I
l Pitigliani Kolno’a Festival festeggia il suo decimo anno. Un traguardo importante e ci
auguriamo di raggiungerne tanti altri in futuro.
Il PKF ha confermato in questi anni l’interesse del pubblico internazionale per il cinema
di argomento ebraico in generale e per il cinema israeliano in particolare, e tanti sono stati
i premi che quest’ultimo ha ottenuto in campo internazionale ritagliandosi una posizione di
grande prestigio.
Abbiamo sempre cercato, come cerchiamo tutt’ora, di tracciare un percorso alla scoperta delle
novità, della storia e dei personaggi che costellano la cinematografia israeliana ed ebraica sfor­
zandoci di dare agli spettatori un’immagine della complessità del mondo ebraico e di Israele.
Anche quest’anno, con rinnovato entusiasmo e impegno, portiamo all’attenzione degli spetta­
tori una rosa di film in cui ci sono molte novità ed anche alcune opere ormai diventate “clas­
siche”, presentate nelle scorse edizioni del Festival.
È proprio al pubblico del PKF che vanno i nostri ringraziamenti, per averci seguito e sostenuto
in questi dieci anni, con l’augurio di buona visione e l’auspicio di poter continuare a presen­
tarvi, negli anni a venire, film importanti, belli, o, semplicemente, che riteniamo “da vedere”.

I
n 2015, the Pitigliani Kolno’a Festival celebrates its tenth edition. This is an important
milestone and we hope to pass many more in the future.
Over these years, PKF has confirmed that international audiences are interested in films
about Jewish issues in general and Israeli cinema in particular. Indeed, films made in
Israel have won many prizes worldwide, carving out a very prestigious position in the global
market.
We always try to discover the new, illustrating stories and personalities from the Israeli and
Jewish film industries. In doing so, we strive to give our audiences a picture that reveals the
complexity of the Jewish world and Israeli society.
Once again, though with renewed enthusiasm and commitment, we offer the public a lineup
of films with many novelties, together with a few works that have now become “classics”,
screened at previous editions of the Festival.
We want to thank the PKF audience for having followed and supported us over the past decade. Enjoy the films in this 10th anniversary programme. And in the years to come, we hope
to continue to offer you films that are important, striking or those we simply consider “worth
watching”.

Gli ospiti
GADY CASTEL
Nato in Israele da una famiglia di origini ferraresi, Gady Castel
inizia la sua carriera di produttore e regista cinematografico dopo
un periodo di studio e lavoro in Italia tra il 1967 e il 1972. Nomi­
nato Cavaliere della Repubblica italiana nel 2011, è stato promo­
tore della miniserie TV Perlasca, un eroe italiano. Attualmente
riveste la carica di Presidente e direttore artistico di Jewish Eye,
Festival Internazionale del cinema ebraico di Ashkelon.
Castel ha diretto e prodotto molti film tra cui Rinascere in Puglia, presentato al PKF 2015.
Born in Israel to a family originating from the Italian city of
Ferrara, Gady Castel started his career as a film director and
producer after a period studying and working in Italy, between
1967 and 1972. Appointed as a ‘Cavaliere della Repubblica
italiana’ (Knight of the Italian Republic) in 2011, he was the promoter of the television miniseries
Perlasca: The Courage of a Just Man. He currently holds the position of President and Artistic director
of Jewish Eye, the Ashkelon international festival of Jewish film. Castel has directed and produced
many films, including Rinascere in Puglia, presented at PKF 2015.
ALBERTO CAVIGLIA
Nato a Roma nel 1984, si laurea in Lettere e Filosofia con una
tesi su David Cronenberg e frequenta corsi presso la “New York
Film Academy” e la “London Film School”. Lavora come as­
sistente alla regia e collabora con Ferzan Ozpetek a partire dal
2006. Coltiva negli anni la passione per la fotografia che lo porta
a diplomarsi nel 2011 presso la Scuola Romana di Fotografia.
Al PKF 2015 presenta Pecore in erba, sua opera prima che af­
fronta per la prima volta il tema dell’antisemitismo con la satira.
Il film è stato selezionato alla 72a Mostra del cinema di Venezia
nella categoria Orizzonti.
Born in Rome in 1984, he graduated in the Humanities, writing a thesis on David Cronenberg. After attending courses at
the New York Film Academy and the London Film School, from
2006, he started working as an assistant director, collaborating with Ferzan Ozpetek. Over the years,
he cultivated a passion for photography and in 2011 graduated in the craft from the Scuola Romana di
Fotografia e Cinema.
At PKF2015, Alberto presents his feature debut Pecore in erba, which for the first time takes a satirical
approach to the subject of anti-Semitism. The film was selected for the Orizzonti section at the 72nd
Venice Film Festival.

