Avanti – Second Edition McGraw Hill
Lab Manual and Workbook Quia online program
Recommended:
Adorni/Primorac, English Grammar for Students of Italian
Harper-Sansoni-Collins Dictionary
FILM
•
Pane e tulipani (There are three DVDs at the library. You can also purchase your
personal copy on Amazon.)
LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:
Students must complete a language through the intermediate level (courses
numbered 30). Students starting a language at Drew will require three semesters
of language study to reach this proficiency level. It is highly recommended and
expected that these three semesters be completed consecutively.
EXAMS and GENERAL POLICIES
There will be one Final Exam, two listening comprehension activities, 4 essays, 8
tests, and one final project. Tests will include grammar, vocabulary, and oral
comprehension. There will be also some pop-quizzes to test the Italian vocabulary.
Make-up exams and tests are given only for REAL medical or personal emergencies,
and a note is required. There is also a mandatory audio and multimedia component,
QUIA, (http://www.mhcentro.com/books) assigned after each lesson that will
reinforce the concepts covered in class. Your instructor will explain how to use this
program.
ATTENTION:
Students’ homework will be posted on
https://moodle.drew.edu/ and sent through e-mail.
We cannot stress enough the importance of keeping up with this mandatory
multimedia program as it provides essential reinforcement to class work. WE
EXPECT THAT STUDENTS STUDY THE MATERIAL TO BE COVERED IN
CLASS BEFORE EACH LESSON AND MEMORIZE THE WORDS AT THE END
OF EACH CHAPTER (VOCABOLARIO) SO THAT THEY CAN TALK AND
UNDERSTAND WHAT IS SAID IN CLASS. This preparation will make you feel
more confident, more at ease in class and better able to participate actively—and
ready to enjoy learning Italian! The only way to learn to speak a language is by
speaking it, so Italian will be used at all times in class, and students are expected
to use it as well. English will be kept at a minimum, and only for administrative
issues. It is recommended that you buy the book English Grammar for Students of
Italian that covers important grammatical terms.
PARTICIPATION: Attendance is not considered participation. You are graded
upon active participation in class: questions, answers, group work, volunteering,
etc. (You are not graded on your mistakes but on your willingness to speak and
interact with your instructor and your fellow classmates.)
Essays
Students will write 4 essays and they are to be written in two drafts. The first and
the second draft are both due on Mondays (see under assignments for the
deadlines). Both drafts must be typed (double space). Bear in mind that the first
draft must be carefully written, correctly spelled and thoroughly proofread as if it
were the final copy (ACCENTS INCLUDED). You will be graded on both drafts and
the second grade will be an average of the two.
Film
The film is divided into 8 short segments that you will watch individually either at
the library or at the language lab during the assigned period. You can also purchase
the film on Amazon or rent it through Netflix. You will receive a list of words that
will help you understanding the segments. Therefore, it is strongly recommended
that you disregard the subtitles as much as possible. You should watch the assigned
segment at least twice, complete the assigned activity, and be prepared to discuss
it in class.

information).
ITALIAN CLUB: C.I.A.O. (Cultural Italian American Organization) is a
student-run organization dedicated to informing students about Italian and
Italian-American culture in an attempt to dispel common stereotypes while
enjoying the heritage and language. Activities include movie screenings,
dinners, lectures, charity work, and performances. Some of C.I.A.O.'s
activities for the spring '11 semester include: Film Festival, Holiday Bake
Sale for Charity, Care Packages for the Troops, & Performance at The
Metropolitan Opera House. For more information and to join the mailing list
contact Deanna Gencarelli at [email protected].
SUMMER PROGRAM IN VENICE: This four-week program offers up to 8
credits in language and culture courses in Venice, a world center of the arts
with a unique environment and a vibrant cultural life that is ideal for learning
the Italian language and its culture. The courses will help not only students
who plan to minor or major in Italian, but also students who are interested in
the culture and life style of Italy, or just want to complete the language or
language in context requirements. The deadline to apply is March 1, 2011.

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY: Language acquisition is a skill requiring
regular practice, especially in an introductory course where it is very easy to fall
behind. Non-justified absences and lack of active participation during class and in
the multimedia program will affect your performance and, ultimately, your grade.
Two unexcused absences will lower your final grade by half a letter grade (a
B+ will become a B for example) subsequent absences cost 1/4 grade each.
Excused absences include religious holidays as well as serious illness (a doctor’s
note is required) or family emergencies.
BE PUNCTUAL and try to arrive five minutes before the class starts. Late arrivals
will disrupt the pace of the class and negatively affect your grade. Three late
arrivals will be considered an absence. Remember also to turn off your cell
phones before the class starts.
