facilities. We are currently invested to the
completion of the new Interdisciplinary Fabrication Lab expansion. The new facility is currently in the final
design phase and it will provide 2,500 sq. ft. of additional lab space for cutting-edge technologies associated
with the ongoing research of our faculty and students. As previously mentioned, The DDF Program is having
a strong impact on the College curriculum, attracting an increasing number of national and international
graduate students. Grant proposals, parametric workshops and collaborations are developed together with
the departments of Computer Sciences, Industrial Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering,
Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, School of Art, and
externally with the Architecture Department at the University of Kaiserslautern, Germany and the Facolta’ di
Architettura at the Universita’ di Ferrara, Italy. I strongly supported the cross listed course on Arch-Robotics
jointly taught by faculty from Architecture and Engineering and attended by both Colleges’ students.
One of my current tasks and interests is the re-design of our PhD in Land-use Planning, Management and
Design. After a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the program involving faculty and currently
enrolled students, I developed a first proposal for a newly reconfigured Ph.D. program in Architecture with
three areas of specialization: 1- Design Studies; 2 - Building Technologies and Computation; and 3 –
5 Resource Management and Analysis. Students will thus be prepared for future transformative academic and
professional roles through innovative approaches related to the built environment. The Program’s novel
intent is to strengthen knowledge and education in Design while advancing scientific inquiry and scholarship
about technology and issues of resource management and analysis, environmentally sustainable studies
and land-use planning. The Graduate Programs Review report emphasized full support for this proposal,
indicating that this would be a successful path to pursue.
As part of future program plans, I am working with the Dean on a proposal for a Master of Science track in
Critical Practice that would be attractive for professionals with an established practice, and who would like to
earn a graduate degree reflecting on the critical evaluation of their professional experience. We have begun
the process with our Pro-Practice and Graduate Urban Theory courses, both already delivered online, and
we are looking into the deliverables of a complete on-line Certificate for traditional and non-traditional
students and/or professionals. This is addressing one of the Higher Education priorities focusing on elearning and on-line degrees for non-traditional out-of-campus students. It requires a great effort from faculty
and administration and a review of pedagogical approaches and teaching methods.
In my daily work, I continuously encourage the interaction between design disciplines. For example, our
Collaboration Studio requires integrated design teams that include students from three disciplines:
Landscape Architecture, Interior Design and Architecture. This studio is also comprised of members from
the College of Agriculture Science and Natural Resources, the College of Human Sciences and the College
of Engineering. All projects are structured to encourage design interaction from problem formation to design
development. Students are evaluated on their design skills as well as their ability to collaborate in teams.
The Collaboration Studio is supported with funds to provide for a variety of outside consultants representing
the student’s disciplines.
Accomplishments and research agenda
I am a licensed Architect, member of the Italian Order of Architects and an Associate AIA, a fully
accomplished scholar with a multicultural experience, and the author of several books. As a principal of
Pongratz Perbellini Architects, an international award-winning atelier, my research and design work are
highly recognized and featured in professional and non-professional press related to the contemporary
discourse of architecture.
Upon my arrival at Texas Tech University, my previous academic and professional experiences have
become integrated on several levels into the College of Architecture. I exemplify solid leadership in the
College’s research agenda, promoting new collaborations with colleagues across Texas Tech, which forms
the backbone for interdisciplinary national and international research grant proposals. A distinctive trait of my
scholarly activities and achievements is the ability to cross over between academia, research and
professional work supported by a number of important publications. I love to go beyond the classroom and
span from high profile research explorations to real world practice in the field of building technology. My
eclectic experience embeds multiple domains and a synergetic nature connecting a constantly evolving
pedagogy to design inquiries.
My work focuses on emergent computational strategies that require engagement with technology and
promote novel design abilities and sensitivities. The knowledge of new digital models often activates
unexpected interrelations between form, material, structure, space and their systems’ properties, behaviors
and performances. I am particularly interested in the exploration of emergent materials identified as design
processes with an expressive and, equally important, with a sustainable performativity. Relevant to me is the
question of the relationship between material, form and space, between the building sciences and their
6 integrated systems and how this relationship affects a sensorial experience of architecture impacting the
quality of our life.
New multi-layered structural and formal complexities unfold from digital spatial organizations at the scale of
details and with the application of various construction techniques. I place specific emphasis on the
potentials triggered by 3D-datatransfer and new modes of production that explore digital customization and
manufacturing of buildings and their components. The inquiry into modalities of digital-craft, fabrication
processes and questions of material innovation allow me to revise and implement studies of material
systems, their high-performances and intrinsic characteristics, which I engage early in the design process
and are linked to CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) and CNC (computationally numerically controlled)
techniques.
