Italian Sparkling Wines
Every region in Italy produces sparkling wines. The most common and widely recognized is Prosecco, the name of a grape grown in Valdobbiadene
and Conegliano in Veneto. In this case, the bubbles are attained by the Charmat Method, a process that creates a second fermentation in a large
tank before the wine is bottled under pressure. Another popular style is Franciacorta, the name of a small area in Lombardia specializing in
growing Chardonnay, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Nero. The wine is made in the Metodo Classico, or the Champagne Method, where the second
fermentation takes place in the bottle. Although these are the two most famous examples of Italian sparkling wine, other regions also achieve
great results. Whenever possible, we list disgorgement dates.

Champagne
Grower-Producers
Grower-Producer, or Récoltant-Manipulant, is a term used to describe those who bottle wine exclusively from the vineyards they farm themselves.
This practice may not seem like a radical idea, but it is far from the norm in Champagne. In many ways, these wines are the antithesis of most
Champagne on the market. Instead of blending, many producers use only one varietal, from one vineyard or village. In addition to demonstrating a
pure expression of the land, Grower Champagne often offers tremendous value. Whenever possible, we list disgorgement dates.

Négociant-Manipulant
The vast majority of Champagne houses fall under this category. These producers are often much larger than Grower-Producers, and are usually
easily recognizable brands. Although many do own some of the vineyards they source fruit from, Négociant-Manipulants are best known for their
ability to blend Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier from a wide variety of vineyards and vintages to achieve a consistent house style. From
the entry-level bottlings to the tête de cuvées, these Champagnes can be some of the most delicious and compelling wines in the world.

White Wines of Italy
Val d'Aosta
Valle d'Aosta is a small Alpine region in Northern Italy, bordering France and Switzerland high up in the Alps. While it is technically part of
Italy, the feeling here is French. Petite Arvine is the most famous indigenous varietal, and Chardonnay is also widely planted.

Piemonte
Known more for its red wines, Piemonte is home to several indigenous white varietals. Arneis makes soft, floral wines from the sandy Roero hills.
The Cortese grape, famous in the town of Gavi, is often fresh and fruity, and Timorasso yields rich, textural whites from Tortona.

Liguria
Liguria is a small region that stretches from all the way from Tuscany tp the French border. Vermentino and Pigato are the most common white
varietals, and grown near the coast they produce clean, fresh, savory whites that pair wonderfully with seafood and vegetables.

Trentino-Alto Adige
This bilingual Alpine region produces outstanding white wines that range from the noble varietals, such as Chardonnay and Riesling, to
the lesser known but very interesting Muller Thurgau, Gewurztraminer, and Kerner. Chardonnay can achieve a very high level of quality
more similar in style to Burgundy than California in the hands of producers like Lageder and Klaus Gasser at Cantina di Terlano.

Friuli-Venezia-Giulia
In this northeastern region bordering Austria and Slovenia, the hilly zones of Collio and Colli Orientali are producing some Italy's finest whites.
Many varietals are produced here with great success, including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Bianco, and Pinot Grigio. The more intriguing
wines are Tocai (which, beginning with the 2007 vintage, will be known as Friulano), Ribolla Gialla, and the less common Malvasia and Vitovska.

Veneto
Soave Classico is produced in the Soave hills near Verona. The classic blend of Garganega and Trebbiano has recently been modified to include
up to 30% Chardonnay. Additionally, young winemakers are producing wines using solely Garganega, often fermented in barrique.

Toscana
As in Piemonte, the focus is on the red wines in Tuscany, however good results have been achieved from Chardonnay in this very dynamic region.
Vernaccia, grown in the hills near San Gimignano, has a long and vibrant history, and recent changes allow the addition of up to 10% Chardonnay.
Vermentino has blossomed into a very promising varietal that showcases wild herbs and almonds, and is generally fermented in stainless steel tanks.

Marche
Verdicchios from the hills near the Adriatic and from the small Apennine town of Matelica have achieved a great level of quality, and can be
found in two different styles: Light and fresh, and a perfect accompaniment to the local fish dishes, or aged to reveal depth and complexity,
as is the case with Bucci. The Pecorino varietal is usually blended with other local grapes to produce other wines of interest.

