THE AZIMUT YACHTS MAGAZINE
d’Italia. Una fortunata combinazione, che ci fa ancora
più piacere.
This is a grand moment for our Group. I’m making a
bit of a pun here, because last season we created and
organised the Azimut Grande Collection, which groups
together such prestigious, highly successful boats as the
Azimut 103SL, the 105, the 116, and the new 120SL.
Today, we welcome to Grande Collection fold the first
member of a new generation: the Azimut Grande 100,
featuring a rise pilot house, that we will very likely
introduce in Genoa, and we’re infinitely proud of it.
Grande 100 is grand in its lineage and breeding. In
actuality, it sprung from the pencil of Stefano Righini,
from our designers, and from consultants on Grande,
customisable Benetti yachts. A powerful synergy that
brings together the best of our brands and our energies
in order to offer boat owners the maximum expression
of Made In Italy.
A company that works, that continues to produce
innovations, that takes on challenges and surmounts
them, that navigates its way unscathed through the
billows of world crises because it never stopped investing
in product growth, a company in which all divisions
work together in a cohesive manner for a common
purpose, that produces richness and beauty. All of this
is Grande, A grand moment for the Azimut-Benetti
Group that moreover is realised as we celebrate the 150th
anniversary of Italy’s Unification. A lucky combination
that bring us even more pleasure.
barche oltre i 30 metri, a marchio Azimut Grande e Benetti.
modulabile in 4 diverse configurazioni.
Inviti in
At a time of great change, Azimut-Benetti Group is taking
a fresh look at its range, organising its products into two
Business Lines: “Yacht” comprises all the boats up to 30 metres
and therefore boats in the Azimut Yachts and Atlantis range,
and “Megayachts” is the line with boats over 30 metres, under
the Azimut Grande and Benetti brands.
We are also updating our products: in a few months, Azimut
Grande 100 will be presented to the world. Before that, we
shall be launching the Azimut 45, a boat which, in addition
to the consolidated elegance, quality and comfort of Azimut,
adds elements of convertibility, a characteristic which is
increasing in direct proportion to our expansion in countries
like China, India and Brazil, where boats are used differently
compared to Europe, consequently also our products must be
easily convertible. The Azimut 45 perfectly interprets this new
requirement, with the option of two or three cabins which, on
board a 13 metre yacht, is practically unheard-of and with a
flybridge that can be set to 4 different configurations.
We are also introducing changes to the company-customer
relationship, aiming to make it closer and more direct.
Invitations to the shipyard, one-to-one communication, greater
presence and shipowner assistance are some of the areas we are
currently working on to provide improved shipowner support.
I like to think that all these changes are only a beginning
and that this continuous effort to improve ourselves and our
products is part of an ongoing process.
The suggestions, criticisms and - when due - also the compliments
of our shipowners are the most precious help we can receive.

fuori dalle rotte tradizionali.
assolutamente intenzionata a ripetere l’esperienza l’anno
prossimo: stesse date e stessa location. E sempre con lo
stesso obiettivo: esplorare nuovi contatti e consolidare i
all’altezza della situazione”.
The author is Luigi Gambelli, a veritable volcano
of ideas in permanent eruption and Azimut Yachts
dealer for Central Northeast Italy. During the times
of the year perhaps less suited to entertaining owners
and new customers at sea, he thought to bring the sea
to his customers, who were skiing during those times
in the Brenta Dolomites. From last December 8th to
January 15th, Timone Yachts indeed opened a branch in
Madonna di Campiglio. A successful initiative, starting
with the choice of location: the gallery “Campiglio Arte”
in the centrally located Piazza Righi. A co-marketing
that has never been more pleasurable: in his new offices,
the Azimut dealer greeted guests ranging from the most
devoted boat owners to customers of the art gallery to
new admirers coming from every region of Italy, all
intrigued by a boat dealer outside traditional waters.
It was a total hit, and Timone Yachts is absolutely
determined to repeat the experience next year: same
place, same time. And always with the same objective:
exploring new contacts and cementing relations with
long-term customers thanks to a service that is always
more efficient and “We plan to act not just as a simple
services provider but as a meeting place for friendly
purposes,” says Gambelli. “During the summer, we join
our customers on a cruise along the Croatian coasts,
and when there’s snow on the mountains, we talk about
boating. We never stop offering advice and products even
in the highest situations.”

vodě” (letteralmente “barche in acqua”) salone nautico

“Vltava” o “Moldava”.

occasione dell’Hainan Rendez Vous (1-4 aprile 2011).
Adiacente allo stand Azimut,
come a voler concentrare il meglio del made in Italy, era
presente l’esposizione Ferrari.
Thinking big always produces big results. This is probably
the most correct interpretation of the success of Azimut
Yachts at the Hainan Rendez-Vous (1-4 April 2011).
Firstly, a brief presentation of this event which has built
on the success it obtained last year. The exclusive island
of Hainan, with its magnificent sea and Mediterranean
climate, only a few miles from the coast of mainland
China, is the venue for a show that concentrates the best
of world luxury, to the delight of the increasing number
of Chinese operators and buyers, among others. The expo
was held in two main locations: the airport, where the
best of the world aeronautical industry was on show, and
the marina which, in addition to the yachts, also featured
fashion brands, jewellery, automotive and other sectors
of the luxury industry. Next to the Azimut stand was
Ferrari, as if a deliberate attempt had been made to focus
attention on the best of Made in Italy.
The Azimut stand was large, structured, elegant and
provided with all comforts, including air conditioning,
essential at this time of the year, a fact that did not escape
the notice of the local buyers who flocked in at the expense
of the competitors. This, together with the fact that the
Azimut stand was the richest and most varied at the show
– it exhibited a 40S, a 58, an 70, a 100 Leonardo and an
Azimut 105, representing the Azimut Grande collection –
resulted in a wealth of orders: 5 boats sold totalling 333
feet.
The large number of boats exhibited compared to its
competitors (another 85 feet Azimut yacht had been
made available by its owner but was unable to enter the
marina due to lack of space) testifies to the quality of
the relations established by Azimut Yachts with the local
shipowners and dealers, including Simpson Marine,

NEL CORSO DELLA PRIMA INTERVISTA A NAUTILUX,
DALLA NOMINA AVVENUTA A GENNAIO, IL NUOVO AMMINISTRATORE DELEGATO
AZIMUT YACHTS ESPONE I SUOI OBIETTIVI.
IN HIS FIRST INTERVIEW WITH NAUTILUX
SINCE BEING APPOINTED IN JANUARY, THE NEW AZIMUT YACHTS CEO
LAYS OUT HIS AGENDA.

