Le Stanze dei Principi furono realizzate agli inizi del Cinquecento sotto il
principe arcivescovo Leonhard von Keutschach (reg. 1495-1519). Gli spazi, e soprattutto la Stube Dorata, furono dotati
dei materiali più pregiati ed allestiti con
le tecniche più raffinate. In questo caso
si tratta di un connubio straordinario fra
un appartamento a mo’ di Stube corredato di elementi tipici per gli allestimenti
religiosi del tardo gotico. Le odierne pareti in legno a vista erano un tempo ricoperte di preziose tappezzerie in pelle dorata, i punti più chiari sulla superficie blu
della parete coincidono con la posizione
degli ornamenti e bottoni di un tempo.

The State Rooms originated in
the early 16th century under Prince
Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (r.
1495-1519). The methods and materials
used to furnish and decorate the rooms
were elaborate and precious, especially
for the Golden Chamber. In a unique
way, the State Rooms combine the style of
residential quarters with sacred elements
of the late Gothic. The wooden walls
seen today were once covered in valuable gilded leather, the light marks on the
blue wall surface show the placement
of the original ornaments and buttons.

Verso la metà dell’Ottocen-
to, durante l’epoca storicista, si ridestò
l’interesse per le Stanze dei Principi.
Rappresentazioni della Stube Dorata
risalenti al 1845 dimostrano che erano
già scomparsi alcuni componenti dell´allestimento, quali elementi tettonici,
tappezzerie e talune sculture. Negli anni
1850/51 le stanze furono sottoposte ad
un ampio restauro sotto la direzione del
pittore Georg Pezolt. Le parti mancanti
vennero integrate secondo la concezione di Pezolt, gli elementi danneggiati furono sostituiti, le superfici delle pareti e
dettagli di oggetti vennero in gran parte
ridipinti. Le tappezzerie in pelle delle pareti furono sostituite da quelle di carta.

Nel 1942 si pensò di smontare e
mettere al sicuro l’arredamento e le decorazioni per proteggere le Stanze dei Principi da eventuali danni durante la guerra. In occasione della reinstallazione, per
opera dello scultore Jakob Adlhart, si
mise anche mano al restauro degli spazi.
L’intento principale verteva ad asportare
i lavori di Pezolt e a ristabilire lo stato
apparentemente medievale. Negli anni
Cinquanta, non essendo soddisfatti delle misure adottate da Adlhart, la Stube
Dorata venne sottoposta ad un ulteriore
“intervento“ da parte di Josef Watzinger. Le pitture sulle pareti sono opera
di Josef Watzinger, il posizionamento
degli ornamenti si deve a Jakob Adlhart.
In the mid-19th century, in the
period of historicism, interest in the
State Rooms was once again awakened.
As illustrations of the Golden Chamber
of 1845 show, features such as the wall
ornamentation, gilded leather and sculptures were already lost. From 1850-51,
a basic restoration of the premises took
place under the guidance of the painter
Georg Pezolt. Missing parts were added according to Pezolt‘s imagination;
defective items were replaced, the wall
surfaces and object parts were refinished
in large areas. Instead of with leather,
the walls were covered with wallpaper.

In order to protect the State
Rooms from war damage, in 1942 the
furnishings and decorations were dismantled and safely stored away. With its
reassembly by sculptor Jakob Adlhart, a
restoration of the rooms was achieved
simultaneously. The primary aim of the
action was the removal of the work of
Pezolt and the return to a seemingly medieval state. Due to dissatisfaction with
the actions undertaken by Adlhart, the
Golden Chamber was subjected to an
„after treatment“ by Josef Watzinger in
the 1950s. The finish of the walls dates
back to Josef Watzinger. The hanging of
the ornaments dates to Jacob Adlhart.

Le Stanze dei Principi erano state sottoposte a notevoli cambiamenti, in
particolare alle superfici dipinte, e vengono oggi a trovarsi in una condizione
eterogenea. Per conservarle nella loro
unità potenziale si sono evitati interventi di ripristino. L´oggetto è stato rispettato nella sua configurazione materica
e storica così come a noi pervenuto. I
punti più chiari sulle superfici parietali
dipinte di blu, che mostrano l´originaria ubicazione di ornamenti e bottoni
dorati, sono stati conservati come documento storico. A causa della frettolosa,
imprecisa e materialmente incompatibile esecuzione dell´ultimo intervento di
restauro, misure conservative sono state
prese per migliorare la qualità degli ultimi lavori.

