Infanzia in Manciuria, poi (1905) Inghilterra, di nuovo in Manciuria (1909-1910). Studi secondari
nel Cheltenham College. Nel 1916 entra al New College di Oxford, ma inizia a frequentare solo nel
1919 (dal 1916 al 1917 viaggia in Cina e Russia, dal 1917 al 1919 milita nella Royal Field Artillery
in Francia). Allievo di Gilbert Murray e A. H. Smith. Nel 1922 diviene 'Classical Tutor' e 'Fellow'
nel Wadham College; poi, conseguito il grado di 'Doctor of Letters' nel 1937, dal 1938 al 1970,
'Warden' nello stesso College (l'incarico viene prolungato onorificamente oltre il settantesimo anno
d'età). Dal 1946 al 1951 tiene la 'Oxford Chair of Poetry'. Dal 1951 al 1954 è 'Vice-Chancellor'
dell'Università di Oxford. 'Visiting Professor' ad Harvard (1936-1937); 'Charles Eliot Norton
Professor' sempre ad Harvard (1948-1949). Martin Lectures, Oberlin College, Ohio (1938); Earl