Motivi commerciali?
No, di comunicazione.
Vogliamo dare informazioni
e servizi e vogliamo ricevere suggerimenti e lamentele.
geografica, dobbiamo ricevere input precisi e richieste
nuove.
Commercial reasons?
No, for reasons of communication. The commercial
relationship is the province of the dealer. We want owners
to feel that they’re a part of our structure, our organisation.
The dealer has to be on the side of the customer – with its
service, with after-sale. The company has to be on the side of
the owner – with an institutional presence and dialogue that
runs in both directions. We want to provide information and
services, and we want to receive suggestions and complaints.
Yes, even complaints, because while compliments are nice,
they don’t help us to get better at what we do. Criticism, on
the other hand, harsh though it may be, constitutes the best
motivation for doing a better job. An interactive, on-going
relationship with the customer is also indispensable when
it comes to making accurate predictions about the future.
We’ve always been at the forefront with our yachts, and
we want to stay that way. Today, with the market having
undergone a complete geographical shift in just a few short
years, we need to get precise input and new requests.
vorremmo attuare noi. Vorremmo che il cliente si sentisse
parte dell’azienda. Certo dobbiamo meritarcelo e per
arrivare a questo dobbiamo lavorare tutti molto. Noi e i
dealer.
Are we talking about an action aimed at loyalty?
Loyalty is one objective, but we’d like to accomplish more:
we’d like to have the customer feel that he’s a part of the
company. Of course we have to earn this, and we all have
to work hard to get there. All of us, including the dealers.
I dealer
Graficamente
grandi clienti.
INTERVIEW
Mr Casani, just before our meeting, you alluded to
how Azimut needs to prioritise the forging of closer
relationships with its customers.
That is a fact. Azimut needs to reduce the distance between
the company and its customers. Right now, the dealer is the
interface in the relationship between company and boat
owner. If the relationship were depicted as a straight line, the
customer and Azimut would be at the two opposite ends, with
the dealer in the middle. We’re looking to turn this line into
a triangle. While the dealer would still remain the star, the
indispensable lynchpin in the dialogue between company and
customer, the latter two would have a direct relationship and
be in close contact with each other, which is the way it should
be with a leading producer and distinguished customers.
Chi visita i nostri cantieri
ne ricava un’impressione più che positiva. Abbiamo allo
Ero a cena qualche
vicissitudini, perché il vostro uomo dell’after sale
15
Might the dealers view this as a redefining of their role?
But why should they? They always have the main relationship
with the customer. Azimut complements or, better, stands
alongside the dealers; it is not a substitute for them. The
dealers play a crucial role, and they constitute a business
model that is ideal for our company. It’s no coincidence that
we can lay claim to having the world’s most extensive dealer
network. When the customer feels more aligned with the
brand and its values, the dealers can only stand to benefit.
Specifically, what are you planning to do?
We’re launching a number of projects. One of the first that we
will implement provides for customer visits at the Avigliana
boatyard. I believe that an owner would be glad to be
invited by the president or CEO to visit the company and the
production chain where his boat is being built. Owners who
have already paid a visit to the boatyard come away feeling
quite pleased at having toured a company they never would
have imagined – a company with this type of organisation,
with this type of structure, and of this size. Visitors to our
boatyards gain a very favourable impression. We’re studying
dozens of other initiatives, many of which are described in the
Letter from the CEO that accompanies each issue of Nautilux.
All of these efforts serve to develop customer loyalty.
The other objectives?
Let’s talk about products and services. A few weeks ago,
I was having dinner with three American customers. One
of them said to me, “Despite some ups and downs, I’m
still an Azimut customer because your American aftersale guy is fantastic. I had to leave for a weekend with
my family, and my boat had broken down. I called him
at 6 in the morning. Twenty minutes later, he was on the
dock. He found me a replacement boat, which allowed me
to go out my weekend. And when I got back, I found my

sei del mattino. Quello, dopo venti minuti era in banchina,

boat repaired and ready to go. That’s a sign of tremendous
efficiency, of fantastic service. I’ll never leave Azimut as
long as that guy’s still there”.
Now I’m certainly not pleased to learn that this owner’s
boat had broken down, but I do enjoy telling about the
problem experienced by one of my boats and being able
to brag about how it was solved. Do you know why?
Something bad happened, but the company was there. In
general, as soon as something happens, the company has
to get to the bottom of it, has to be present, has to be there..
I’d like to take the commendable initiative shown by
this after-sale man of ours and make it the standard for
company conduct.
What’s the status of the array of services?
It’s complete. The services division of the Azimut-Benetti

ONCE THE MARKET STABILISES, THE RIGHT PLAYERS THAT HAVE
THE RIGHT ORGANISATIONS WILL REAP THE REWARDS.
lounge a Viareggio, una show room all’interno della quale
accogliamo i clienti e li aiutiamo a costruirsi l’interior
decoration della barca. Apriremo un secondo salone,
sempre a Viareggio e sarà prevalentemente dedicato a
nostre barche.
questi mercati. I cinesi, per esempio, hanno una cultura
Group is called Yachtique. It was formed three years ago as
the result of an idea by our president. During my first three
years at Azimut, it was my job to set it up, organise it, and
run it. Yachtique offers every type of service associated with
boating: from refitting to charter services; from marina
management to interior customisation, which is performed
by a styling lounge in Viareggio, inside whose showroom
we welcome customers and help them to build the boat’s
interior decoration. We’ll be opening a second showroom,
also in Viareggio, which will be dedicated primarily to
Benetti and Azimut Grande.
Among the most important services are those relating
to yacht financing. Two years ago, we entered into an
arrangement with Societé Generale that allows us to offer
financing to owners for the purchase of their boats. It is
a tool that turned out to be particularly strategic during
the years of the financial crisis, when it helped to finance
about 20% of the Group’s total business.
What about product?
I’d like to focus on the aspects of flexibility and convertibility
that we’re introducing on board our boats. Convertibility
today is not merely a plus but rather a necessity, since
Azimut is turning more and more to markets outside of
Europe. I’m talking about the Americas, China, India,
Southeast Asia. Obviously, the culture and lifestyles in
those countries are different from ours. And, of course,
there are differences between them as well. Therefore, the
more convertible the boat’s interior layout, the better it can
be adapted to suit the needs of these markets. For example,
the Chinese have a sailing culture that is very different from
ours. For them, the main purpose of yachting is socialising.
The boat stays moored and is used to entertain friends, to
host business meetings, and for socialising and creating a
space for leisure time. We often get requests for large spaces
for karaoke. More and more customers are eliminating the
dining area on the deck, since the saloon needs to be as
large as possible for hosting more people at the same time.
We’re in a position to meet these trends, both with our
design mind-set and our products.
The new 45, for example, already embodies these needs.
It’s certainly a plus that the flybridge can be converted
quickly, but the fact that the boat is offered in versions
featuring two or three cabins is even more important. The
element of flexibility obviates the need to push for a boat
with specific sizes. It gives the customer a way to shape the
boat to his liking.
Siamo tornati ai livelli economici ante 2008?
Ancora no, ma certamente,
mondo. Oggi alcune di queste
concentrazioni si spostano. Ci
sono dei paesi che 3 o 4 anni fa
non avremmo mai immaginato
che avrebbero acquistato barche;
invece stanno diventano giorno
maggiormente i player giusti
che hanno le organizzazioni
giuste.
Have we returned to pre-2008 economic levels?
Not yet, but when we get back
there, the make-up of our turnover
will certainly look quite different.
We have to be prepared to build
boats for the whole world, a fact
that distinguishes the current
situation from the prior one.
Certainly we were an international
company back then, but with large
concentrations in specific world
regions. Today, some of these
concentrations are shifting. There
are countries that, three or four
years ago, we never would have
imagined would be interested in
buying our boats; but now, the
number of potential buyers there
is growing day by day.
The difficulties in returning quickly
to those prior economic levels also
lie in the greater attention being
paid by credit institutions when
it comes to providing loans and
lease financing. Once the market
stabilises, the right players that
have the right organisations will
reap the rewards. During the
boom years, boatyards popped up
all over, and they were the first to
disappear. The market of tomorrow will likely be smaller than
that during the early 2000s, but our share will be larger than it
was in the past. We’ll be more of a leader than before.
raggiungerli. Non perché glielo dice qualcuno, ma perché
lo sentono. Con uomini così raggiungere tutti gli altri
obiettivi è automatico.
Direct relations with the customer, services, attention to
new markets and products. Anything else?
We can’t overlook human resources. We’re focusing more
and more on the quality of the people who work at the
company. Men and women who take on the project with
passion, who love their work and take satisfaction from
it, who devote themselves to the objectives and do all
they can to achieve them. And not because someone
tells them to do it, but because it’s a calling that comes
from within. With people like this, reaching all the other
objectives is a given.

