council tax, environmental health, grants, planning and recycling and waste collection, as well as many others. Your councillors Tandridge District Council has 42 councillors, elected to look after the interests of the district. Currently 34 Conservative, 6 Liberal Democrat and 2 Independent councillors represent 20 wards. You’ll find their details on the centre pages of this booklet. What do councillors do? Councillors represent their constituents and decide the priorities and objectives which the Council will pursue, as well as the amount the Council spends. The Council has a Leader, a councillor from the ruling party or administration, who acts as principal spokesman on council issues and policies and works closely with the Chief Executive. Do councillors get paid? Councillors don’t get paid, but they can claim an allowance. Details of expenses are published every year and are available on www.tandridge.gov.uk. What council meetings are there? The municipal year starts in May, with the election of the Chairman of the Council and chairmen of committees, as well as determining committee membership. There are eight committees: Community Services, Housing, Licensing, Overview & Scrutiny, Planning, Planning Policy, Resources and Standards, which meet regularly. The year is divided into four committee cycles and at the end of each one, a full council meeting is held, which all councillors are invited to attend. Can I attend council meetings? You can attend any committee or Council meeting. Although the public can be excluded for any item of business which discloses confidential information, most issues are discussed in public. When and where are meetings held? Council and Committee meetings are held at the Council Offices in Station Road East, Oxted starting at 7.30pm. For a list of dates please call 01883 732975, e-mail [email protected] or visit www.tandridge.gov.uk. How do I get a copy of the agenda? Agendas are available from the Council Offices, Oxted or local libraries at least five days before the meeting, as well as on our website www.tandridge.gov.uk. Minutes of meetings can also be inspected. Can I speak at a committee? You can speak at a Planning Committee in support of, or against a planning application, or submit questions and petitions to other council meetings.
