I see creative interaction in the everyday as a method of consciously evolving both the self and the collective, the personal, cultural and, ultimately the planetary psyche. My work extends far beyond my painting practise, investigating visionary solutions on various scales and in multifarious contexts. Over the years I have developed a unique visual language, a holistic working philosophy, and various skills in order to live my path unencumbered by the trappings of modern life. I’ve travelled and lived abroad, studied intensively, transformed landscapes, grown food, and helped individuals and communities empower themselves. My artwork can be seen within the context of my personal experience of course, but it also resonates with the collective cultural-ecological experience, and with archetypal stories. I love to work with metaphor, to understand the layers and inter-connectedness of all things. My paintings and books were mainly figurative until after 2006, using themes such as family, relationship, male and female (yin and yang), energy and consciousness. Since that time, coinciding with the death of my mother, I began to work again with landscapes in my painting, and also began to set my visionary and radical ideas down in words. Following one of the wildest decisions of my life in 2010, to abandon everything and set off in my car for Italy, there was a period where it felt like I might have lost everything… Seeing everything in a positive light, and following a couple of years of extremely hard work and struggle in poverty, I arrived at last with a thriving Arthouse project: my dream. The intense hard work in establishing the arthouse means that my painting has taken a backseat for the past couple of years, but this is changing as I enter a prolific period of creation, now that the arthouse is thriving! Currently, I’m developing my professional profile in Italy, and enjoying the popularity of my TV appearances in the USA. I’m collaborating with other artists, evolving the identity of the Arthouse, and creating new artwork and writing (including a book about how I came to be here). I aim to move back to Scotland in the summer of 2014, to be actively involved in our quest for independence, and am excited to be bringing my travelling studio and gallery on tour with me!