DESIGN ED ELEGANZA SONO I VALORI PIÙ IMPORTANTI, MA PER
ACCONTENTARE I NUOVI ARMATORI, OGGI UNO YACHT DEVE OFFRIRE DI PIÙ.
DESIGN AND ELEGANCE ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT VALUES, BUT IN ORDER
TO PLEASE NEW OWNERS, A YACHT TODAY HAS TO OFFER MORE.

semplice.
19
Everything that held true yesterday still holds true today:
you choose a yacht based on how it meets the eye, for if it’s
true that you can appreciate a yacht that is not beautiful
due to other qualities, it’s certainly true that you fall in
love only with boats that caress you with their gaze.
According to most boat owners, beauty and design thus
continue to be the values that are adjudged first, followed
by comfort, performance, security, prestige, and reliability.
Today, however, these values are accompanied by an
important new discriminating factor: boat owners in 2011
no longer want to have to choose between various options.
They want everything. When asked to choose between a
third cabin and a sitting room, for example, the response
is often: “Both”.
More generally, requests are directed at the augmenting of
facilities and the number of spaces while maintaining hull
size and lightness, in order to improve speed and ease of
manoeuvrability and enable nimble, safe navigation. All
of this without giving up one centimetre of space.
A nearly impossible challenge, but designers explain that
this work involves managing time and space. Something
that at one moment is a pouffe becomes a small table at
another, to give a simple example.

COME QUELLA DEL DIRETTORE DI UN ALBERGO A 5 STELLE,
LA PROFESSIONALITÀ DELLA CHIEF STEWARDESS È IMPORTANTISSIMA.
SPESSO DA LEI DIPENDE IL SUCCESSO DELL’INTERA STAGIONE.
JUST AS WITH THE DIRECTOR OF A 5-STAR HOTEL,
THE PROFESSIONALISM OF A CHIEF STEWARDESS IS VITAL. OFTEN,
THE SUCCESS OF THE ENTIRE SEASON HINGES ON HER.
24
specchiandosi negli acciai o negli ottoni, scendere in
relax servita in guanti bianchi... Questi e mille altri piaceri
chief stewardess deve saper motivare,
dirigere, incentivare, insegnare e
correggere. Il tutto con il tatto e
la forza richiesti dal particolare
ambiente in cui si svolge l’attività
lavorativa.
Tutto bene, ma dove trovare una
professionista di questo livello? E
poi, come sceglierla? Cosa valutare?
Intanto non è detto che a sceglierla
debba essere il comandante. Capita
tantissime chief stewardess italiane” dice Alessandro
The skipper may get the credit for choosing her, but she can
take credit for everything else. The chief stewardess can
make the difference between an ordinary season and an
outstanding one. Come aboard and adjust your foulard in
the steel or brass fittings; go below to your cabin and find
fresh flowers on the bedside table – white for her, assorted
for him; turn over on the sun pad and magically find the
bottle of sunscreen in easy reach; eagerly look forward to
lunchtime – not just for the delicacies being prepared by the
cook but also to find a perfectly relaxed atmosphere and
white-glove service... These and thousands of other delights
of on-board life are not only made possible but also more
special thanks to the work of the chief stewardess.
The chief stewardess on a megayacht generally has at
least two other stewardesses working with her, and she
needs to establish a relationship with them that is highly
collaborative. The chief stewardess
has to know how to motivate, direct,
energise, teach, and make corrections
– all the while displaying the tact and
strength demanded by the specific
environment in which she’s working.
That’s all well and good, but where
can you find a professional with such
qualifications? How is she selected?
What needs to be evaluated?
To begin with, it’s not necessarily the
case that the skipper has to make
the choice. It often happens that
the owner, particularly a female owner, will arrange the
interviews, especially when the plan is to make the chief
stewardess his or her personal assistant.
In order to find her and make her an offer, owners often
turn to recruitment agencies, such as The Crew Network
owned by Fraser Yachts, a world leader in this area. The
agencies evaluate candidates in accordance with the
requirements sought and the availability in the data base.
“Unfortunately, we don’t have very many Italian chief
stewardesses,” says Alessandro D’Angelo of Crew Network.
“Rather, it is a profession that’s highly developed in the
United Kingdom, which provides the majority of chief
stewardesses. Our stewardesses and chief stewardesses are
all selected from among young women who have worked on
two or three voyages and have attended important courses,
like the Silver Service, as well as courses for mise-en-place,
floral decoration, and sommelier”.
Even more: chief stewardesses must speak at least three
languages, need to be young and well groomed, but have to
be experienced – a mix of requirements that are not easily
reconciled and are in fact quite rare. This is evidence not

raro.
must.
PERSONS
only of the difficulty of the work, but also of the high value
accorded to the professionals who perform it.
While having a good, capable chief stewardess is a necessity
for the owner, it is a must for a boat that’s chartered. In
this case, on-board life need to be organised each week for
different guests; it may well be that some wish to eat at
one time and others at a different one, with tastes and
preferences with regard to the menu varying from group to
group. Beds may need to be made several times each day at
differing times, and bath towels for the pool may need to be
replaced throughout the day. It’s a lot of work and a lot of
trouble, but clients who lease a 50-metre boat expect 5-star
service. And they’re entitled to it. The chief stewardess’s
duty is to do all she can in order to satisfy this expectation

