They are to the north-west of Pontebba and allow the connection to the Municipalities of Moggio and Paularo. This wide area is bounded by the main mountain ranges of the Pontebba area (Carnic Alps): the Gleris range (2058 metres), Mount Chiavals (2098 metres) and the Zuc del Bor (2195 metres), well visible going up from Pontebba along Val Aupa, and the Creta Grauzaria (2065 metres) going up towards Moggio. Along Val Pontebbana it is possi- ble to admire the whole range of Mount Cavallo (2239 metres) and of Mount Malvuerich (1899 metres). A very interesting area from the natural, environmental and hiking point of view. (11) The Pramollo area (1530 metres), too, is situated in the Carnic Alps on the border with Austria. The ridgeline constitutes the watershed between the Danube catchment basin, in Austria, and the Adriatic catchment basin, in Italy. Both the Italian toponym Pramollo (soft field) and the German Nassfeld (wet field) owe their origin to the presence of humid and swampy zones on the pass. The area, easy to reach along the road that goes up from Pontebba, is very important from the natural and geological point of view. This area, besides being very rich in fossils, is well-known for the unique presence in Italy of the Wulfenia Carinthiaca, a plant that belongs to the pre-glacial flora, which during its blooming time (June - July) colours the fields with a peculiar shade of blue. 230 a 1641 M. S. DANIELE - CODROIPO The wonderful Julian Alps NATURE, SPORTS AND FASCINATING TRADITIONS In Friuli Venezia Giulia’s north-eastern part, a wide and varied territory extends from the subalpine area to the Julian Alps providing visitors with nature, history, art, sports, food and wine delicacies, traditions and much more... to be discovered or rediscovered. In the Tarvisio area, where an unspoilt age-old Forest provides a unique environment, you will find unspoilt places, where traditions and events related to the history of the land are topical. The view over the Alpine summits is amazing: Mangart, Jôf Fuart, Jôf di Montasio and Canin. The Fusine Lakes are surrounded by beautiful woods and paths; the effect of the colours of the waters of the Raibl lake is extremely charming. The traditions of Resia, owing to their peculiarity, are still being studied. Do not miss the fascinating pilgrimage destination of the Monte Santo (Holy Mountain) of Lussari. Of great importance is the Natural Park of the Julian Pre-Alps, which extends over six municipalities and features fascinating paths. Sanctuary of Mount Lussari Sella Prevala Mount Mangart Tarvisio Fusine Lakes Sunset on the Montasio FAGAGNA-UDINE Pers Treppo Piccolo UDINE UDINE - VENEZIA Fraelacco UDINE UDINE UDINE Tarvisio and its age-old forest make musical instruments of fine workmanship, is very valuable. The fauna is rich and varied: among the mammals one finds the chamois, the deer, the ibex, the roe deer, the fox, the pine marten, the badge, the variable hare, the squirrel, the yellow-necked wild mouse, the common and the dwarf shrew. The bear and the lynx have been sighted for some years. Among the birds, the grouse (that is also the symbol of the forest), the black grouse, the golden eagle, the eagle-owl, the griffon, the kestrel, the sparrow-hawk, the raven, the black woodpecker and the three-toed woodpecker. The first historical information dates back to the year 1007, when Emperor of Germany Henry II the Saint donated the territory of the forest of Tarvisio to the Bishopric of Bamberg, in Bavaria. In 1759 it was purchased by Maria Theresa Empress of Austria. In the 19th century the forest was property of several noblemen until the Austrian Government, worried about CIVIDALE CIVIDALE the heavy deforestation caused by the frequent transfers of property and motivated by the need to ensure social peace in a border area important from a military point of view, bought the land again and entrusted its management to State forest technicians. At the end of the First World War of 19151918, on the basis of the Peace Treaty of Saint Germain in 1919, the forest passed to Italy and was entrusted to Italy’s State Property Office. With the Lateran Pacts, the property of the ex Austrian religious funds was joined to the Italian state property to constitute a company managed by the Church Fund, which now is dependent on the Italian Ministry of the Interior. 