Aspirations, opportunities and challenges
Interdisciplinarity and new knowledge
To educate world citizens, institutions such as the University of Florida must engage a transformative and
evolving environment while still employing strategies that result in goals achieved. It is one of the Dean’s
priorities to provide a unique educational experience for students by promoting vigorous curricula, creative
learning opportunities and financial support. My mission would be to prepare students to engage with
leading design practices through a deep understanding of integrated specialized areas associated with
global issues.
One of my top commitments would be the emphasis on interdisciplinary, cross college research initiatives
and joint degree plans promoting collaborations with Departments and Colleges on campus, but also with
national and international institutions. It is vital to develop potential external research opportunities in
collaboration with the profession and the industry, supporting teams with faculty, practitioners and student
participation. Future modes of practice demand the expansion of research skills, the sharing and distribution
of experimentations towards the attainment of new knowledge.
Environmental sustainability, economic and social challenges require a holistic re-thinking of the discipline of
architecture, by blurring its boundaries and working across fields and expertizes. In response to the
complexities of fast changing scenarios generated by technological advances combined with an increasing
consciousness of the finite nature of our resources, it has become clear that a larger, integrated body of
knowledge must inform new pedagogies and a responsible professional awareness is inevitable. The
expansion of research on topics engaged with interdisciplinary models accelerates a wider impact. I believe
it is vital to activate and support important venues where profession, industry and academia meet and share
contents, research, and experiences.
Global presence
Strategies such as study abroad programs implemented in curricula, international studies, and partnerships
with national and international universities and organizations create opportunities for recruitment, for
innovative research approaches and life connections as part of the goal of being a global University where
innovation and technology play a central role. New forms of instruction such as online, distance,
asynchronous have grown rapidly in the past few years and require different approaches to ensure quality.
Our locality and our presence are often related to a magical geographical condition made of the intersections
of landscapes and energies, considered as characters encompassing urban and regional significance. How
can we treat our location as a ground for research, as a place for inquiry and investigation on issues
impacting the world?
7 Many institutions have an increasing number of programs abroad for a semester or more, and a large
number of foreign students study in the U.S. Encouraging a worldview and the first-hand knowledge of a
foreign culture, the CoA at Texas Tech requires each undergraduate student to complete the final
undergraduate architectural design studio with a choice of international study abroad programs. These
programs, organized and led by our faculty, are currently located in Paris-France, Seoul-South Korea,
Seville-Spain, and Verona-Italy with about 80 students.
Outreach
Community engaged projects are vibrant opportunities to connect Colleges and University with the various
stakeholders. In the past four years I acted as the COA organizer of the Art+Architecture initiative, in
collaboration with the College of Visual & Performing Arts and the Lubbock Arts Alliance, which resulted in
student work exhibitions and recruitment events at the Lubbock Civic Center. Projects such as Avenue J CITY GREEN SCAPE and Urban Stage were two important urban design moments involving students,
faculty, the city, an array of community players and TTU units in the vision for the revitalization of downtown
Lubbock where I contributed as Design Team Director. Two graduate design studios played a leading role in
analyzing two city blocks. A full semester was dedicated to designing and fabricating installations which
acted as catalysts for lively events. Students’ projects incorporated hands-on experiences on real
constructions that improved obsolete urban conditions and addressed social, economic and sustainability
issues impacting the community’s life.
Valuing people
Among human resources, the faculty is the pulsating force of any University. Recruitment and retention of
outstanding faculty is a vehicle for excellence. I feel it is important to identify current and future areas of
collaboration and interdisciplinary research, strategically hire exceptional faculty and collegially invest
resources to facilitate productivity in a vibrant environment. I have strived throughout my career to support
smart, talented people and collaborative efforts and initiatives in any way possible. At the CoA, I am directly
involved with new hires for tenure-track faculty with research interests in our developing specializations, with
new energy and expertise that can help with the graduate programs expansion and competitiveness. In the
same way, it is crucial to find mechanisms for reinvigorating the extant faculty. I truly enjoy in using my
experience and background to guide, mentor and support faculty, students and staff. The research skills of
the faculty are propelling forces that impact student abilities to participate in scholarly activities and critical
thinking explorations.
As Associate Dean, I set goals for operational efficiency, faculty productivity and college reputation. My
communication and motivational skills help me to create an efficient and organized working environment,
where well performing and competent staff members are recognized and rewarded. I work very closely with
the Director of Academic Programs and the Chief of Staff and we established a valuable synergy based on
mutual respect and tangible results. My daily interactions with advisors, recruiter and administrative
assistants are positive and supportive. I was proud of our graduate advisor when she recently obtained her
Master degree. I felt that it was the right thing to do when I accommodated her schedule to facilitate the
accomplishment of her studies. Her higher education achievement resulted as a significant return on
investment for us, because I believe that well-trained, motivated and educated staff can make a huge
difference and are instrumental in reaching University objectives.