l’armatrice?
Dipende: in alcune barche è l’armatrice, in altre è
l’armatore.
Roberta, how important is the owner’s privacy?
Extremely important, but it’s not that hard to ensure it:
there are separate environments. The crew has its zone,
and the owner has the rest of the boat. There are separate
entrances as well. When carrying out your work tasks,
you never go through the interior of the boat, but always
around the outside. This is for reasons of privacy, as well as
to avoid staining the carpets if you should drop something.
Based on your experience with owners, does the chief
stewardess interact more with the husband or the wife?
It depends: on some boats, it’s the wife, and others it’s the
husband. But it also depends on the situation: it might be that
with the wife, I’ll discuss issues relating to how the boat is being
kept, because it always needs to be in order, always warm and
inviting. Clean, well that’s a given, but I’d also say polished.
And with the husband?
You’ll interact with the husband on, say, wine selection.
The cooks tell me what the menu will be, and then I go to
the husband to have him approve it and, if he does, to ask
him what wine pairings he’d like. The wine arrangements
suoi aromi. Talvolta quest’ultimo può anche essere versato
in un decanter per l’ossigenazione.
Chi serve a tavola?
Tutti i servizi a tavola vengono effettuati dalla chief
stewardess con l’aiuto di una stewardess. Si inizia servendo
contemporaneamente l’acqua, frizzante e naturale,
come semplice stewardess. Eravamo in 4: una chief e tre
ragazze.
metri.
will then be addressed: white wine will be chilled, and red
wine, particularly vintage bottles, will be opened ahead of
time and poured into a decanter to let it breathe.
Who serves the meals?
If the boat is small, I help out. If I have several stewardesses
at my disposal, I leave it to them. The meal begins with
one of them serving sparkling water and the other serving
still. I’m the only one who serves the wine. Then the meal
is served, either plated by the cook or in communal serving
dishes. In the latter case, clips are used.
How much of this comes from hotel-management school?
Hotel-management school can take five years. But there are also
Silver Service courses, which provide instruction in serving etiquette, the pairing of wine with
food, and the use of the various types of stemware. They
also offer refresher courses and
a complete overview of the
style of life on board, including
cultural aspects, which I like.
Even though I’m a non-smoker, I like knowing everything
about cigars, as well as about
the types of chocolate and rum.
They also teach you how to
mix cocktails for various kinds
of parties or prepare aperitifs,
and how do get the cabins
ready at night. How to create
floral arrangements, which,
depending on the vase and the
wife’s tastes, also need to be
kept spruced up. This is a very
important course in our field.
Una stewardess a bordo.
Your personal career?

boat in 1932. The owner liked A stewardess onboard.
me and brought me back the
following year. He even added a cabin in order to make it
possible for me to have an assistant stewardess. That was a
very satisfying moment for me: seeing my work recognised to
such an extent that it prompted the owner to modify the boat
in order to be able to give me an assistant. After four years on
that boat, I moved up to a bigger category, a 51-metre boat, as a
simple stewardess. There were four of us: a chef and three girls.
I agreed to start over again as a stewardess in order to gain
experience, since I’d never been on such a large boat before.
Then I moved on as chief stewardess of a 46-metre boat. As a
young girl, I’d wanted to go to boating school. Although I didn’t
get much encouragement from my parents, it seems that it was
indeed my calling, since I ended up at sea anyway.
Have you ever experienced any friction on board?
It can happen. If stewardesses need to be criticised, I use as
much tact as possible. I don’t like being aggressive, since
it has the reverse effect. We need to share quarters and
live together. I’m very calm, and by teaching rather than
criticising, I’m also able to achieve a better result. I believe
that the owners with whom I’ve worked have appreciated
this aspect of my character. I always strive to create a
familial atmosphere in the crew zone, since for the next six
or seven months, they’ll be my little family.

conclude l’operazione bancaria. Come dicevamo all’inizio,
owners. Conditions are flexible and
can be adapted to the needs of the
boat owner. The most interesting
features include the term, which on
a new boat can be as long as 15
years, and the currency, which for financing and leasing
can be either in Euros or US Dollars.
Yet the most distinctive feature of Yachtique Financial
Services is the attention paid to the customer: “It may
well be, and I am saying this against my interests as the
head of the Business Unit, that the financing available
for a particular customer, at a certain moment and under
certain conditions, may not be the most convenient, and
so we check to see if there are other, more favourable
alternatives for our customer. We provide consulting
services even if it doesn’t end in our providing the
financing. As we said in the beginning, what matters
most is that the customer is satisfied and purchases one
of our boats.”
Another initiative, still in the refinement phase and to be
launched soon, involves an exclusive concierge service:
a call centre in four languages, open 24 hours a day,
7 days a week, to give boat owners easy access to the
services that make life on board even more enjoyable from placing reservations for boat moorings, restaurants,
cars, nannies and catering; to organising trips; to
discounts on other business unit services offered by
Yachtique Elite Yachting Services (Refit Lusben, Marina
of Varazze, Showroom Styling Lounge); to preferential
rates on insurance and fuel thanks to a partnership with
a leading European petrol company. And all of these
benefits are, of course, available only to Azimut-Benetti
Group boat owners.

UN’ATTIVITÀ CHE VEDE L’ITALIA ALL’AVANGUARDIA.

WHEN IT COMES TO REFITTING, ITALY IS CUTTING EDGE.

Refitting.
privati a commerciali.
“Possibile?”
i giorni.
minimalista?
Refitting. Some may think this means a simple cleaning of
the keel. Others may take it all the way to mean changing the
enamel on the deckhouse. But if you want to talk seriously
about refitting, you need to view this activity broadly so as
to cover complete renovation of the boat, including major
interior modifications, total reupholstering of furniture,
and any adjustments and changes as may be necessary to
transform the yacht from private to commercial use.
“Possible?” This is what a new boat owner might ask
himself after just purchasing his first yacht while not yet
having discovered its full potential.
More than just possible, this is an activity that is carried
out every day. For the most advanced, state-of-the-art
boatyards, refitting possibilities are limitless, regardless of
the technique of construction. Boats can be lengthened and
widened, whether made of fibreglass, steel, aluminium, or
even wood.
Of course, this has to do with extremely precise wor-

“Viareggio e Livorno”, corregge Paolo Simoncini, direttore
a 130 metri. A Livorno abbiamo in funzione uno shifting
kmanship, and it requires highly skilled personnel as well
as a significant amount of time, which could be measured
in months or years, depending on the project.
Does furniture need to be replaced in order to suit the
owner’s tastes to the nth degree? Does a classic have to be
transformed into a minimalist? Do cabins have to grow
from 5 to 7? Are two pools needed where currently there
are none? No problem. A project is drawn up, and then it’s
carried out. Although the quality of the work ultimately
can’t be judged until it’s complete, it is possible to get a
sense of a boatyard’s abilities where focus is placed on
refitting before it even commences. Indeed, if the boatyard
is well organised and can flawlessly manage tight timelines
for the overhaul, it will be able to discontinue work just
in time for launching the boat at the start of the summer