Umbria
Umbria is a region much better known for red wine, but several great whites are made. Orvieto (also the name of a popular tourist town)
was traditionally produced in a slightly sweet style, but is now usually a dry wine. In addition to local varietals like Grechetto and Trebbiano,
some wineries have introduced international varietals with great success.

Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is the grape of importance in this region, and the releases from Edoardo Valentini have often been described

All the principal white varietals from this region, including Falanghina, Greco di Tufo, and Fiano di Avellino, have been successfully
revived in recent years and are achieving unprecedented levels of quality. Falanghina shows an aromatic character, while Greco di Tufo
displays minerality, and Fiano di Avellino offers an attractive scent of hazelnuts, pears, and honey. Mastroberardino is primarily responsible
for resurrecting this variety, and other producers, in particular Feudi di San Gregorio, are leading the move toward quality.

Sicilia
Changes in this region have taken place more rapidly than elsewhere in the country, and Sicilia has emerged with a renewed spirit and attitude,
as well as a new found respect for its indigenous varietals. After successful efforts with Chardonnay, Sicily's native white grapes, Catarratto,
Inzolia, Grillo, and Zibibbo, are now receiving the producers' attention. The relocation of vineyards from the very hot valley floor to cooler,
higher elevation sites have allowed the grapes to achieve a more desirable level of acidity, thus ensuring better definition and more character.

Domestic White Wines
Chardonnay
Chardonnay is the most significant white varietal, produced successfully in many parts of the world in many different styles, from the succulent flavors
only found in Burgundy, to the base wine for sparkling wines in Italy and Champagne, and to the ripe and tropical style of Australia and South Africa.
Ever since the now famous 1976 tasting in Paris, when Californian wines beat their French counterparts in a blind tasting, California's white wines
have been considered some of the best in the world. But these wines are still searching for an identity, as can be seen in the changing styles produced
in the state. Evolving from the rich, buttery, and tropical style of the past, we now see a more diligent use of oak and a greater respect for the terroir.

Barbaresco
Until Domizio Cavazza founded the Produtori del Barbaresco in 1894, the wines of Barbaresco, despite significant differences, were all sold as
Barolo. Although roughly one third the size of Barolo, Barbaresco wine styles vary widely between vineyards and producers. The wines of Barbaresco
are generally regarded as being a shade softer and less powerful than those of Barolo, and require only two years of oak aging to Barolo's three.
Important to note about both Barbaresco and Barolo is the difference between traditional and modern producers. Traditionalists despise technology,
employ long fermentations, and age their wines in very large, old casks. Modernists prefer short fermentations, small French barriques, and use
technology to extract more flavor. While these styles are quite different, both create wonderfully distinct wines of great character and depth.

Barbaresco
Bruno Giacosa is an icon in Piemonte, having solidified himself as one of the truly legendary traditional producers of the area. While most choose
to make wines in Barbaresco or Barolo, Giacosa has been releasing great wines from both zones since the 1960's. Though his talents are countless,
his ability to recognize a superb fruit source stands tall above the rest, as he did not buy his first vineyard until 1982. He has made wine from many
of the great vineyards in Barbaresco, but over the years he purchased parcels in Asili and Rabaja, and still purchases fruit from Santo Stefano, which
has historically been his most impressive wine. In particularly exceptional vintages, Giacosa releases certain wines as 'Red Label Riservas,' these
wines combining richness, complexity, and power with incerdible elegance and finesse.

Barbaresco
Angelo Gaja changed winemaking in Piemonte forever, first in 1967 by becoming one of the first winemakers to release vineyard designated
Barbarescos, and again in 1969 when he began experimenting with French barrique aging. At the time, his wines were decidedly modern, as
they were and still are fermented in stainless steel for a relatively short three weeks, then aged in barriques for 12 months before finishing in oak
casks for another year. Gaja's Barbaresco combines bright fruit with ageworthy structure.

Angelo Gaja
Gaja makes three single-vineyard wines, each with unique characteristics. Sorì San Lorenzo, in the Secondine vineyard, was first released in 1967,
and is known to be the most austere and powerful of the cru wines. 1970 marked the first vintage of Sorì Tildin, Gaja's plot in the Roncagliette cru,
which combines great structure and finesse. Costa Russi, contiguous to Sorì Tildin, is the most round and elegant of the cru wines. Starting in
1996 all his single-vineyard Barbarescos are blended with 5-8% Barbera in order to strengthen the wines' overall acidity. Doing this prevents the
wines from bearing the "Barbaresco" designation, as they are required by law to be 100% Nebbiolo. Gaja also makes a Cabernet Sauvignon called
Darmagi, which means 'what a shame.' These words were uttered by Angelo's father when he ripped up old Nebbiolo vines to plant the Cabernet.

