will go down in the history of the Grimaldi Group as a golden year one of the best in the history of our company.
Several businesses put in record performances and in a certain sense came of age;
our commercial strategy is successful, and this is now evident for all to see.
The Grimaldi network stretching from the northern Baltic to the west of Africa, the US
east coast, South America and the Middle East becomes more cohesive by the day.
In a sign of the confidence we have in its future, we continue to invest in Helsinkibased subsidiary Finnlines, which enjoyed record profits in the fourth quarter of
last year. We now own the vast majority of Finnlines shares and consider the carrier to be an integral part of the Group rather than an acquisition.
In the Aegean, too, the Group now owns almost all Minoan Lines shares. Thanks
to cost-cutting and hard work the Heraklion-based company has not only survived but also turned a profit in one of Europe’s toughest markets.
In and around Greece, we see further opportunities for serving local residents,
tourists and shippers. As the result of the recent increase by Minoan of its participation in coastal carrier Hellenic Seaways, the Group indirectly controls close
to 44% of the company. If we can find synergies between Hellenic and the wider
Group, everyone will benefit: we will be able to extend our port rotation once more,
while the Greek market will gain access to our worldwide network.
We have expanded rapidly in recent years and will continue to do so. Fifteen newbuildings are due for delivery by 2017. Recent additions to the fleet include the
Grande Luanda, the last of six ro/ro multipurpose vessels built at South Korea’s
Hyundai Mipo for deployment on services linking Northern Europe and West Africa.
In October we took delivery of the “Atlantic Star”, the first of five “G4” con/ro ships
ordered by Atlantic Container Line from Hudong-Honghua Shipbuilding in China,
which joined ACL’s trans-Atlantic service in December. The G4s are by far the
largest vessels of their kind ever built. You can read more about this remarkable
vessel in this edition of G-News.
At the same time, we have not lost sight of our core, home market. Over the New
Year we launched a service between the ports of Livorno and Olbia in northeast
Sardinia using the ro/pax vessel “Zeus Palace” which will be soon replaced by the
“Cruise Olbia”, a modern ferry vessel able to carry 1,600 passengers and 2,400
linear metres of rolling cargo. Moreover, the Group intends to continue expanding
its presence in Sardinia with the introduction of new Civitavecchia-Olbia daily ro/
pax service mid of April. This follows the winter season re-establishment of the
Civitavecchia-Porto Torres and Porto Torres-Barcelona connections, which are
now running throughout the year.
In other news, our customers continue flattering us with public recognition as a
result of the quality service we are proud to offer them. In December, we were
awarded Logistics Supplier of the Year by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles at the company’s Turin headquarters for the second time in three years. This prestigious
award is another proof of the top quality logistics services offered by our Group to
the automotive industry. ACL was presented with American Honda’s distinguished
Premier Partner Award, winning through from a pool of more than 1,000 eligible
suppliers. For the fifth time in seven years, Grimaldi Portugal was awarded ‘Best
Line Portugal-Africa’ by the specialised, local magazine Transportes&Negocios.
Internally, Grimaldi Logistica Genova was named “Best Agent of the Year” for its
work in both Genoa and Savona, where cargo volumes have increased by up
to 50%. The award was handed out in Barcelona during the latest edition of our
yearly “Euro-Med Convention From Land to Sea”, which was on this occasion
attended by 500 delegates, including politicians and regulators from both Spain
and abroad.
FLEET DEVELOPMENT
Grande Luanda delivered
O
n the 26th of November the
“Grande Luanda”, the last in a
series of six ro/ro-multipur-
pose vessels ordered by the Grimaldi
Group at the South Korean shipyards of
Hyundai Mipo, was delivered at Ulsan.
Godmother of the launch ceremony was
Ernesta Scalia, wife of Paolo Satariano,
Corporate Technical Director of the Grimaldi Group. Attending the event were
also: Stefano Attivissimo, Navy Officer of
the Italian Coast Guard, J. Y. Lee, Korea &
Japan country manager of RINA, Thomas
Hoffmann and Felix Weise, Head of Department of DNVGL and Pierluigi Marmo,
Newbuildings Project Manager of the
Grimaldi Group.
Like her sisterships “Grande Lagos”,
“Grande Tema”, “Grande Cotonou”,
“Grande Abidjan” and “Grande Dakar”,
the new vessel has been designed to
achieve significant fuel efficiency and
operational flexibility: with a gross tonnage of 71,543 GT, a deadweight of about
31,000 tonnes and a length of 236 metres,
the vessel has a loading capacity of 5,700
linear metres of rolling cargo or 1,800
TEUS which is 50% higher than the previous generation vessels employed by the
Group. The "Grande Luanda" has also two
cranes on the weather deck lifting containers and general cargo weighing up
to 40 tonnes each.
Following her delivery, the newbuilding
was deployed on the Grimaldi Group
services linking Northern Europe to
West Africa.