REFITTING
Europa, abbiamo solo noi.
I nostri progettisti,

season and then recommence work and finish with the
refitting after the season ends.
One of the most important companies operating in the
Mediterranean is Lusben, in Viareggio.
“Actually, Viareggio and Livorno”, says Paolo Simoncini,
director of the division. “In Viareggio, we work on boats
up to 50 metres; in Livorno, we handle larger boats - from
50 to 130 metres. Our Livorno facility has a 2,500-tonne
shifting lift. We’re the only ones in the Mediterranean, and
possibly Europe, who have moving equipment of this size.
We also have a floating drydock for boats up to 180 metres
and roughly 15,000 tonnes, as well as a roughly 200-metre
graving dock”.
Lusben was founded in 1956 by Luschi and Benelli, who
were among the first to get involved in boat repairing. They
were quite rightly proud to be able to work on 25-metre
boats, having invented a technology for storing boats that
was ahead of its time - one of the world’s first watercraft
silos.
In 2000 Lusben was acquired by the Azimut-Benetti Group
and has become a hallmark of the after-sale service for
all of the Group’s boats, as well as others. In 2006 the
company resumed its refitting business, making significant
investments. Two years later, the brand garnered increased
visibility thanks to a marketing campaign that included a
new company image and a new website.
In Viareggio, a 60-metre spray booth allows a yacht’s
colour to be changed in short order, and in Livorno, plans
are in place to build a spray booth for boats of up to 80
metres. “We remodel used yachts the way others remodel
houses.” says Simoncini “If I move into a new home, at a
minimum I’m going to paint the walls. It’s the same thing
with boats. Those who can’t find just the right new model,
or who want to avoid paying the price for one, can opt
for a “preloved” boat and have the certainty of knowing
that it will correspond exactly to their wishes. While owners
definitely come to Lusben for the name and because they
know that we offer unique facilities, they’re also looking
for the exclusive expertise that comes with being builders
for Azimut and Benetti. In fact, our designers are the same
people who work for the Group”.
And as for the teams of craftsmen who carry out the work
on board, they too are the finest workers to be found along
this stretch of the Tuscan coast, ranging from Viareggio to
Livorno, which makes for unsurpassed refitting in Italy, if
not the world.

Ci
We speak of used yachts, but the Australians, who see the
world from a special vantage point, have coined the nice
term “preloved”, which lends itself perfectly to the definition
of boats that have changed owners. A euphemism? Maybe
not. It’s not inappropriate to compare the feelings that tie
an owner and his family to a boat with those of love and
affection. On a yacht, unforgettable moments are spent,
suspended between sea and sky; new friendships are
made and old ones cemented; loves are born and children
are raised outdoors in contact with nature. You have fun
and relax. During summer season outings, emotions are
gathered while on board that are capable of producing
benefits for the rest of the year. And it all starts up again
the following spring.

raccoglie e organizza l’usato ritirato dai dealer Azimut
Yachts.
L’acquisto dello yacht comincia sul sito. Si digita l’indirizzo
www.preloved-yachts.com e si apre velocemente la home

pratica.
specializzata in servizi nautici.

Preloved-yachts is the name chosen by the Azimut-Benetti
Group for the new organisation that gathers together and
organises used boats collected by Azimut Yachts dealers
around the world.
Purchase of the yacht starts at the website. Just type in
www.preloved-yachts.com, and you’ll quickly open the
home page, which avoids the use of acronyms and Flash
elements in order to make it even more practical. Prelovedyachts is an operational site, meaning that it has to be fast
and dynamic.
The search fields appear right on the home page: length of
boat, price range, age of boat.
After completing the research and evaluating the results,
the most interesting part begins, because this is when you
enter a world of services offered by the Yachtique division
of Azimut-Benetti and by Fraser Yachts, its company
specialising in nautical services.

Fabio Viale
a Fabio Viale.
Those who are familiar with boating can easily answer
Fabio Viale. His work of art “Ahgalla”, a boat carved of
Carrara marble from a five-tonne block that came from the
Polvaccio quarry near Michelangelo’s quarries, is not able
to plane, since keel and bow are not conceived to sail like
that. In addition, the 270-kg sculpture is too heavy for the
small, low-horsepower outboard engine with which it is
equipped. Taking five months to complete, Ahgalla got its
inaugural launch at the Port of Carrara, then sailed in the
Po in Venice, in the Milan dock, and finally in the Tiber,
crossing under the eternal bridges of Rome.
Fabio Viale is not a nautical designer but rather an artist
and a sculptor who has learned to resist the seduction of
installations in order to rediscover instead pure sculpture,
such as the plastic modelling of ideas and emotions. In
particular, he revived the use of marble, above all white
marble, the material of choice for Renaissance artists. But
in his hands, marble is stripped of everything reminiscent
of tradition and is transformed into a new material,
modern and dynamic, that has the capacity to assume its
precise position in a modern-day setting.
It is as if Viale’s marble has been liberated of its atomic

Neri, nuovi,
lucidi, con il battistrada ancora vergine. Costituiscono un
assurdo. Chiedono, anzi, pretendono attenzione.

that a marble beam can be supported by two sawhorses.
You go from admiration to wonder, you feel the touch of
irony, and you stop in the face of the inconceivable.
It is hard to imagine just what production errors could
have generated two automobile tyres that are interlinked
with one another, as if in an embrace. They’re new and
black and shiny, with the tread unworn. They constitute
an absurdity. They call for, even demand attention. But
when they get it, they want even more. They cry out to
be touched, because when faced with the inexplicable,
the mind returns to that of a child, and only with mental
openness and the simplicity of a new mind is it possible to
comprehend certain things. And that is why the child that
is in us organises by hand in order to make contact. Rather
than making a dare, this has to do with exploring. And this
is how it will be from touch, perhaps the most unrefined of
the senses: a tyre is not a tyre, and wheels are not wheels.
For the mind suddenly returned to adulthood, this comes
as a shock, leading to re-evaluation. The tyres-not-tyres will
never be mounted to a car, will never wear out, and will
not roll for thousands of kilometres.
They do more: the open up a new universe and liberate
emotions capable of going much further.

quella connotazione “Italia” in omaggio al made in Italy

The 62S Italia is a revisitation of a model that is already
up to date, already plucky, already pushed to the extreme

name perhaps suggests, this is a limited edition, marked
by the connotation in homage to “Made in Italy” and the
150th anniversary of the country’s unification that is being

The 62S Italia makes a great leap closer to the 72S and
the characteristics of the collection’s new progenitor. The
designers have retained the compact profile of Azimut
sport boats, without a sports flybridge, and instead focused
on the opening hardtop, coming up with a masterpiece
featuring double-curved windows, both longitudinally
and transversally, and glass covered with anti-UV film,

barca, anche a tettuccio chiuso. I motori sviluppano 1150
CV.
a bufalo magnolia.
chiusure a porte scorrevoli.
even with the roof closed. The engines churn out 1150 hp,
which means that the boat can speed along at 36.5 - 37
knots, to the joy of those seeking high performance. In
keeping with the search for ever greater adaptability, as
required by recent market trends, the aft area is convertible:
from a socializing or dining area with seats and a table it
can be quickly turned into a large sunbathing platform, an
area entirely given over to comfort and relaxation.
From the cockpit, access is gained to the standard-equipment
hydraulic swim platform via one of two descents and from
the platform to the crew cabin, which has been expanded
with respect to the 62S to be able to accommodate two crew
members. This modification made it possible to find space
in the crew’s quarters to mount the Seakeeper gyrostabilizer
as well.
Also the interior has been revamped to coordinate it with
the collection’s new decor. So the wood that finishes all
the furnishings is zebrawood, while the contrast colors
are light, with the use of various leathers, with a Buffaloeffect magnolia leather. White leather for the two helm
seats. The galley offers steel and zebrawood juxtapositions
and can be completely isolated from the rest of the boat
by means of sliding doors. There are three cabins. In the
one in the bow the twin beds in a V arrangement can be
placed together to form a double bed. For the skipper an
extraordinary innovation has been introduced, the “bird’s
eye view”, developed and tested by the Azimut-Benetti R&D
department with top-flight partners. It is a system of three
docking cameras that reconstruct the boat’s image in real
time with respect to the dock and the other craft, merging
the three sources into a single image. A navigation aid that
makes it possible to execute maneuvers with great precision.
Tre novità nella Collezione Flybridge. Cominciamo dal

