The main external physical and biogeochemical forcing in SQB originates from the neighboring coastal ocean, which is strongly influenced by upwelling. The frequency of the upwelling pulses and tidal exchanges control the temporal variability of primary production and nutrients near the mouth of the bay. Therefore, understanding the role and impact of upwelling is crucial, as it can have very different consequences on ecosystems depending on the basin scale, ecosystem types and physical processes. To investigate these processes, we used a hydrodynamic model forced by tides, wind stress and heat fluxes. The hydrodynamic model has been compared with experimental data of current velocity, temperature and salinity collected during May and August 2004. We suggest that the ability of this ecosystem to assimilate nutrients through primary production is the result of the advection of newly upwelled waters from the adjacent coastal ocean. 30 maggio 2014 ore 11:00 Sala “Antonio Michelato”, Palazzina “Ferruccio Mosetti” OGS – Borgo Grotta Gigante http://nettuno.ogs.trieste.it/jungo/caffe_scientifico/