Due to the two previous processes of conservation, the furniture of the
State Rooms had been subject to numerous considerable changes, resulting in
the frames being a mixture of different
styles. As the rooms had maintained
their readability and authenticity, there
was no need to take measures to restore
them to their original state. The appearance of the rooms is seen to have developed in a historical process. The marks
on the walls, resulting from the changed
positions of buttons and ornaments are
also being seen as historical documents
and have not been altered. As previous
conservations were not carried out to a
satisfactory degree of professionalism,
the main was to enhance the conservatory measures taken.

Preliminari sono stati i cospicui lavori di ricerca per chiarire la storia ed i cambiamenti avvenuti nel corso del tempo nelle Stanze dei Principi.
Attraverso l´analisi delle fonti storico-artistiche è stato possibile giungere ad
un´interpretazione critica della dimensione storica ed estetica dell´oggetto, seguita da un inventario dello stato di fatto.
Sulla base di questi risultati e delle nuove incognite sorte è stata pianificata la fase di analisi.

Analysis of the layers of finish
Investigations of and research in the history of prior restorations and changes
of the wall installed furnishing of the
State Rooms formed the very beginning
of our work. By means of an assessment
of all the available sources concerning
the artistic history of the object, a critical analysis of the esthetical and historical dimensions of the object has been
made possible. Subsequently a findings
oriented interpretation and an analysis,
assessing the art historical aspects of the
object were created. These elaborations
and findings formed the basis for a target-oriented and well-founded investigation of the object and its substance.
Le indagini scientifiche sono
state portate avanti da un team di restauratori altamente specializzati. Queste includono non solo l´inventario e
la valutazione dei degradi, ma anche
analisi macroscopiche e microscopiche degli strati e dei pigmenti apportati nel corso del tempo. Queste analisi favoriscono l´identificazione dei
periodi e delle fasi di rielaborazione e
forniscono informazioni sui materiali e le tecniche utilizzate. Ad esse sono
state accostate analisi dendrocronologiche e fisico-tecniche. Lo scopo delle
ricerche è di giungere and un concept
completo di conservazione e restauro.

Damage assessment
The scientific investigations were carried
out by a team of highly specialised restorers and conservators. In addition to the
assessment of the substance and possible
damages, macroscopic and microscopic analyses of the layers and pigments
of the fittings were carried out. These
analyses helped in the identification of
different historical periods and revisions
and also provided valuable information
about the materials featured in the object. Additionally technical-physical and
dendrochronological investigations were
carried out. These investigations aimed
at creating a comprehensive concept
for the conservation and restoration.
Le analisi sono corredate da
una dettagliata mappatura materica e
dei degradi. La mappatura materica
rivela la materialità della superficie visibile. La mappatura dei degradi evidenzia graficamente i danni. Le schedature dei danni sono essenziali per
procedere alla progettazione e all’appalto dei lavori di restauro e risanamento.
Forniscono inoltre i dettagli necessari
per le perizie storico-culturali e sono
fondamentali per il restauro e il risanamento di beni artistici e culturali.

The examination is accompanied
by detailed material and damage assessments. The material assessment indicates the materials of the visible surfaces. The damage assessment graphically
describes the diverse damage. Damage
assessments form the basis for the planning and proposal of restoration and
rehabilitation programs. They serve as
guidance for art historical evaluation and
as a basis for the restoration and rehabilitation of artistic and cultural heritage.
Una volta conclusa l’analisi di
tutte le ricerche compiute sull’oggetto, si
é proceduto all’elaborazione di un concetto di conservazione e restauro. Le
misure adottate tendono a rendere più
“calmo“ e “uniforme“ l’effetto generale
dell’insieme oltre a consolidare e ripulire
le superfici delle strutture e delle pitture, tenendo conto dello stato sviluppatosi nel tempo. Sono stati rimossi dettagli
inadeguati, come ad esempio pitture sovrapposte/bronzature. Le superfici sono
state rese uniformi tramite ritocchi.