DANIELE DI NEPI
Nato e cresciuto a Roma, Daniele Di Nepi si avvicina dopo
aver frequentato un corso di cinema con il regista Francesco
Felli. In seguito al conseguimento della laurea in Scienze Po­
litiche, nel 2011 si iscrive alla New York Film Academy che
gli permette di girare i primi due cortometraggi. Daniele ora
sta concludendo un MFA all’Università di Tel Aviv in regia e
produzione, lavora come fotografo e video-maker freelance
collaborando, tra gli altri, con un canale televisivo sportivo
israeliano ed il museo di YadVashem; Al PKF 2015 presenta il
suo ultimo cortometraggio Family Picture.
Born and raised in Rome, Daniele Di Nepi entered the world
of film after attending a cinema course with director Francesco Felli. After graduating in Political Sciences, in 2011 he
enrolled in the New York Film Academy, which allowed him to shoot his first two short films. Daniele
is now completing an MA in direction and production at Tel Aviv University. He works as a stills photographer and a freelance video-maker for clients including a television sports channel in Israel and
the YadVashem Museum. At PKF 2015, Daniele is presenting his latest short film, Family Picture.
ORI GRUDER
Ori Gruder, conosciuto anche come “Or Yashar” (che signifi­
ca “luce dritta”), è uno sceneggiatore, regista e direttore della
fotografia. Nato in Israele nel 1970 dopo un servizio milita­
re come fotografo, si è iscritto al dipartimento di Film & TV
School alla Tel Aviv University, per laurearsi con lode nel 1998.
Dopo essere diventato religioso, Ori ha approfondito i suoi stu­
di sull’ebraismo, a cui dedica il suo cinema. I suoi progetti si
sono aggiudicati premi e sono stati presentati in molti festival
internazionali. Al PKF2015 Gruder presenta il suo ultimo do­
cumentario Sacred Sperm.
Ori Gruder, also known as Or Yashar (meaning ‘direct light’
in Hebrew) is a script writer, director and cinematographer.
Born in Israel in 1970, after military service as a photographer,
he enrolled in the Film & TV School at Tel Aviv University,
graduating with honours in 1998. As an adult, Ori became very religious, intensifying his studies into
Judaism.
He explores this area in his films, taking a detailed look at many aspects of the religion. His works
have won prizes and been screened at many international festivals. At PKF2015, Gruder is presenting
his latest documentary, Sacred Sperm.

NADAV LAPID
Nadav Lapid, è un regista, sceneggiatore e scrittore. Ha studia­
to filosofia all’unversità di Tel Aviv, letteratura francese a Parigi
e cinema alla Sam Spiegel film School di Gerusalemme.
Il suo primo lungometraggio, Policeman, si è aggiudicato il pre­
mio della giuria al festival di Locarno ed è stato scelto dalla
critica americana come uno dei dieci migliori film del 2011.
La prima internazionale del suo secondo multipremiato lun­
gometraggio The Kindergarten Teacher (presentato al PKF
2015) ha avuto luogo al festival di Cannes: il film è stato poi
presentato a più di centocinquanta festival internazionali.
Nadav lavora attualmente sul suo terzo film Micro Robert una
produzione francese ambientata a Parigi.
Nadav Lapid a film director and a writer, born in Tel Aviv, studied philosophy at the University of Tel-Aviv, French literature in Paris, and cinema in Sam Spiegel film
school. His first feature, Policeman, won the jury award at the Locarno Film Festival 2011, and was
selected in the American critics polls as one of the best films of 2011.
His second feature film, The Kindergarten Teacher, premiered in Cannes film festival. The film won
since then more than ten international awards, and was screened in more than 150 international festivals. Nadav is currently working on his third feature film Micro Robert, a French production that will
take place in Paris.
ISRAEL CESARE MOSCATI
Israel Cesare Moscati nasce da una famiglia ebraica residente
nel ghetto di Roma. I nonni, gli zii materni e paterni non faranno
mai più ritorno dai campi di sterminio. Il silenzio dei genitori
sulla Shoah, che vivrà durante l’infanzia, lo trasformerà incon­
sciamente nel suo animo come un fantasma.
Al PKF 2015 presenta I figli della Shoah, documentario da lui
scritto che avrà un notevole successo internazionale.
He was born in Rome in 1951, into a family of Roman Jews living in the ghetto area of the city. His grandparents and aunts on
his mother’s and father’s side had never returned from the concentration camps. His parents never spoke about the Holocaust
as he was growing up, and unconsciously, this silence turned
the tragedy into a kind of inner ghost. After a long period of
analysis, in 2015 he transformed this interiorised ghost into a life-affirming project that he pitched to
RAI Cinema. The result was the documentary I Figli della Shoah, which went on to enjoy significant
success internationally.
He has another documentary due out in 2016 entitled Suonate ancora, a follow up to the first. It is also
produced by RAI Cinema.

