OTHER PROJECTS Zerilli-Marimò Prize for Italian Fiction Established in 1998; organized yearly since then. Awarded annually by an American 95-member jury to a new Italian work of fiction deemed especially worthy of the attention of readers in the United States. The prize consists of a grant of $3,000 to the author of the winning work and a contribution of $10,000 toward its translation and publication in the United States. Steerforth Press has agreed to publish the winning novels as part of their Steerforth Italia series. The Bellonci Foundation of Rome—responsible for Italy's prestigious Premio Strega—, the Casa delle Letterature of the City of Rome, and New York University jointly organize the competition. Winners of the prize include authors Gianni Celati, Roberto Pazzi, Giorgio van Straten, Silvia Bonucci, Marcello Fois, Alessandra Lavagnino. Understanding Italy with the “Rivista dei libri” A collaborative agreement with the Rivista dei Libri and the New York Review of Books. Free subscription to the Italian journal La Rivista dei Libri have been offered to all interested American and Canadian programs in Italian studies and to selected Italian departments in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. Almost two hundred programs have received monthly the Rivista during the academic year 20032004 and will continue to receive it in 2004-2005. Tiro a Segno Fellowship in Italian-American Culture Fund raising: 1999-2000. Established: 2001 In 2000 the Department of Italian Studies received a $500,000 gift from Tiro a Segno Foundation to establish a Visiting Faculty Fellowship in Italian-American Culture. The Tiro a Segno position is intended to be multidisciplinary in its scope. The fellows are selected from a broad array of disciplines and collaborate with various NYU departments and scholars. The responsibilities of the Tiro a Segno visiting faculty fellows include teaching both graduate and undergraduate courses on the experience and contributions of Italian immigrants and Italian-Americans to American culture and society. The content of the courses ranges from sociology of immigration to anthropology of ethnic identity, to ItalianAmerican achievements in literature and in the visual and performing arts. Exchange Program with the University of Rome “La Sapienza” 1997-2001 Each year one NYU graduate student received a grant by the University of Rome to spend one or two semesters there.