Barolo
Many agree that Italy's most important red wine is named after the small town of Barolo in the Langhe hills. A wine of great tradition with a
somewhat troubled past, it is now produced with modern methods that yield a fresher, cleaner, and more balanced wine. Five villages produce
distinct styles: Barolo and La Morra are most delicate and perfumed, Monforte and Serralunga are richer and more structured, while the wines of
Castiglione Falletto strike a balance between the two. Recently, newer styles have emerged that can be classified as Traditionalist or Modernist,
and the list is presented following the same criteria. Desipte their significant difference, both styles are nonetheless representative of the region.

Barolo
Bartolo Mascarello was one of the great traditional winemakers of Barolo. The winery was founded in 1920 by Bartolo's father, who began
purchasing parcels of important vineyards, most notably Cannubi and Rocche dell'Annunziata. The Barolo has always been a multi-vineyard
blend. The wines are co-fermented in cement for around one month, then aged in large, old botti for two and a half years. These wines are
the essence of classic Barolo, and while approachable young, they are most expressive and ethereal after twenty to fifty years.

Barolo
Giuseppe Rinaldi is one of the legends of traditional winemaking in Barolo. He owns land in four vineyards, all of which are good enough
to be vineyard designates, but in sticking with tradition, he chooses to blend them instead. The elegance of Cannubi San Lorenzo is matched
with the power of Ravera, and the classic dark fruit of Brunate is balanced by the muscular frame of Le Coste. Written by wine critic Antonio
Galloni in 2008, this quote best describes 'Beppe' Rinaldi's style; "Although Rinaldi has changed out a few barrels recently, the only
concession to anything resembling modernity is an old-fashioned rotary telephone, which seems to genuinely annoy him each time it rings."

Barolo
Since 1970, Giuseppe Mascarello's Barolo Monprivato has been one of the most prized wines in the Langhe. Monprivato is considered by many
to be the best vineyard in Castiglione, and along with Giacomo Conterno's Cascina Francia and Bruno Giacosa's Falletto, one of the few monopole
vineyards in Barolo. The wine is absolutely traditional, and offers a consistent balance of beautiful aromatics and elegance without sacrificing
structure and power. In 1993, a small subplot of the vineyard planted to the Michet clone of Nebbiolo was vinified seperately as a Riserva and named
Ca' d'Morissio. Released only in vintages where it is distinctive from Monprivato, it has become one of the elite wines of Barolo.

Barolo
Aldo Conterno is the son of the great Giacomo Conterno, and the brother of Giovanni. He worked with his father and brother for years, but
decided to create a winery of his own in 1969. He purchased a farm in the Monforte zone of Barolo, and has been making wine with his sons
in this area ever since. Monforte is known for the famous Bussia zone, an area of vineyards known to make structured and age-worthy Barolos
that manage to offer elegance and approachability not commonly found in these great wines. The entry-level Barolo is a blend of younger
vines. Cicala, Colonnello, and Romirasco are all separate single vineyards. 'Granbussia' is a Riserva made in only the very best vintages.
The wines are made in a traditional style, except for the use of rotofermenters, which help to extract more color and flavor from the grapes.

Barolo
Monforte d'Alba
Elio Grasso is a small, family-owned winery in Monforte d'Alba. The Gavarini vineyard is a monopole of theirs, and in great vintages it produces
two Barolos. 'Vigna Chiniera' is the highest part of the vineyard and the soil contains more limestone, so the wine tends to be more focused and
mineral-driven. In only the best vintages 'Runcot' is made from the lower part of the vineyard where the fruit is more round and powerful. This
wine is aged exclusively in French barriques. In addition to the Gavarini vineyard, the Grassos own part of the famous Ginestra cru. These
two Barolos are made in a more traditional style, as they are aged in large old oak barrels. Elio Grasso Barolos are lways incredibly
well-balanced, combining immense power with graceful elegance.