02 Fusine Lakes 03 Raibl Lake The valley of the Fusine Lakes, a Site of Community Interest, is one of the most fascinating places in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The lakes of glacial origin are connected to one another by easy paths hidden in a thick Norway spruce forest and are located at the bottom of the Mangart mountain range. These places transmit a feeling of serenity and imposingness that immediately allows to be one with nature. One can see some of the biggest erratic boulders (large blocks transported from their place of origin, especially by glacial action) in the Alps. The biggest one, the Pirona or Rudolffels rock, has a volume slightly greater than 30,000 cubic metres. The Raibl or Predil Lake is situated about ten kilometres south of Tarvisio, in an ancient glacial valley. Its waters are clear and cold, of a deep green-blue colour. An islet, a relict of a partly destroyed and partly submerged moraine arc, creates a very fascinating and mysterious landscape that has produced many legends. One of these is the Legend of the Lake: «Once upon a time, in the place where the lake lies, there was a nice verdant valley with a populated and rich town. But the inhabitants were insensitive and hardhearted. In a dark and cold winter night, while the people were safe in their warm homes, a young woman carrying her little son arrived in the Val Resia and Julian Pre-Alps Park Valbruna, Val Saisera and the malghe Fusine Lakes and Raibl Lake 01 Tarvisio and its age-old forest If one excludes the parks, Tarvisio is Italy’s largest state forest: 24,000 hectares of Alpine area, 15,000 of which are covered by productive woods managed by the Corpo Forestale dello Stato (State Forestry Corps). The forest is crossed by the Fella river and extends up to the border with Austria and Slovenia, along the whole Valcanale and the Slizza valley, reaching the municipalities of Pontebba, Malborghetto-Valbruna and Tarvisio. It includes many valleys to the south and to the north of this river, such as the deep valleys of Rio Bianco and of Malborghetto, the deep valleys of Ugovizza, Valbruna, Canale del Bartolo and the Rio del Lago valley. It represents one of the most precious natural areas in Italy and one of the most complete zoological systems in the Alps. There are two Integral Nature Reserves: that of Rio Bianco and that of Mount Cucco. The timber produced here is particularly appreciated for technological uses. A quality of red deal (called “of resonance”), which is used to UDINE town begging in vain for a shelter. Only after long wandering she was welcomed warmly by a humble family. In the night a storm, earthquakes and rain hit the town, creating the Raibl lake and sparing only the small house where the merciful family lived. The woman and her child (the Virgin and the Holy Child) had disappeared. They say that the remains on the islet in the Northern part of the lake are those of that very house». 04 Valbruna 05 Val Saisera Valbruna, a hamlet in the Municipality of Malborghetto-Valbruna, situated in a plain surrounded by the mounts Lussari, Nabois, Jôf Fuart, Montasio and Jôf di Miezegnot, is very well-known from a tourist point of view. In the past it was the destination of many tourists, among whom we would like to mention the mountaineer-poet Julius Kugy who, between 1885 and 1910, chose Valbruna as a starting point for his climbs in the Julian Alps. Val Saisera and its mountains are one of the areas of greatest environmental and landscape value in Valcanale, but they also staged hard fights during the First World War, in memory of which there are many war remains, in particular along the sides of the Jôf di Somdogna and of the Jôf di Miezegnot, which made up the boundary line during the First World War. For many centuries these imposing natural walls that separate Val Dogna from Valcanale have been 06 The Malghe (shepherd’s huts) of Ugovizza The wide area between Mount Acomizza (1813 metres) and Mount Coco (1941 metres) is in the Carnic Alps, along the border with Austria. The main mountain is Mount Osternig (2050 metres), an imposing pasture dome from which one enjoys a wonderful view over the Carnic Alps and Julian Alps, the Karavanke and the Tauern. The peculiar morphology of the mountains has contributed to forming, in the area, wonderful valleys that are named after the homonymous streams that cross them: Val Uqua, Val Filza and Val Rauna, where several malghe (shepherd’s huts), stavoli (shelters) and mountain huts have been built. In the area there are also some farms reachable by car or by short walks. 