Fleet development
“Atlantic Star” joins ACL fleet
The first G4 unit was recently delivered to the Group’s sister company
L
ast October, the m/vessel Atlantic Star, the
first of five “G4” con-ro units ordered by
ACL to Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in
China, was delivered to the Group’s sister company.
Sailed from China, the new vessel officially arrived
in Hamburg, Germany, and joined the Company’s
transatlantic service on the 9th of December 2015.
The m/vessel Atlantic Star is the first vessel of its
kind and the largest con/ro unit ever built, with a
length of 296 metres, a beam of 37.60 metres and a
gross tonnage of 100,430 tonnes. She incorporates
an innovative design that increases capacity without
significantly changing the dimensions of the vessel.
In fact, the “G4” vessels’ lay out was designed and
developed by expert naval architects, gathering
the state-of-the-art of structure, hydrodynamic and
hybrid scrubbing technology. The “G4”s are bigger,
greener and more efficient than their predecessors
4

and will dramatically improve ACL’s competitiveness on
the North Atlantic trades. The container capacity is more
than doubled at 3,800 TEUs, plus 28,900 square meters
of rolling freight and a car capacity of 1,300 units. The ro/
ro ramps are wider and shallower and the ro/ro decks
are higher (up to 7.4 metres) with fewer columns, enabling much easier loading and discharging of oversized
cargo. Also emissions per TEU are reduced by 65%.
The new fleet continues to employ cell-guides on deck,
a feature that will allow ACL to extend its enviable record: Grimaldi’s sister company ships have never lost a
container over the side during the last 30 years.
“The new “G4” fleet will enhance our cargo carrying capabilities, and combined with Grimaldi’s ever-expanding
service network, they will enable ACL to provide even
more services as a high quality container and ro/ro operator for years to come”, stated Andy Abbott, President and
CEO of Atlantic Container Line.
The Atlantic Star was registered in the United Kingdom,
and will be christened next spring in Liverpool. The remaining four “G4” vessels will be delivered during 2016.

New Services
The Group enhances
its services to Sardinia
Launch of the new Livorno-Olbia and Civitavecchia-Olbia lines
for freight and passengers
T
he Grimaldi Group begun the new
year with the announcement of
new initiatives, aiming at further
expanding its maritime links towards
Sardinia: in fact, since the 11th of January,
a new service was launched between the
ports of Livorno and Olbia (north eastern Sardinia), while as from mid-April,
a daily connection between the ports of
Civitavecchia and Olbia will be launched.
Both services are dedicated to the transport of rolling freight and passengers.
Inaugurated last 11th of January with the
deployment of the “Zeus Palace”, the daily Livorno-Olbia link had an immediate
success among passengers and trucking
companies. This persuaded the Grimaldi
Group to further enhance the service
with the replacement of the “Zeus Palace”
with another vessel, the “Cruise Olbia”,
a new generation ro/pax ferry. With a
length of 204 meters, the “Cruise Olbia”
is able to transport 1,600 passengers and
2,400 linear meters of rolling cargo and
accompanying passenger vehicles. The
ferry has 242 comfortable cabins, fitted
with bathroom and air conditioning, for a
total of 834 beds, a self service and an à
la carte restaurant, three bars, a shop, a
children’s play room and a discotheque.
The deployment of the “Cruise Olbia”
will allow the Grimaldi Group to further
improve the quality standards of its onboard services, thus meeting the needs
of its customers. The “top quality” services offered on board will be also combined with a “low cost” pricing policy.
The “Zeus Palace” will, instead, be deployed on the new Civitavecchia-Olbia

service: with a length of 212 meters, the
vessel is capable of carrying 1,500 passengers, 2,500 linear metres of rolling
cargo and accompanying passenger
vehicles. Featuring 202 cabins with
bathroom and air conditioning and 215
reclining seats, the vessel offers passengers various amenities on board such as
a pool, a health centre, a self-service and
an à la carte restaurant, three bars, a video game room, a shop and a children’s
play room.

The environment, policies and technology to achieve greener shipping were a
large focus of the debates: the presidents
of the ports of Barcelona and Valencia,
respectively Sixte Cambra and Aurelio
Martinez, highlighted the external savings generated with the use of maritime
transport and put forward the example of
short sea shipping services. The different level of development between short
sea lines in the north and south of Europe
was also raised, together with the discussions of direct aid.
On this point, José Alberto Carbonell expressed support for the implementation
of the ecobonus as a tool which stimulates demand and therefore does not distort competition. Jose Anselmo affirmed
that shippers are convinced Europe is

East; but Europe would not subsidize
shipowners who do not need funds. Juan
Riva, stated that there is need of public
funds to shipping companies for the further development of Short Sea lines.

A
new intermodal connection,
combining maritime and rail
transport between Greece and
Central Europe, while dedicated to the
transport of trailers, was inaugurated last
November in Venice.
The first train departed from the Motorways of the Sea terminal of Fusina (Porto
Marghera) in Venice to Frankfurt, via the
Brenner Pass. With this new service the
trans-european corridors have their
natural continuation on the Motorways
of the Sea, thanks to the Grimaldi Group
maritime link between Venice and Patras,
highlighting the commercial potential of
the East Mediterranean.
The first train was long over 500 metres,
with 13 wagons: facilitated by Kombiverkehr and commissioned by the transport company Thomaidis, goods are collected in Frankfurt and arrive on Friday,
via the Brenner Pass, in Venice (Fusina)
where they are discharged. From there,
trailers are shipped by the Group’s ro/ro
vessels “Eurocargo Trieste” and “Eurocargo Patrasso”, which operate the three
times a week direct service, between
Venice and Patras.
The two vessels have a capacity of about
220 trailers each. On return, freight originating in Greece, discharged in Fusina
from the Group’s vessels, is loaded, on
Saturday, on the train towards Germany
and from there to other North European
locations. In the policy of further enhancement of this service, there will be
soon two additional departures, which
will link not only Frankfurt but also Koln
with Venice.