Three new developments in the Flybridge collection. Let’s
start with the 40, a boat that is nimble, quick, and very easy
to skipper, the ideal boat for a family because in a limited
length it offers all the strong points of an Azimut, starting
with a real flybridge, large and livable, two cabins, space,
air, and lots of light. The spaces are structured to enable
great convenience and comfort of life on board. In the galley
the cook will find a technical marble countertop, a pullout microwave oven and a decidedly capacious refrigerator
whose 165 liters make it possible to stay away from port
for several days. Storage volumes have been carved out
all over the boat, including the engine room, which has a
special space with a capacity of over 140 liters to stow the
chairs normally used in the saloon or cockpit. An opening
in the roof of the saloon enables air to pass, but also
communications and - why not? - a tray of cold drinks for
those sunning themselves on the flybridge or steering from
the exterior helm station. The hydraulic swim platform is
standard equipment, a plus that enables easy haulage and
launching of the tender and makes the Azimut 40 one of
the smallest flybridge yachts with a hydraulic platform, one
more important, tangible sign of the care that Azimut puts
into the details, comfort and quality of life on board.
cabine, spazio, aria e tanta luce.
a bordo estremamente comoda e confortevole. In cucina
postazione esterna.

schermo video a scomparsa.
The finishing touches are being put on the new 60 as well,
an 18-meter flybridge yacht that is sure to give satisfaction
to its owners thanks to a great level of comfort and a
separation of crew and guests that is typical of the biggest
boats. A privacy made possible by a large crew cabin with
two beds and access from the swim platform. The layout of
this cabin is modular and changes (two twin beds, either
separate or adjacent) depending on whether or not the
Seakeeper is mounted.
Externally the 60 reprises the new elements of the flybridge
collection, with the characteristic innovative fin on the
deckhouse that joins in the play of curved lines of the
windows and makes the boat’s profile unique even from a
distance. Also on the flybridge - very spaciously proportioned
- we find a glass insert on the outer part of the roll bar.
The interiors faithfully interpret the new tendency of
Azimut flybridges, which favor light contrasts, with honeytinted oak and cream-colored valances.
Just beyond the glass door, to starboard, where the sofas
are usually placed, a furniture unit has been designed to
hold the retractable video screen also. The galley, equipped
with anti-roll structures and shock-absorbing drawers, is
on the main deck in a raised position, directly serving the
dinette.
The lower deck has three cabins. The full-beam, full-height
master cabin is amidships, with two large windows in
three vertical segments that put the owner couple in direct,
continuous contact with the seascape. A living area, located
along the starboard bulwark near the window, competes for
the role of protagonist with the large double bed placed at
45 degrees on the opposite side. The VIP cabin is forward,
equipped with a double bed and horizontal windows,
while a third cabin hosts guests with two twin beds, a large
wardrobe and cabinets for a comfortable stay on board.

In
In corrispondenza
della finestra opposta c’è il vanity. Le armadiature sono a
parete con un volume di storage
leggermente aumentato.
Il secondo cambiamento di lay-out
è apprezzabile nel salone dove le
mutate caratteristiche della scala,
che scende alla cabina master,
hanno consentito di posizionare in
senso longitudinale il bagno giorno,
con conseguente recupero di spazio
per la zona pranzo.
Il decor è immediatamente
percepibile.
Take a masterpiece and try to improve it. A tough
challenge, practically a mission impossible for the Azimut
designers who redesigned the new 88. While maintaining
its untouchable profile and its 55-square-meter flybridge,
a veritable terrace on the sea, and therefore without
altering other strong points like the asymmetric windows
in the hull, the magical areas like the 10 square meters of
the cockpit, the service dinette and the enormous galley
space, the changes that add further value to this model
are basically two: the layout of the lower deck and the
decor. The first involved moving the bathroom in the
master cabin toward the stern, thereby creating a buffer
that isolates the master cabin from the engine room even
more. The new layout also made it possible to modify the
stairs, which now have a more discreet access into the
suite. To port, in full light, a breakfast zone was created,
with two armchairs and a table. Corresponding to the
opposite window is the vanity. The wardrobes are built
into the walls and have a slightly larger storage volume.
The second layout change can
be seen in the saloon, where the
changed characteristics of the
stairs going down to the master
cabin made it possible to position
the day bathroom longitudinally,
with a resulting gain of space for
the dining area.
The
decor
stands
out
immediately. All the forms have
been changed. The architect
Salvagni, who designed the
interiors, transformed the shapes
by softening corners and creating
curves. Breaks in continuity between ceilings and walls
are seen everywhere. The system of portals that separate
the rooms become a new loop system that invites passage
through the softness of the rounded forms. Also in
the master cabin the rotundities of the new decor are
repeated, seen in a wrap-around headboard that includes
the bedside tables. Another instance of particularly
interesting design is represented by the slits for opening
the wardrobes: they design a soft shape, an invitation to
open and enter into the comfort of one’s clothes. There is
no lack for mirrored surfaces, which further augment the
sensation of space.

Già ricercatore universitario, consulente nel mondo
industriale nell’area del “just in time”, responsabile nel
settore metalmeccanico per una serie di insediamenti
in Paesi emergenti, Gennaro Candida De Matteo è nel
settore della nautica da sei anni. Da sei mesi è entrato a
far parte del Gruppo Azimut-Benetti.