Barolo
Bruno Giacosa's Barolos are some of the most amazing traditionally-made wines anywhere in the world. His ability to craft legendary wines from
a plethora of vineyards dispersed across the communes of Barolo sets him apart from much of the competition. Since the mid-1990's, Giacosa
has made Barolo only from his own Falletto vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, with the exception of the Croera vineyard in La Morra which was
introduced only in 2004. The wines Giacosa made from Collina Rionda in the 1970's and 1980's are some of his most highly renowned.

Barolo
The wines of Giacomo Conterno are some of the most traditional and long-lived in Piemonte. Roberto Conterno, Giacomo's grandson, currently
makes the wine, but stylistically, little has changed over the generations. Purchased in 1974 and first bottled in 1978, Cascina Francia is the name
of the 34.6 acre vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba, from which only two Barolos are produced: Cascina Francia and Monfortino. The latter is a blend of
the vineyard's best subplots, and is only released in outstanding vintages. Both are aged in large, old Slavonian oak casks, Cascina Francia for four
years, and Monfortino for a minimum of seven. The wines can be tannic and austere when young, but given at least ten years, they consistently
develop into profoundly complex, glorious examples of the brilliance Nebbiolo can achieve.

Only produced in the best vintages, Monfortino can be a difficult wine to understand. Often remarkably approachable when young, the wine
seems to go into a period of dormancy, which, depending on the vintage, can last several decades. At its best, Monfortino is a wine of immense
power, longevity and grace, and can hold its own not only with the best of Italy, but with the best wines of the world.

Angelo Gaja
First released in 1988, 'Sperss' is a multi-vineyard Barolo from Serralunga. Sperss means 'nostalgia' in Piemontese dialect, referring to the
Barolos Angelo's father made in the 1950's 'Conteisa' is single-vineyard Barolo coming from the famed Cerequio cru in La Morra. This wine
was first bottled in 1996, which was also the year Gaja stopped labelling his cru wines as Barolo and Barbaresco. 'Conteisa' means 'quarrel',
referencing the historic dispute between the communes of Barolo and La Morra over the Cerequio land.

Roero & Nebbiolo d'Alba
Just across the Tanaro River from Barolo and Barbaresco is a zone called Roero. Also 100% Nebbiolo, Roero differs from the two more famous
appellations because of soil. South of the river the soil is dominated by clay and limestone, but in Roero, it is mostly sand. As a result, the wines
are usually more aromatic and elegant, possessing softer tannins than Barolo and Barbaresco.

Barbera d'Alba
This quintessential Italian varietal, grown in many of the Northern regions, find its best home in the Langhe area. It produces deeply colored
red wines showcasing dark fruit flavors, particularly cherries, raspberries, and blackberries. While it has very delicate tannins, its relatively
high acidity makes it very adept to the utilization of oak, which is occassionally overused. In Alba, Barbera is often planted in better locations,
sometimes in sites that could be designated for Nebbiolo, while the landscape in the Asti area is much more open. As in Barolo and Barbaresco,
styles can vary greatly, as many producers in both areas are moving toward the use of oak for a more polished and modern style.

Dolcetto
One of Italy's most charming native varietals, Dolcetto is the wine drunk daily in Piemonte, and is virtually exclusive to this region. The majority
of Dolcettos are produced in the zone of Alba, but because of its popularity it is planted in seven districts, with the best results found in Alba and
Dogliani. Dolcetto d'Alba is generally more delicate and perfumed than the intense and concentrated version from Dogliani. While the use of oak
has been attempted over the years, the best Dolcettos are the pure, oak-free, early-drinking styles with their vibrant fruit.

Trentino-Alto Adige
The northern part of the region that borders Austria, known as Alto Adige, is locally called Sudtirol. It is home to indigenous varietals, such as
Schiava and Lagrein. Schiava is a pleasing, fruity red, while Lagrein is black and chocolatey, with a scent of plums, and bright acidity. The southern
part of the region is Trentino, where the grape of choice is Teroldego, which features deep red fruit with scents of berries, tar and wild cherries.

Veneto
These wines are produced near the town of Verona, and use of varietals indigenous to the area. Until recently, Corvina and Corvinone were regarded
as the same varietal. Corvinone is now used as a complementary grape by some producers. Valpolicella and Amarone use the same blend of varietals,
but the grapes for the production of Valpolicella are not partially dried as they are for Amarone. Grapes destined to become Amarone are picked and
laid out on mats, where they shrivel and remain for months after harvest. The "appassimento," or drying process, takes place indoors with good
ventilation to prevent the growth of mold. Good Amarone is like no other wine in the world, with scents of cherry, dark fruits, and aging exotic spices.