07 Val Resia of great strategic-military relevance between Venice and Austria and made up the political boundary of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. From the town of Valbruna, along an asphalt road as well, it is possible to reach tthe Saisera Alpine hut, where one enjoys a wonderful view over the Julian Alps. In winter this valley features some of the most beautiful cross-country ski runs in the Tarvisio area. Val Resia is situated in the northeastern part of Friuli Venezia Giulia. It is an Alpine valley that extends in a west-east direction for about 20 kilometres. To the east the valley is closed by a mountain range, of which Mount Canin (2587 metres) is the highest point. This range marks the boundary between Italy and Slovenia. The origins of Resia are linked to the settlement of its population in the valley, that might go back to the 7th century. Once isolated between the Musi mountains to the south and the imposing Canin massif to the east and to the north, Resia is an extre- mely important linguistic island rich in traditions. Here people speak a peculiar language, which is the subject of many studies, and very interesting traditions (costumes, songs, dances, ceremonies) are preserved and handed down. From the historical point of view, being subject to the jurisdiction of the Abbey of Moggio, it followed its events over the centuries. Under the Venetian rule it had a certain importance for the defence of the Saddles of Carnizza and of Guarda allowing to reach the Isonzo valley in Slovenia. It is for this reason that a military garrison was present in the valley for a long time with fortifications in Stolvizza and in San Giorgio. Besides the unquestioned linguistic and cultural importance, nature is another important aspect of the valley. the extreme landscape diversification caused by the morphology, by the orientation of the mountains, by the variety of the soils and of the microclimates, is particularly rich in species. For the same reason, zoological elements of southern, circum-Mediterranean and eastern origin, such as the Greek partridge, the Forest Dormouse, Horvath’s rock lizard and the horned viper, and of Eurasian origin, such as the chamois, the snow fieldmouse and the marmot, coexist with all the Alpine mammalian ungulates and various birds of prey. Hikes are organized all over the year to let all mountain lovers discover nature. 08 Julian Pre-Alps Park The Julian Pre-Alps Natural Park, in Prato di Resia, extends across the Julian Alps and Pre-Alps in the territories of the Municipalities of Chiusaforte, Lusevera, Moggio Udinese, Resia, Resiutta and Venzone, on a total area of about 10,000 hectares (the second largest protected area in the region). When the star arrives, the charming live Nativity will come to life accompanied by a concert of Christmas songs. The event will be proposed again on 26th December and 5th January as well. THE CARNIVAL OF VAL RESIA According to tradition, there are two kinds of masks: the babaci/kucaci, simply wearing old and wornout clothes and with their faces dirty with soot or charcoal, and the te lipe bile maškire (the beautiful white masks). The latter are made up of one or more white skirts adorned with lace and ribbons and a hat decorated with colourful paper flowers and small rattles. The men (maškarun) wear a lower hat. UDINE A HABSBURG MONUMENT TO THE NAPOLEONIC WARS Tarvisio - Boscoverde This work by sculptor Josef Kassin, which represents an Austrian rifleman, was erected in memory of the fallen in the wars fought in Carinthia between 1797 and 1813. MONUMENT TO CAPTAIN HENSEL Malborghetto - Ss 13 State Road A monument made up of a pyramid of stone slabs with a memorial inscription. At the base, a large lion in metal alloy, lying on fasces and on a shield, is stabbed on its side with the point of a lance, to symbolize the Habsburg Empire hit to death in the 1809 war. It was erected in memory of Captain Hensel and of the defenders of the Fortress of Malborghetto, whose remains are still visible. CIVIDALE / UDINE 5 km MONUMENT TO CAPTAIN HERMANN Tarvisio - Passo Predil A monument identical to that of Malborghetto, but this is dedicated to Captain Hermann and to the defenders of the Fortress that stood on the Pass. The church that we can see today was rebuilt in 1924, after the devastation of the First World War. The roof, too, was made identical to the original one. Today it has one single nave covered by a very beautiful and peculiar wooden ceiling with ship hull