Innanzi tutto grazie per il suo
tempo, ingegnere. Vogliamo definire
l’ambito della sua responsabilità
nel Gruppo?
Sono direttore operativo per le
imbarcazioni Azimut, Azimut Grande
e Benetti superiori ai 24 metri. Seguo
le imbarcazioni allestite nei due siti
produttivi di Viareggio e Livorno,
più i processi di laminazione della
vetroresina nel sito produttivo di
Fano. Per quanto riguarda Azimut
e Grande le imbarcazioni che
produciamo a Viareggio vanno
dall’Azimut

al
“Grande” 120SL, uno dei prodotti che
lanceremo a brevissimo. Per quanto
riguarda Benetti, l’imbarcazione più
piccola è il Benetti Delfino, anch’essa
“viareggina”; le più grandi a Livorno,
fino a circa 70 metri di lunghezza.
Having worked as a university researcher, Just-In-Time
manufacturing consultant, and head of metalworking
for several installations in emerging countries, Gennaro

industry for six years. He has been at Azimut-Benetti
Group for six months.
L’ingegner Gennaro Candida De Matteo, Direttore Operativo - Viareggio, Fano, Livorno.
First of all, thanks so much for
your time, sir. Can you tell us
about your role in the Group?
I’m the operations manager at
Azimut, Azimut Grande and Benetti
for boats over 24 metres. I’m in charge
of boat production and fit-out at the
two plants in Viareggio e Livorno,
and the fibreglass lamination process
at the Fano plant. The boats we
produce for Azimut and Grande in
Viareggio include the Azimut 74
Magellano and the “Grande” 120SL,
which is one of the new products
about to be launched. For Benetti, the
smallest boat is the Benetti Delfino,
which is also made in Viareggio; the
biggest ones, up to 70 metres long,
are made in Livorno.
What does production entail?
It starts with the needs of the customer; and, we are
responsible for the entire execution process. So, we take
care of all the different stages, from product layout in our
technical and style office, to logistics and purchasing for
obtaining supplies, all the way through construction and
product delivery. Special attention is paid throughout
to project management. All these phases are considered
part of the “production” process.
And when it comes to production times?
We have to set the parameters. We calculate the
production time from the moment work begins on the
boat; once upon a time this was called “setting the keel”.
For fibreglass boats, setting the keel begins with the
lamination process, while for steel/aluminium ones it
begins with cutting the first sheet. From that point, the
lead time varies from 7 to 10 months for a 78 footer, to
be more precise: 2-3 months for fibreglass work and 5-7
months for on-site fit-out. For a custom steel/aluminium
project, we are talking about dozens of months, from
20 to 30 depending on the size of boat and level of
customisation: it’s a big difference.
Poi, tanta pianificazione,
sincronizzazione e qualche goccia di sudore.
What do you do to speed up production times?
Yacht use is tied to different seasonal cycles which
are different in different hemispheres. Based on these
different delivery needs, we create a production slot
schedule. We figure out which slots need to be completed
in the summer cycle, for example for the Mediterranean,
and which for autumn, for example for America.
Obviously the goal is to ensure that the products arrive
on time in relation to these yearly benchmarks so the
boat owner can enjoy the boat during the prime season.
Then there is a lot of planning, co-ordinating, and some
sweat involved.
Lo stabilimento di Viareggio
in una suggestiva immagine notturna.
Between Viareggio and Livorno
there is also a difference between
composite and steel...
Exactly. We have two business models to satisfy different
market needs. One is the production with fibreglass
which is easily highly customisable because of its
physical properties; however, the material also places
significant constraints on the exterior form of the boat.
There is another product line which enables more
intensive customisation because of the technical
properties of the materials - steel and aluminium
are much more malleable and flexible with fewer
constructability constraints than the moulded models.
This is why we talk about two business models: one the
so-called semi-serial production model, though, actually
the fit-out is extensively customised; and the other one
which is completely customised. The two plants at
Viareggio and Livorno are aligned with these two aims;
in Viareggio it is to serve the semi-serial production
product market and in Livorno, the steel/aluminium
custom product market.
Gennaro Candida De Matteo, Operations Director - Viareggio, Fano, Livorno.
Tra Viareggio e Livorno vi è anche
una distinzione tra composito e acciaio...
Esatto.
sulle forme esteriori dell’imbarcazione.
By night, the Viareggio facility makes
a striking impression.

Nessun dipendente, nessun apprendista.
The Arno River is only 240 km long. However, it is
privileged to pass through the world’s most famous cities
for art and history such as Florence and Pisa. In Valdarno,
between Florence and Pisa, the river mirrors the gentleness
of the Tuscan countryside with the same waters that have
reflected the works of art it has passed along the way.
There are numerous small artisanal workshops that harvest
this heritage, but only one by the name of Cuoio Design by
Alfio Baldini, one of the leaders in hand-worked leather.
There are no employees and no apprentices. Alfio and his
wife are the only ones working at the Bientina workshop
in Pisa province. They work from six-thirty in the morning
to seven-thirty in the evening, with a break to prepare and
enjoy an Italian-style lunch.
In the hands of Alfio Baldini the leather, which is tanned
employing special techniques to render it suitable for boats
- for example UV resistance and water-proofing - , takes on
the form of the objects it covers.
The works are entire pieces of furniture or elements within
the furniture such as head-boards, furnishings, details,
fittings and handles.
He uses two types of tools: conventional ones like the knife
or hammer, and custom ones - without a particular name
and difficult to describe - that have been carefully crafted
and developed over decades of use.

TECHNOLOGY
punta in parte già integrate sulle grandi navi”.
particolari su tutti i ponti esterni e nelle sale comuni,
In modalità “relax”, invece, saranno privilegiate
contenuti “entertainment on demand” per ciascuna cabina.
E così via. “Integriamo il meglio del meglio offerto dalla
tecnologia mondiale”, dice ancora Franco Zini. Hardware
l’armatore possa ottenere l’effetto desiderato “in punta
i-phone o qualsiasi dispositivo touch screen. Perché il
divertimento possa cominciare subito.
“We work with boats starting at 45 metres” says Franco
Zini of HMS Italy. “On yachts of this size, we usually find
at least three decks and a number of cabins where we can
apply optimally sized, state-of-the-art technology that has
already been integrated to some extent on cruise ships”.
For example, by entering a simple command in the
integrated control system, the entire yacht switches from
“party mood” to “relax mood”. There are an infinite number
of “moods” that can be configured and called up, each with
a unique style tailored to the owner’s wishes.
In the “party mood”, the system sets the particular lighting
tones on all outside decks and in the common areas while
proposing “ad hoc” selection of audio and video sources
for distribution to the lounges, thus ensuring just the right
atmosphere for a festive evening on board.
In the “relax mood”, on the other hand, a combination
of soft lighting and audio is given priority, with ondemand entertainment available in each cabin. And so
on and so forth. “We integrate the best of the best offered
by worldwide technology”, adds Franco Zini. Energyefficient, miniaturised hardware with high aesthetic value
specifically designed for use in such distinct environments
that takes up little space and harmonises perfectly with the
architectural decor.
Above all, it’s an interface that’s easy to use, since the
yacht owner can achieve the desired effect with the simple
touch of a button right at his fingertips: lighting, comfort,
entertainment, multimedia, and security.
With this system, it’s possible to control everything using
iPads, iPhones, or any other touch-screen device, enabling
entertainment to start without delay.
Gli impianti HMS spaziano a 360 gradi:
dalle grandi navi da crociera
agli yacht privati, alle barche charter.
The HMS systems cover a 360 degree range:
from large cruise ships to private yachts
and charter boats.
“video on demand”, sistemi di comunicazione interna e
sistemi di movimentazione (Rigging).
HMS, parte del gruppo IEC, azienda all’avanguardia
“Travel is about the journey, not the destination.”
On large cruise ships, the keys to a successful holiday are
technology, surroundings, and entertainment. Passengers
spend most of their time on board, and entertainment
constitutes the main service. If you’re thinking about onboard systems, you should consider a platform that is both
sophisticated and functional: management of architectonic
lighting, audio and video distributions systems, including
on-demand video, internal communications systems, and
rigging systems.
HMS, part of the IEC Group, is at the forefront of integrated
entertainment solutions for cruise ships and yachts,
specialising in the design, installation, programming,
and activation of these types of systems - whether for new
construction or as part of the renovation and upgrading
of facilities that have already been in use for many years.
Today, HMS puts its 28 years of experience more and more
in the service of private boat owners in order to enable
megayachts as well to have innovative concepts and a level
of service in keeping with this luxury target.