Emilia e Romagna
Sangiovese is the grape of choice in the eastern part of the region, while Lambrusco and Bonarda are more prevalent in the western part. Quality
is on the rise, but production has been dominated by large cooperatives emphasizing quantity over quality. Changes are occurring throughout the
region with good results from small producers trying to emulate the success of Sangiovese in Tuscany.

Toscana
Brunello di Montalcino
Without a doubt Tuscany's most prestigious and expensive wine, Brunello can be traced to the town of Montalcino, where the Biondi-Santi family
created a clone of Sangiovese and named it Brunello, or "the little brown one." This part of Tuscany has witnessed a real renaissance in winemaking,
and Brunello has been at its center. The number of producers more than doubled, bringing to the consumer newer wines, very often from young
vineyards, and still trying to find a niche among the many different styles. One thing that's remained constant is the high price Brunello has always
demanded. Known for its richness, dark color, and its incredible aging potential, this wine can be spectacular when all elements are present, or
disappointing if some are lacking. Brunello di Montalcino is definitely one of Italy's most important wines, and frequently among the best.

Brunello di Montalcino
Valdicava Brunellos are some of the most dark and intensely-concentrated wines in Montalcino. Proprietor Vincenzo Abbruzzese attributes
this to the vineyards, which are planted at a very high density and are cropped to tiny yields. There is very little work done in the winery,
where the wines are aged mostly in large casks. Only three wines are released. In addition to a Rosso di Montalcino and a Brunello di Montalcino,
Valdicava makes a Brunello Riserva from their Madonna del Piano vineyard. The Brunellos show best between 10-15 years after the vintage

Rosso di Montalcino
Rosso di Montalcino is either Sangiovese Grosso grown outside the Brunello appellation, or declassified Brunello. Some producers make Rosso
as a lighter, fresher alternative to Brunello, while others opt for a more powerful style that more closely resembles Brunello itself.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
This "Noble Wine" has been produced in the hills around the town of Montepulciano for centuries. It is made from the Sangiovese
grape, locally known as Prugnolo Gentile, with an allowance for up to 20% of other varietals authorized by the province of Siena.
At its best it combines the structure and the power found in Brunello di Montalcino with the finesse of the best Chianti Classico.

Chianti Classico
Chianti Classico is a well defined area in central Tuscany where the most famous of Italian red wines are produced. Wines produced outside this area
are labelled simply Chianti. Recent changes in government regulations require that wine is made with 100% Sangiovese, with the flexibility to add up
to 20% of international varietals, therefore allowing many of the now famous "Super Tuscan" wines to be classified as legitimate Chiantis. Because
the new regulations are less restrictive than in the past, the style among the producers is very different, particularly when affected with Cabernet
Sauvignon or Syrah. Nevertheless, these wines are more reliable and better made than ever before, beginning a new era for this storied region.

Maremma
The winemaking history of this western part of Tuscany, facing the Tirreno Sea, is very new, and void of any traditions. The climate is ideal
for growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. Winemakers are free to experiment without the boundaries imposed by traditions. These
wines represent a newer and more international style of Italian winemaking, as they are very flamboyant, seductive, and pleasing.

In the past, this Adriatic region has been better known for the white wines it's produced, but the quality of its red wines is increasing every year.
Montepulciano and Sangiovese are the grapes of choice, often fashioned in a modern style with the assistance of Cabernet and Merlot.

Umbria
The most exciting wines from this landlocked region come from the town of Montefalco. Thanks to the hard work and perseverance of Marco
Caprai, the reputation of the local varietal, Sagrantino, has been restored to the highest level of its history. Sagrantino is a strong, tannic grape
that requires a good dose of oak and plenty of aging to smooth the intense tannins and jammy character. Today, Caprai is the benchmark for
Sagrantino, producing magnificent, intense red wines with a polished and more elegant structure.

