Applica le regole, nomenclatura e codici (morfologia, topografia
e comportamento) dell’ICD-O-3.
Le categorie sono definite in conformità con le classificazioni
internazionali di patologia e genetica dei tumori, in particolare
con la serie della Classificazione Istologica Internazionale dei
Tumori dell’OMS, i cosiddetti Blue Books.
Anche se inserisce nuovi concetti di istogenesi tumorale,
garantisce la continuità con le precedenti classificazioni.
Sono stati sviluppati 3 livelli di classificazione gerarchica: il
Livello 1 (12 gruppi diagnostici principali) e il Livello 2 (47 sotto
gruppi diagnostici) comprende la tabella di classificazione
principale. Il Livello 3 è un’estensione opzionale della
classificazione.
Sono classificati in ICCC-3 solo i tumori con comportamento
maligno, con l’eccezione dei tumori endocranici e endorachidei.

classificazione internazionale è
particolarmente importante nel
campo dell’oncologia pediatrica, in
cui la bassa frequenza di casi
richiede procedure rigorose per
garantire la comparabilità dei dati.