rotonde, posizionate ai due lati del
calendario a lancetta, permettono
di offrire ulteriori informazioni:
a sinistra l’indicazione giorno/

bisestili.
I pulsanti
Il cinturino è in alligatore nero opaco, cucito a mano. Il

A number of details distinguish

The black-oxidized gold hands

generosity and elegance. The chronograph pushers, likewise
in 18K white gold, exhibit the same slightly rounded
rectangular shape as those that adorned the celebrated
chronographs of the 1940s and 1950s.
Its screwed display back, on the other hand, has a
contemporary design devoted to a show of quality. The
sapphire-crystal window showcases some of the most
attractive elements of mechanical watchmaking artistry:
the large Gyromax® balance as well as the key levers and
wheels of the chronograph mechanism.
The matt black alligator strap is hand-stitched. The foldover

it offers a sensation of precision and exclusivity, those of

This pleasant, polite idea is the work of Torremato by Il
Fanale group, a company whose calling since its inception
has been dedicated to “Made in Italy”, with a passion for
bringing together artistry and genius to create designs,
devise situations, deliver wonders. In short, the ability to
make a contribution, day by day, to making quotidian life
richer and thus more enjoyable.
The illuminated seating bitts, for example, are exterior lights
drawing inspiration from the harbour setting and, using a
process of “Galvanic” self-irony, reinterpret it in a familiar
setting along the access paths at home in order to lead,
follow, and render safe the passage along home sidewalks.
The lighting technology is state-of-the-art LED, while the
materials are those of conventional bitts found in harbours:
cast iron with wooden heads (thermally treated ash) or
100% cast iron, as set forth on the label, along with a
recommendation to wash with rain water and to not iron.
Those who live with the sea in their hearts but don’t want
to hear the screeching of seagulls in the garden have every
opportunity to be original and up to date and to see clearly.

and on an English lawn, it’s perfect in an Italian garden,
and you can also sit on it in simple jeans.
It plays on matches and contrasts in materials, which come
together in split-level geometric shapes, all of them orbiting
around a central column. Wood and metal dress up the
light, in LED of course, in a play of light beams filtered
through the rhythm of the fullness and emptiness of the
wood surfaces.
Multifunctional by birth, Keplero is a light and a seat at the

ogni giorno dell’anno.
giunge all’edizione n. 34.

all’usato, con circa 50 barche in acqua. Allo stesso

saranno attraccate imbarcazioni a vela o a motore dai

reason, a number of new initiatives have been launched
to attract a wider audience and new exhibitors. Indeed,
the boat show is seeking to connect the largest number of
potential boat owners with the widest possible selection.
For this reason, the boat show expanded in 2006 to
include Port Pierre Canto, which is connected to the
show’s main exhibition space by shuttle service, and
it continues to draw an increasing number of visitors;
this is where a part of the show dedicated to used boats
is located, and roughly 50 boats are expected to be in
the water, most of which are available for sea trials.

sector that has a large number of fans and is seeing
growing attendance. Once again this year, the Espace

sail and motor vessels from 10 to 36 metres will be

In response to public demand, the 2011 Festival de la

large exhibition space on land as well as a large number
of boats in the water, where sea trials will be possible – a
luxury that few other boat shows can afford.

Grande Barriera Corallina. E qui il viaggio potrebbe anche
terminare, perché a volerla esplorare tutta, la Barriera
richiederebbe qualche decina di anni. Stiamo parlando
dell’unico organismo vivente terrestre visibile dallo spazio.

Visiting Australia is a phrase devoid of meaning. What
does it mean to visit such an immense continent? Not even
Australians, who are used to covering long distances and
moving around by airplane, can say for sure if the entire
territory has been explored yet or not. It would take an
entire lifetime to visit just a part of Australia, even a large
part, all the while hoping that you have sampled the best
sections.
If you want to take a simple trip here, you have to make
some decisions ahead of time. The options are: the coast
or the interior? Let’s say the coast. North or south? North.
Or rather, northeast.
This is not a random decision. We are heading northeast
because there lies the Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of
Queensland. And here is where our journey could very
well stop, because exploring the entire Great Barrier Reef
could take decades. We are talking about the only living
organism on Earth that is visible from space. It is more

bene protetto dall’Unesco.
nell’azzurro dell’oceano.

A terra

You cannot visit everything. In fact, a large part of the Great

some several thousand miles, we did not give up anything
in terms of beauty and magic. There are more than 20
kilometres of white sand, which you can enjoy from astride
a camel: we are at Cable Beach, just a few miles north
of the city of Broome. It is often ranked among the most
costruzione: in primo piano l’Opera House, fiancheggiata
lontananza, spiagge e montagne.
Abbiamo iniziato dicendo che visitare l’Australia è
un’impresa impossibile in una sola
vita.
c’è in mezzo: 7 milioni e mezzo
di chilometri quadrati, ognuno
dei quali vale da solo il viaggio,
da qualunque parte del pianeta si
provenga.
beautiful beaches in the world, a peaceful oasis and a
never-ending festival of sun and nature. You can stay in a
luxury resort complete with a thermal spring spa, as well
as use the nearby airport to visit the main cities throughout
the country. One of the country’s most important cities is
the last stop on this carefully selected tour.
We are once again on the east coast, in one of the most
beautiful cities in the world. Sidney certainly also owes its
fame to the government’s commitment to maintaining a
high quality of life without compromising natural beauty.
The port of Sydney symbolises all this; it is the most
beautiful natural port on the planet, with more than 50
square kilometres of water surrounded by luxury homes
but also many green spaces. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is
the undisputed centrepiece, an arched bridge that connects
the northern section to the rest of the city. You can cross it
on foot, on a bicycle, in a car, or by light rail. Or you can
pass under it on your yacht. Of the possible activities you
can do on the bridge and in the surrounding area, the most
popular one is the thrilling BridgeClimb. Over one and a
half million courageous souls have climbed to the top via
stairs and walkways. Their effort has been rewarded by a
breathtaking 360° view looking out from the tallest point of
the structure: in the foreground is the Sidney Opera House,
flanked by the Royal Botanic Gardens, the silhouettes of
skyscrapers, and in the distance, beaches and mountains.
We started by saying that there is too much to visit in
Australia for just one lifetime. This is why we have
focused on three areas. We have missed most of the
perimeter of Australia, with its
coasts and everything in between:
7.5 million square kilometres, each
one deserving a trip of its own,
from whatever point of origin on
the planet.
Il ponte sulla baia di Sidney.
