Inaugurata nel mese di maggio 2013, la Robert F.
Kennedy International House of Human Rights del
Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights
Europe non è una struttura ricettiva qualunque.
Carcere fino al 1985, oggi è un luogo per corsi di
formazione per attivisti che ogni giorno si battono per
proteggere in tutto il mondo quei diritti fondamentali
che dovrebbero essere alla base di ogni essere umano.
The Robert F. Kennedy International House of Human
Rights of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and
Human Rights Europe, opened in May 2013. It is situated
in Florence, Italy, and is a ‘one-of-a-kind’ accommodation
and reception center.
A prison until 1985, today it is a haven for human rights
defenders who, day after day, fight to safeguard fundamental
human rights across the world.
La struttura è uno spazio ideale per eventi, mostre,
seminari, incontri di lavoro, conferenze e proiezioni
cinematografiche.
La Robert F. Kennedy International House è dotata di 12
stanze da letto, una sala per esposizioni e conferenze
(Sala delle Colonne Ottagonali), una sala per corsi di
formazione dotata di una TelePresence Cisco (Sala degli
Archi), una piccola Biblioteca utilizzabile anche per
presentazioni e corsi, sale comuni, cucina attrezzata,
sala da pranzo e spazi esterni per eventi e proiezioni
cinematografiche.
There is a space for events, exhibitions, seminars, business
meetings, conferences and film screenings.
The RFK International House offers 12 rooms for overnight
guests. There is also an exhibition room (Sala delle Colonne
Ottagonali), a training room complete with a CISCO
TelePresence videoconference system (Sala degli Archi), a
small library, a fully equipped kitchen and dining room and
an outdoor space for events and film screenings.
The RFK International House is equipped with a wireless
Internet system and features a laundry service, breakfast,
and daily cleaning upon request.
La RFK International House è dotata di una connessione
wi-fi a banda larga, una lavanderia, servizio colazione e
pulizia giornaliera su richiesta.

LOCATION
Situata nel cuore di Firenze, la struttura sorge
all’interno de “Le Murate”, complesso architettonico
edificato a partire dal 1424 per ospitare monache di
clausura, per questo chiamate "Murate", poi adibito a
carcere cittadino dal 1845 al 1985.
The “House “ is situated in the heart of the city of Florence,
within the premises of the former prison “Le Murate”.
The construction of the architectural compound began in
1424 to host an order of cloistered nuns –hence, the name ‘Le
Murate’, which literally means ‘walled-in’. Subsequently,
from 1845 to 1985 ‘Le Murate’ became the city’s prison.
Alla fine degli anni Novanta, il celebre architetto Renzo
Piano, ha fornito le linee guida per trasformare "Le
Murate" in uno spazio culturale e ricreativo dove
accogliere ONG, start-up, alloggi pubblici, negozi,
ristoranti, bar e sale conferenze per la cittadinanza.
L’ambizioso progetto, portato avanti dal Comune di
Firenze,
ha visto il suo completamento con
l’inaugurazione nel 2004 e la restituzione alla città di
uno spazio di grande valore.
By the end of the 90s, the famous architect Renzo Piano,
provided the guidelines to transform ‘Le Murate’ into a
cultural and recreational space, to host NGOs, start-ups,
public housing, shops, restaurants, coffee shops and
conference rooms, open to all citizens. This was a truly
ambitious project which was supported by the Municipal
Administration of Florence and was officially opened in
2004, thus relocating these valuable premises.
Il contesto in cui sorge rende dunque la RFK
International House un luogo unico altamente
simbolico, trasformato e riconvertito da spazio di dolore
e sofferenza a centro internazionale per la difesa dei
diritti e della dignità di tutti gli esseri umani.
The RFK International House, is therefore hosted in a
unique building, a location with a highly symbolic
connotation, transformed and converted from a place of
suffering and sorrow to an international center for the
defense of human rights and dignity.