Abruzzo
Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Without a doubt, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is the most important example of this varietal. However, lack of direction has been a persistent
problem. Consequently, this wine can be all over the map. From insipid or rustic to massive and very focused, from very inexpensive to very
expensive, navigating through the production of this wine can be challenging. A new appellation, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane,
recently emerged close to the Adriatic Sea in the Teramo hills, and is expected to deliver a distinctive new style of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

Lazio has emerged as one of the better areas in Italy for Bordeaux vcarietals, especially Merlot. The indigenous Cesanese makes elegant and
earthy wines, while Giacchè, an ancient varietal that disappeared for many years but was recently rediscovered, is a bigger and bolder alternative.

Campania
Aglianico, the noble grape of the south, is produced in several regions with great success. Its best interpretation is found in the zone around the
commune of Taurasi. The Mastroberardino family deserves credit for discovering that grapes planted in the upper slopes of Irpinia would deliver
a better wine, which is how Taurasi was conceived. There are several Aglianico appellations, but the success of this varietal begins and ends with
Taurasi. The wines are rich, with loads of dark fruit like plum, raspberry and blackberry, with hints of leather, coffee and tobacco. As in many
other parts of the country, new oak found its way into the area, and an appropriate dosage will smooth out the wine and soften Aglianico's tannins.

The Negroamaro grape, grown on traditional bush-trained vines in the Salento peninsula, provides Puglia's best wines. Grape cultivation has
always been focused on large production of cheap, tannic wines, but recent changes and investments in the cellars have helped to raise quality.

Sicilia
Sicily was perhaps the first of the southern regions to ignite the wine revolution that has drastically changed the landscape of southern Italian wines.
Rich with native varietals, from the most popular Nero d'Avola to Frappato, Perricone, and Nerello Mascalese, producers are now working very
diligently to respect these native grapes while setting new standards in research and development of the land.

Sardegna
Located in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, Sardenga has been influenced by many cultures throughout its history. Grape varietals like
Carignano (Carignan) and Cannonau (Grenache) came from Spain and France while the origins of Bovale, Monica, and Pascale are less clear.
The wines tend to be ripe and powerful thanks to Sardegna's warm and sunny climate. They are vaguely reminiscent of Southern Rhone reds.

Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is considered by many to be the world's greatest varietal. Often thriving in cooler climates, Pinot Noir is known for its beautiful core of
cherry fruit, gentle structure, and racy acidity. California and Oregon have experienced great success in many different microclimates. From the
warmth of the Santa Lucia Highlands and parts of the Russian River Valley, to the marginal areas along the Sonoma Coast and in the Willamette
Valley, domestic Pinot Noirs offer an endless array of styles and flavors, and have proved able to stand with the world's best.

Grenache & Blends
Grenache is most prominent in the Southern Rhone Valley of France. Rarely vinified on its own, it is usually blended with Syrah, Mourvèdre
and many other varietals. Grenache is classically grown in warm climates, and offers ripe red cherry fruit and spicy white pepper aromatics.

Syrah
Traditionally from France's Northern Rhone Valley, Syrah is thriving all over California. Flavors like blackberry, leather, smoked meats, and bacon
fat are typical. Warm climate Syrah tends to emphasize dark fruit, while cooler areas showcase the rustic, gamey flavors Syrah is justifiably famous for.

Cabernet Franc & Merlot
On the Left Bank of Bordeaux, Cabernet Franc and Merlot are usually blended with Cabernet Sauvignon to provide an aromatic elegance and
a supple texture. On the Right Bank, the two are blended together to make some of the world's most sought-after wines. As is often the case,
California is a melting pot, offering examples of both styles, as well as its own pure expressions of each varietal. Cabernet Franc is a more subtle
varietal, and provides more savory flavors, like tobacco, bell pepper, and violets. Merlot makes more opulent, fruit-driven wines, usually with
concentrated dark fruit and a very smooth, silky texture.

Cabernet Sauvignon & Blends
Cabernet Sauvignon is the dominant varietal in many of the world's greatest wines, and is often supplemented with small amounts of Cabernet
Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Known for dark fruit and firm tannins, Cabernet Sauvignon has what it takes to age very well. Wines from the
Left Bank of Bordeaux are a perfect example of this, and many California Cabernets focus on structure and balance in an attempt to emulate this
style. Other producers choose to embrace the warmth of our state, making ripe, concentrated wines that are certainly more crowd-pleasing,
but perhaps not as ageworthy. Regardless of style, California has proved itself to be one of the best places in the world for Cabernet Sauvignon.