design (a tribute to the basilica of Aquileia, whose Patriarch has been a spiritual and temporal reference for centuries) and decorated with painted stars. Already in the 16th century, Slav, Italian and German believers climbed up the “Sentiero del Pellegrino”, (Pilgrim’s Path – C.A.I. path n. 613) to reach the Sanctuary and worship the Virgin with the Child (a small wooden statue, whose mantles are made in silver foil). Now it can also be reached by a modern cable-car from Camporosso. Mount Lussari is also a famous ski area where Women’s World Cup races take place and where it is possible to ski at night as well . St. Egidio’s Church Camporosso St. Ann’s Church Cave del Predil St. Leonard’s Church Fusine in Val Romana It dates back to 1444 and was the first parish church in the valley. Its bell tower dates back to 1769 and features the characteristic onionshaped dome. The three-nave interior features a polygonal lateGothic apse with vaulted rib ceiling. On the ceiling there are some eighteenth-century paintings. The high altar of 1704 is adorned by the wooden statue of St. Egidio. The chapel of St. Barbara was erected in the 16th century and was afterwards destroyed by a flooding. Thanks to Susanna Struckel, today’s Parish church was built in the same place in 1730. The bell tower features the peculiar “Prussian helmet” spire, unique in this area. The two altars are in Baroque style. It dates back to 1463 and is in Gothic style. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows was added around 1797. Winter activities in the Tarvisiano P i e t r o Summer activities in the Tarvisiano Winter activities in the Tarvisiano Vallo e di Ug n oviz Summer activities in the Tarvisiano Parish Church of St. Peter and St. Paul - Tarvisio Church of the Blessed Virgin of Loreto - Tarvisio St. Dorothy’s Church Camporosso It dates back to 1445 and is one of the most interesting examples of fortified church in the Alps: it is surrounded by a wall erected as a defence against the Turkish invasions (1474), reinforced by four fifteenth-century towers. The wide central nave is in Gothic style, the two side chapels in Baroque style. There are frescoes depicting Emperor Charles V on horseback, Jesus and the children, the Last Judgement. It dates back to 1688, the recent restoration has brought to light many frescoes probably by artists of the German school. There are precious paintings of around 1520 and two canvases of the end of the 17th century, copies by Lucio Candido of the doors of the organ of Venzone painted by Gian Antonio De Sacchis called “Il Pordenone”. The largest of the three wooden altars features the statue of the Black Madonna with the Blessing Child. In Gothic-Carinthian style, it stands on a rock spur. The year of its foundation may be 1007 or 1017. The altar in polychrome marbles is of 1700. Some cleaning tests, carried out on the walls of the hall and of the apse that were white plastered, have revealed the presence of one or more layers of 15th-century frescoes of fine workmanship, some well preserved, others, unfortunately, rather damaged. St. Mary Major’s Parish Church Pontebba St. Nicholas’ Church Coccau Church of Mary and of St. Anthony Malborghetto Of small size until the 12th century, it was reconstructed in Gothic style in 1504. The high altar features a Flügelaltar (polyptych), a precious late Gothic wooden altar of 1517, probably by Master Heinrich from Villach, made up of a central body with two mobile doors. The sculptures in the central scene depict the crowning of Mary in Heaven. The left door features the Nativity and the Resurrection, the right one the Adoration of the Magi and Mary’s death. A fourteenth-century fortress church, it was equipped with loopholes for the defence from inside, one of which is still visible. It preserves the most beautiful cycle of frescoes in Valcanale, dating back to the 14th century, some of which have been wonderfully renovated, such as a large fragment of the Last Supper. The portal on the southern side is of the ancient 13th-century church. Today’s building probably dates back to the 15th century. The church was born out of the joining of two buildings: a sixteenth-century building and the eighteenthcentury St. John’s church. During the restoration work of 1985, some 15th-century frescoes were brought to light. St. Bartholomew’s Church Chiusaforte Of Venetian school, it features a Way of the Cross dating back to 1619 and 18th-century paintings by an anonymous artist.