ROOMS
La Robert F. Kennedy International House of Human
Rights é dotata di 12 camere articolate su due piani, di
cui 11 ad uso doppia (2 per disabili) ed 1 singola, ognuna
con bagno privato e connessione internet gratuita, wi-fi
e via cavo.

The Robert F. Kennedy International House for Human
Rights has 12 rooms, equipped with a private bathroom,
located on two separate floors. 11 rooms have been designed for
the occupancy of two people and the other is a single-occupancy
room. Each room features free internet access, Wi-Fi and Lan.

Un ampio e luminoso salotto, dove poter leggere,
guardare la tv dotata di dvd player, lavorare al pc,
organizzare riunioni o incontrarsi con gli altri
ospiti.
A large and bright living room, where our guests can
read, watch tv or a dvd, work on their electronic devices,
organize meetings, or meet with other guests.

La biblioteca, intitolata alla memoria di Riccardo Garrone, contiene, ad oggi, più di 500 volumi e si propone di
raccogliere risorse cartacee ed elettroniche relative alle aree d’azione e di interesse del Robert F. Kennedy Center Europe
(didattica sui Diritti Umani, storia della Famiglia Kennedy e del Movimento per i Diritti Civili, Attivismo digitale). E’
iscritta allo SDIAF (Sistema Documentario Integrato dell’Area Fiorentina), che riunisce le Biblioteche, gli Archivi e
molte Istituzioni culturali cittadine e tramite il quale si può avere accesso a più di un milione e settecentomila record e
richiedere prestiti interbibliotecari. Gli attivisti e gli ospiti della RFK International House potranno inoltre accedere alla
Biblioteca del Polo delle Scienze Sociali dell’Università di Firenze, consultare banche dati e risorse elettroniche e ivi
ottenere assistenza alla ricerca mentre sarà possibile per tutti gli utenti, iscriversi al sistema eLibrary USA
dell’Information Resource Center dell’Ambasciata degli Stati Uniti a Roma.

The library, so named in the memory of Riccardo Garrone, contains approximately 500 volumes and aims to collect more
electronic and print resources in subjects related to the activities of the Robert F. Kennedy Center Europe (Human Rights
education, the story of the Kennedy family and the Civil Rights movement and Digital Activism.
The library is registered with the SDIAF system, the online integrated documentary system of the City of Florence. The database
gathers resources from other libraries, historical archives, and universities, and makes them available for all users. Through the
SDIAF system, users may have access via interlibrary loans to more than one million seven hundred thousand resources.
Activists and guests of the RFK International House will have access to the Library of Social Sciences Campus at the University
of Florence, consult databases and electronic resources, receive research assistance and sign up for eLibrary USA, a database from
the Information Resource Center of the U.S. Embassy to Rome.

“LOGGIA”
La corte interna di 230 mq, situata al pian terreno, si
presenta come luogo ottimale per ospitare eventi,
cocktails, spettacoli e presentazioni. Per accedervi si
attraversa un porticato caratterizzato da un soffitto con
travi in legno e da archi supportati da colonne, sotto il
quale è possibile allestire mostre ed esibizioni esterne.
Lo spazio è inoltre dotato di un Wi-Fi hotspot.
La loggia è uno spazio aperto di 80 mq, situato al primo
piano del Robert F. Kennedy Center Europe, e utilizzato
dagli ospiti dell'International House of Human Rights
come spazio comune per momenti di relax o come area
per allestimento di catering durante gli eventi. È una
terrazza caratterizzata da colonne in muratura rivolte
verso la corte interna che sorreggono il soffitto di travi in
legno. Anche la loggia è dotata di un Wi-Fi hotspot.
The 230- sq.m. internal Courtyard is situated on the ground
floor. It is the perfect location for events, cocktails,
performances and exhibitions or book-launches. It is
adjacent to a portico with a wooden-beamed ceiling
supported by columns, which is ideal for outdoor exhibition
installations. The space is equipped with a Wi-Fi hotspot.
Loggia is an 80-sq. m. outdoor space, situated on the first
floor of the Robert F. Kennedy Center Europe. It may used by
the guests of the International House of Human Rights as a
common space to relax, or may be equipped as a catering
area during events. It is a terrace, overlooking the internal
Courtyard, with masonry columns which support a
wooden-beams ceiling. The loggia is equipped with a Wi-Fi
hotspot.