Prima dell´intervento le Stanze
dei Principi non erano dotate di un impianto per la regolazione del clima interno; misurazioni in loco hanno rivelato
la presenza di elevate oscillazioni climatiche che hanno causato, nel corso degli
anni, ingenti danni alle decorazioni lignee medievali. A causa dei vincoli legati alla materialità storica dell´oggetto
non è stato possibile procedere all´inserimento di un impianto di climatizzazione. Pertanto si è optato per l´adozione
di interventi mirati volti a migliorare le
prestazioni complessive dell´oggetto.
La passerella che guida i visitatori all´interno delle Stanze è equipaggiata
con pannelli radianti posti sotto il tappeto, mentre la parete intonacata della
Sala Dorata è dotata di un riscaldamento a parete che permette di regolare i
picchi climatici durante il periodo invernale e minimizzare i danni agli allestimenti. Per ovviare ai problemi dovuti
ad un´eccessiva o troppo scarsa umidità
interna si è deciso di controllare la circolazione dell´aria attraverso le finestre: a
tal fine le finestre degli anni ´60 sono state sostituite con nuovi infissi, ricostruiti
sulla base degli originali elementi storici e dotati di apertura motorizzata per la
regolazione del clima interno ed il miglioramento dell´efficienza energetica.
Prior to our recent interventions the State Rooms did not feature a
well-planned space conditioning. The
results of the climate measurements
suggested problematic climatic conditions, resulting in numerous damages to the medieval wood furniture.
As no interventions in terms of the enclosing walls are possible, a well-adapted
space conditioning was not likely to be
achieved in the future either, which is
why we decided to regulate the overall
performance by means of target oriented
interventions. These interventions comprised of the equipping of the visitor area
with a carpet heating or the installation
of a temperature regulator on the walls
of the Golden Hall. The latter installation
functions as a puffer for the low temperatures, which cause serious troubles.
By means of these adaptions we have
been able to reduce future damages to
the furniture to an absolute minimum.
Problems resulting from too much or
too little air humidity have been tackled
by means of controlled aeration through
the reconstruction of the construction
temporal windows, which had been destroyed in the 1960s, and the installation
of servomotors, which are controlled by
a system that analyses both, the climate
outside as well as the climate in the rooms.
Le Stanze dei Principi della Fortezza Hohensalzburg ospitano ogni anno 1 milione di visitatori.
Il punto focale dell´intervento è stata la
valorizzazione della materia storica esistente e le Stanze dei Principi sono il punto finale di un viaggio attraverso il passato. Il viaggio inizia nella sala introduttiva
dove un teatro meccanico catapulta in
visitatore nel contesto storico del tardo
Medioevo e della prima Età Moderna.
All´interno delle Stanze dei Principi il visitatore ha la possibilità di raccogliere informazioni approfondite sulla storia dei locali attraverso le
postazioni multimediali qui situate.
L´unicità, l´attrattività e l´aurea emanate dalle Stanze fungono da motore
che spinge il visitatore ad approfondire le sue conoscenze sulla storia e sulle
attuali ricerche eseguite sull´oggetto.
Stimolanti informazioni aggiuntive invitano ad un confronto con il tema.
Per proteggere i pavimenti medievali è stata progettata una passerella per
i visitatori, sul perimetro della quale
sono integrati tutti gli impianti tecnici necessari quali corpi illuminanti, monitor informativi ed indicatori
delle vie di fuga, senza dover in alcun
modo intervenire sulla materia storica.
The State Rooms of the Hohensalzburg Fortress are visited by approximately one million visitors per year.
Visitors are particularly interested in the original furniture which
can be seen in these rooms and
the State Rooms are thus the highlight of a journey to long past times.
This journey starts in a newly created entrance room, where visitors are
brought into the context of the ending Medieval Times and the starting
Modern Ages by a mechanical theatre.
The media stations which have been installed in the State Rooms function as a
central point of profound information
about the vivid history of the rooms. It
is the rooms’ unique and special atmosphere which serves as a vehicle, waking
the visitors’ interest into historical processes and facts, thereby providing the
visitors with background knowledge that
invites visitors to further exploration.
In order to preserve the medieval floors,
a visitor runway has been created, which
also contains all necessary technical and
electrical equipment, thereby hiding it
from the visitors’ eyes and preventing interference between the medieval atmosphere and state of the art technologies.