At Texas Tech, I am working closely with the Dean of the Graduate School with scholarship and fellowship
allotments to recruit and retain the best graduate students. After presenting a clear recruitment plan with
specified needs and goals, we are able to offer financial support to new incoming M.S. and Ph.D. students.
In the past two years we have been assigned by the Provost $200,000 from an incentive fund and our
8 alumni generosity allows us to administer Graduate Endowment Balances for Scholarships in the amount of
$850,000.
Diversity
I believe that all forms of diversity are great enrichments for any institution and I am focused on advocating
the success of faculty and students from potentially marginalized groups. Embracing a broad array of
perspectives and including multiple voices is key to creating a university with successful academic, research
and service agendas. Our college is the most diverse at Texas Tech with faculty coming from 12 different
countries and we celebrate a large Hispanic community within our student population. The majority of our
Hispanic students are first generation college students. Females are still underrepresented among faculty
and students, standing at a low 28%. Together with a group of faculty and staff, I supported an Award for
The Best Female Student at the CoA, which is competitively assigned each year and linked to Fe_Arch
event. This is one of our most popular initiatives at the CoA, which is a daylong celebration of women in
Architecture hosting prestigious keynote speakers lecturing on their professional achievements.
Leadership
Working at Texas Tech University has given me the chance to engage with a vivacious, continuously
growing, highly collaborative environment, which has facilitated the realization of my professional and
personal goals.
I hold insight, fearlessness and communication acumen combined with positivity as my major personal
characteristics. My leadership would vigorously advocate the College of Design, Construction and Planning’s
strengths and potentials, and I would apply my ability to carry out a clear vision in continuing a path of
success for the University of Florida. I would consult faculty, staff, students and alumni to set an agenda of
priorities and assess programs, activities and budget within the College to promote productivity, visibility and
reputation. I find myself ready for the next step in academic leadership. I aspire to a higher administrative
rank as a means of leading the reinvention of an entrepreneurial direction for the College of Design,
Construction and Planning at the University of Florida. I believe that my experiences in administrative,
academic and professional positions have prepared me well to spearhead increasingly responsible roles. I
respectfully and humbly believe that I have the qualification, leadership skills, and commitment to serve as
Dean of the College of Design, Construction and Planning at the University of Florida.
Please accept my appreciation for consideration of my application.
Sincerely,
Maria R. Perbellini,

RESEARCH INTERESTS Parametric surface structures, with the focus on emergent computational strategies that require engagement with technology and promote novel design abilities and sensitivities. Computational models promote complex interrelations between form, material, structure, space and their systems’ behavior and performance. The scripted and parametrically defined surface structures are constituted of material and aesthetic performativity (patterns are also considered). Equally important is the question of the relationship between form and space, between the envelope and the content. The definition and control of parametric relationships and values in order to have new and advanced geometric configurations. New multi-‐layered structural and formal complexities unfold from the parameters continuous evolution and differentiation. Design Process, research on developing design strategies for digital constructs. In particular, as the implementation of software technology in an experimental design process to study emergent and generative applications. The interest is on Surface Design, an accumulation of techniques to foster the translation of affect into architecture, a digital inscription of rhythmic and harmonic patterns in architectural design, which propagate the creation of architecture of experience with sensorial surfaces. Digital Design and Fabrication, research into materials and experimentation with a parametric fabrication of digital spatial organizations at the scale of details and with various construction techniques. Specific emphasis is put on the potentials triggered by 3D-‐datatransfer and new modes of mass-‐production, which explore digital customization and manufacturing of buildings and their components. The inquiry into the contemporary modalities of manufacturing processes and questions of material innovation afford to revise and implement new techniques of design and digital data translation into the fabrication process. Digital making; Digital Craft and Fabrication; studies of material systems, their performances, properties and intrinsic characteristics enter early in the design process and are linked to CAM (computer-‐aided manufacturing) and CNC (computationally numerically controlled)-‐milling techniques. Qualitative properties: texture, ornament, color, transparency/opacity, light/shadow. Intermedial Architecture, inquiry on the integration of actual and virtual realities in architecture; interactive environments; implementation of IT-‐infrastructures in architecture and urban design in order to experiment with the evolution of new organizational structures: -‐ Flexcity, New Urban Strategies for e-‐Densification, Research Project supported by Mike Hogg Urban Scholars Grant, The University of Texas at Austin, School of Architecture, Austin, USA, 2001; -‐ Project “The Leisure Palace”, Architectural Design and IT-‐Concept Development for Lehrter Bahnhof Berlin, Germany, 2001-‐2006; -‐ Xspace – e-‐Density Urbanism, Research Project, UT-‐Austin, School of Architecture, Austin, USA, 2002.