“SALA DELLE COLONNE
OTTAGONALI”

Al piano terra si trova un ampio salone di 125 mq con
una capienza massima di 99 persone. Al centro della
sala sei colonne ottagonali dell'Ottocento sostengono un
soffitto di legno a cassettoni e alle pareti sono presenti
10 pannelli espositivi di varie dimensioni funzionali per
l’allestimento di mostre.
This 125-sq.m. room is located on the ground floor and has a
maximum occupancy of 99 people. Spaced across the hall,
there are six 19th century octagonal columns supporting a
wooden-panelled ceiling. Ten functional exhibition panels of
varying sizes are set on the walls to display paintings or
photo exhibits.
La sala è munita di due servizi igienici di cui uno per
disabili ed è inoltre dotata di due Wi-Fi hotspot, sistema
di climatizzazione aria calda/fredda, impianto di
allarme, sensori anti intrusione,servizio di videosorveglianza con registrazione 24 ore su 24.
The room is equipped with two bathrooms – one handicap
friendly - is outfitted with a wireless access point router and
a heating and air conditioning unit. Furthermore, there is
an alarm system, with motion sensors and 24 hours/day
video surveillance.
La sala si trova al piano terra, di fronte alla Sala delle
Colonne Ottagonali. È uno spazio di 55 mq che può
ospitare fino ad un massimo di 25 persone. Luogo ideale
per incontri d'affari, presentazioni, seminari e corsi di
formazione.
La sala è l’unica sede italiana ad ospitare il “Dialogue
Cafè”, il primo network di sale per videoconferenze
pubbliche destinato esclusivamente alla società civile,
che permette di condividere esperienze, idee, progetti di
area sociale, educativa, culturale attraverso la
collaborazione tra fondazioni, associazioni, ONG,
università e scuole, imprese sociali, agenzie e enti del
settore pubblico.
Nella sala è presente un sistema "TelePresence” Cisco
che garantisce una comunicazione “faccia a faccia”, con
audio e video in altissima definizione oltre a un hotspot
Wi-Fi e sistema di climatizzazione aria calda/fredda.
La sala è dotata di impianto di allarme, sensori anti
intrusione e videosorveglianza con registrazione 24 ore
su 24.

This 55-sq.m.room is on the ground floor, opposite of the Sala
delle Colonne Ottagonal. With a maximum occupancy of 25
people, the room is ideal for business meetings or training
courses. The Sala degli Archi hosts the only Italian
“Dialogue Cafè” –the first public video-conferencing network
exclusively targeting the civil society with the purpose of
enabling the exchange of experiences, ideas, and cultural,
educational or social projects. The network is available for
the use of foundations, associations, NGOs, university
institutions, schools, social enterprises, public bodies and
stakeholders.
Sponsored worldwide by Cisco Systems, the “Dialogue Cafè”
utilizes the innovative “TelePresence” technology which
guarantees a “face-to-face” communication with
high-definition audio and video. It serves as a bridge between
local communities from across the world, aiming to improve
understanding between different cultures and societies and
promoting development.

di 20 Gbps ed è interconnessa con le altre Reti della Ricerca europee e mondiali. Negli spazi interni è disposto il sistema
di riscaldamento/aria condizionata.
All premises are a ‘non-smoking area’; central heating and
air conditioning are provided indoors. Free high-speed
wi-fi is offered by GARR, the Italian Academic and
Research telecommunication network for University
and Scientific Research. Its main goal is to provide
high-bandwidth connectivity and advanced services to the
national scientific and academic community. The GARR
network has a maximun capacity of 20 Gbps and is fully
integrated into the worldwide Internet.
