Il canonico Jim Rosenthal, di anni 60,
che gira per le strade di Canterbury ogni
dicembre come un vero S. Nicola, viene oggi
(sabato 21 gennaio) insediato come parroco
della chiesa di S. Nicola in un paese del Kent
che si chiama “S. Nicola al Guado”, distretto
di Thanet. Questo dicembre la festa, al suo
12° anno, è molto riuscita grazie alla partecipazione dell’arcivescovo di Canterbury e
del vescovo di Dover che hanno camminato
al fianco San Nicola.
Il canonico Rosenthal è il fondatore
della St Nicholas Society UK/USA, che
ha lo scopo di insegnare chi era realmente
Santa Claus, cui sono dedicate tante chiese e
al quale si riferiscono tanti eventi durante
l’avvento. Egli si è impegnato in modo
particolare nella diffusione del culto di S.
Nicola nel mondo. Se infatti andate su
Internet e cliccate “stnicholascenter ...
church Gazetteer” vedrete apparire un
mappamondo suddiviso in continenti;
continuando a cliccare entrerete nei vari
stati e all’interno di questi troverete una
serie di immagini di chiese di S. Nicola con
la specificazione se si tratta di chiese
cattoliche, ortodosse o protestanti.
La signora Carol Myers, sua attiva collaboratrice, garantisce la ramificazione della
St Nicholas Society negli Stati Uniti. Il Centro Studi Nicolaiani di Bari si mantiene in

contatto con entrambi. L’amico James
Rosenthal viene quasi tutti gli anni a Bari
per la festa di S. Nicola ed è gradito ospite
della comunità domenicana che custodisce
le reliquie di S. Nicola. Qui ha fatto amicizia
sia con i Baresi che con i pellegrini che
arrivano da altre nazioni.
In passato ha vissuto per 7 anni all’Old
Palace di Canterbury al tempo del Lord
Carey, addetto al Dipartimento delle
Comunicazioni della Comunione Anglicana.
“Il Kent è come un ritorno a casa e non vedo
l’ora di andarci”, ha detto. E aggiunge che il
fatto di riportare il sorriso su migliaia di
volti lo fa stare bene per tutto l’anno.

Padre Rosenthal è emozionato per il fatto di
“ritornare nella diocesi di Canterbury e
specialmente nel paese di St Nicholas at
Wade e Chislet”. Egli celebrerà l’eucarestia e
predicherà per la prima volta nel suo nuovo
ufficio il 22 gennaio alle ore 10,15 nella
chiesa di St Nicholas at Wade.

La cerimonia del suo insediamento avrà
luogo oggi sabato 21 gennaio 2012 alle
ore 15,00 a St Nicholas at Wade. A
presiedere la celebrazione è il vescovo di
Canterbury Trevor Willmott, con la
partecipazione
dell’arcidiacono
Sheila
Watson e il sacerdote in carica Bob Coles di
Minster. Dovrebbe esserci anche il decano
della Cattedrale.
Originario di Chicago, Padre Rosenthal ha
svolto il suo ministero a Londra nelle chiese
di St Matthews, Westminster, All Hallows by
the Tower, St Stephen Walbrook e
Marylebone. E’ canonico onorario di 3
cattedrali e presta la sua opera come esperto
St Nicholas at Wade Parish
St Nicholas at Wade, di solito chiamato
semplicemente “S. Nicola”, è parte del
Wantsum Group, ed è un commune rurale
nel distretto di Thanet nel Kent
(Inghilterra). Nel censimento che fu fatto nel
2001 alla parrocchia si registrarono 782
persone. Anche il villaggio di Sarre fa parte
della stessa amministrazione comunale.
Il suo nome deriva dalla sua ubicazione, vale
a dire dal suo confine occidentale dell’Isola
di Thanet, che anticamente era separata
dalla terraferma del Kent. Prima che i canali
del fiume Wantsum e del fiume Stour
finissero per insabbiarsi era possible passare
da una parte all’altra al guado. In epoca
romana il canale era navigabile e il luogo
probabilmente molto trafficato per la
presenza degli accampamenti sassoni di
Regulbium (Reculver) e di Rutupiae
(Richborough), entrambi nelle vicinanze.
Resti di cantieri romani per la costruzione di
navi sono stati trovati tra St Nicholas at
Wade e Sarre.

CHIESE DI S. NICOLA
IN GRAN BRETAGNA
Le chiese di S. Nicola in Inghilterra
conservano tutto il fascino degli imponenti
edifici medioevali come in nessun altro
paese del mondo. Certamente anche in
Italia, Francia, Germania e Russia si vedono
bellissime chiese di S. Nicola, ma un gran
numero di esse è andata soggetta a
consistenti modernizzazioni. Al contrario, se
il vostro sguardo si ferma sulle chiese inglesi
di S. Nicola, avrete la netta sensazione di
essere trasportati indietro all’epoca di
Guglielmo il Conquistatore o di Riccardo
Cuor di Leone.
Molte parrocchie di S. Nicola sono
particolarmente attive. Quando mi trovai a
fare da guida ai principi Carlo e Diana in
visita alla Basilica (2 maggio 1985) volli
cogliere l’occasione per stabilire un contatto
con la chiesa anglicana. Avendo dedicato a
quella visita un numero speciale del
Bollettino di S. Nicola, lo spedii a molte
chiese del Regno Unito. Ebbi la gradita
sorpresa di numerose risposte da parte di
parrocchie anglicane.

Caratteristico delle parrocchie inglesi (e in
generale delle chiese protestanti) è lo spirito
ecumenico di cui sono animate. Quasi tutte
nel presentare il loro sito su Internet vi
invitano molto caldamente ad entrare ed
unirsi alla loro comunità in preghiera, senza
tener conto della chiesa cui appartenete. Un
esempio che, a mio avviso, farebbero bene a
seguire anche i cattolici e gli ortodossi.
Il seguente elenco di 611 chiese di S. Nicola è
un aggiornamento di quello che pubblicai
insieme a Philip Barnes nel 1994 e che era
basato soprattutto sul testo Studies in
Church Dedications di Frances Arnold
Foster). Allora avevo notizia di 428 chiese.
Recentemente ho preso in considerazione lo
straordinario lavoro di James Rosenthal che
si trova su Internet cliccando « St Nicholas
Society … Churches Gazetteer ». Il suo
elenco,
corredato
di
immagini
è
particolarmente utile anche perché ad ogni
chiesa fa corrispondere la chies cristiana che
ne ha cura.

Come terza fonte ho utilizzato direttamente i
siti che appaiono su Internet. Si ha
l’impressione che ormai tutte le chiese
abbiano un sito o per l’interesse dei parroci
o di amatori di locali monumenti. Di
conseguenza è solo questione di pazienza,
ma si trova quasi tutto ciò che si cerca.
Anche se non ho terminato la verifica,
preferisco cogliere questa occasione per
offrire un elenco provvisorio, in modo tale
che se vengono notati e segnalati degli
errori, questi possano essere corretti.
Quanto
alle
cappelle,
ho
incluso
esclusivamente le cappelle nel senso di
chiese piccole, omettendo le cappelle (sia
pure importanti) all’interno di qualche
chiesa o cattedrale. In tal senso restano da
verificare le chiese annesse alle scuole
elementari che talvolta sono semplici stanze
adibite a cappella, talaltra sono vere e
proprie chiese. Per il momento ho preferito
ometterle.
