Library Update Our library has been a busy place this month full of learning and Book Fair fun! Some of our junior classes have explored an interactive game called Turtle Island, in order to learn more about First Nations resources, on which they have since created a presentation with a partner and will present to the class to share their findings. Our primary students have participated in a number of literacy focussed lessons which are based on themes being discussed in their classroom as well. These lessons include: making inferences, writing short narratives and exploring various points of view. Authors’ Visit: Our grade 1-3 students had an opportunity to meet author Tim Beiser and discover all about how he became a children’s book author. His silly poem and song was a hit and students were engaged and participated in a puppet show. Our grade 4-5 students met author Evan Munday whom many of them had read his book Dial M for Morna in our Forest of Reading Program. The students asked a number of questions and some even had a chance to role play as a character from his third book which will be released in September. Upcoming Events: Forty Forest of Reading Junior students are looking forward to our trip to the Powerade Centre to participate in the Forest of Reading Celebration on May 21st. All of these students should be proud of their contribution to our Brandon Gate Edublog! Jump Rope for Heart Some of our Brandon Gate students had an exciting time as they went to Dunrankin Public School to participate in the Jump for Heart launching program. The students demonstrated a variety of skills as a way to inspire both adults and children to recognize the importance of taking care of their health, through exercise. They also did an excellent job in the Brandon Gate Kick Off Assembly on April 29. Highlighting Students’ Work Student Recognition Brandon Gate’s Character Development focus for the month of April was Responsibility. Responsibility means being accountable for and reliable in your actions and commitment. Students show they are responsibility when they: Ten Wonderful Things Taking my ball to school Resting Substitute teacher Not getting bullied Going on Prodigy Running Getting Certificates Getting to talk Writing ~Emmanuel, Grade 1 Persuasive Writing – School Snack I love choosing my favourite snack to eat and I think vegetables are the things we should have for snack. Here are the reasons why I chose vegetables as the school snack. My first reason is that it’s healthy for you. Students will get a benefit from eating vegetables because they contain fibre which helps you feel full, lose weight and prevent constipation. Vegetables contain water. There are also some vitamins in vegetables that help your body to grow. Secondly, vegetables are natural. It is also one of the four food groups in the Canada Food Guide. Lastly, they make fun salads. There can be lot of different colours in your creation and a variety of texture. You can also use a mixture of sauces. In conclusion, I think vegetables would be a perfect and healthy snack to be served in school. ~Sean, Grade 4 Author Evan Munday’s Visit On April 21, Evan Munday came to Brandon Gate to make a presentation to the junior students. He wrote and illustrated the series of books, “Dead Kid Detective.” He told us what motivated him to write the stories and to my surprise, he had also read many Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys books and other scary stories. He described what his books were about, and mentioned that they were like Nancy Drew but the friends are ghosts. This made me a fan of his books straight away because I totally love Nancy Drew books and I’m a big fan of its author, Carolyn Keene. After, he asked for some volunteers to play the characters in the Dead Kid Detective book. The characters are Tabetha, Cyril, October, Tabetha, Derrick and Monlya. I was fortune that I got chosen as Tabetha and I was practically glowing with glee! Next Mr. Munday told us that his books had a lot of history in them. He also said he started to write at a young age and that inspired me to start writing as well. ~Shafaa, Grade 4 Spring Spring is birds chirping Spring is April showers Spring is kids playing outside in the park But most of all Spring is beautiful because I don’t have to wear my jacket ~Sharanpreet, Grade 1 Spring is air smelling sweet Spring is blooming flowers Spring is rainy days like April showers But most of all spring is green grass ~Navleen, Grade 1 Spring is when the air is smelling sweet Spring is time for rainbows Kids playing in the park Spring is sunny days Spring is Easter But most of all Spring is a beautiful time to go outside. ~Gurleen.