GHILA VALABREGA
Ghila Valabrega nasce a Milano alla fine degli anni ‘80. A 19
anni frequenta un Master a Parigi in Illustrazione e Cinema d’Ani­
mazione, che completerà a New York dove si fermerà per 5 anni.
Grazie all’incontro con Moma Mrdakovic, assistente alla regia
si Kusturica per oltre 15 anni, inizia a lavorare come scenografa
per alcuni film tra cui Il turno di notte lo fanno le stelle regia di
Edoardo Ponti, decide di andare a Los Angeles per frequentare un
Master in Regia Cinematografica. Al PKF 2015 presenta la sua
opera prima Felice nel Box.
Ghila Valabrega was born in Milan at the end of the 1980s. At
the age of 19, she moved to Paris to study painting and illustration, eventually completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in
Illustration and Animation in New York, where she stayed for five
years. Thanks to a meeting with Moma Mrdakovic, Emir Kusturica’s assistant director for more than 15
years, Ghila started working as an art director for several films, including The Nightshift Belongs to the
Stars by Edoardo Ponti. She then decided to move to Los Angeles to study for a Masters in Film Direction. At PKF 2015, Ghila is presenting her first feature, Felice nel Box.

I
n una casa di riposo di Gerusalemme, Yehezkel, che ha
settantacinque anni, decide di aiutare il suo migliore ami­
co malato terminale Max a morire in pace. Malgrado sua
moglie Levana sia contraria, l’ingegnere in pensione svi­
luppa il progetto di un macchinario per l’eutanasia e lo fa
con l’aiuto di Yana, moglie di un esperto veterinario, il Dott.
Daniel, e di Raffi, l’ex poliziotto che da il via alla missione
segreta. Il piano viene realizzato con successo, tanto che la
voce si è sparsa e cominciano ad arrivare altre richieste di
simili missioni….
Il film si è aggiudicato quattro premi all’Accademia del ci­
nema israeliano fra i quali il premio come migliore attore a
Ze’ev Revach, al Festival di Haifa 2014 tocca a Levana Fin­
kelstein il premio alla migliore attrice. Al Valladolid Interna­
tional Film Festival 2014, Levana Finkelstein e Aliza Rosen
vengonio premiate.

n a Jerusalem retirement home, 75-year old
Yehezkel decides to help his best friend Max,
who is terminally ill, to die in peace. Even
though Yehezkel’s wife Levana is opposed to
the idea, the retired engineer draws up plans for
a self-euthanasia machine, built with the help of
Max’s wife Yana as well as doctor Daniel, a professional vet and Raffi, a former policeman who gives the go ahead for the secret mission. The plan is
successful, so much so that rumours begin to spread and other similar requests start coming in….
The film won four Israeli Film Academy prizes including Best Actor for Ze’ev Revach, while Levana
Finkelstein came away with the Best Actress prize
from the 2014 Haifa Film Festival. The Valladolid International Film Festival 2014 awarded both
Levana Finkelstein and Aliza Rosen for their performances.

inea diretta per rifugiati e immigrati è un
centro non governativo di volontari a Tel
Aviv, che dedica la sua attività a difendere i
diritti di chi trova rifugio in Israele e di chi
decide di andare a viverci per trovare lavoro clande­
stino. Il centro offre servizi legali a immigrati clan­
destini, garantisce visite nei centri di detenzione e
promuove attività politica.
I documentaristi hanno seguito da vicino, proprio
Linea diretta, per capire meglio come funziona
un’arena democratica ONG di questo tipo e quale è
la realtà che emerge da questa prospettiva.

T
he Hotline for Refugees and Migrants is a volunteer-run NGO based in Tel Aviv. It is dedicated to promoting the rights of refugees and
undocumented migrant workers in Israel. The
NGO’s work includes providing legal services for illegal immigrants, undertaking weekly visits to detention centers and carrying out public policy activities.
The documentary makers examined the NGO’s work
from close at hand, from the Hotline centre itself, to
understand how this kind of NGO functions in the
democratic arena and revealing how reality looks
from this perspective.
Hotline won the Best Documentary Film award at the
Jerusalem Film Festival 2015.

Kicking out Shoshana
A
mi Shoshan è la stella del club “Figli di
Gerusalemme”, una squadra di calcio
conosciuta per i suoi tifosi violenti, raz­
zisti e omofobi. Una sera Shoshan flirta
con una bella donna che, sfortunatamente per lui,
è l’amante del boss mafioso “Blackie” Bokovza.
Per punizione, Ami dovrà indire una conferenza
stampa e dichiarare pubblicamente di essere gay,
suscitando lo sgomento tra i tifosi e i suoi com­
pagni di squadra. Con sua grande sorpresa, però,
egli diventerà il simbolo della comunità LGBT di
Gerusalemme e il suo scaltro agente, Dedé, cer­
cherà di approfittarne.
Kicking out Shoshana è una commedia brillante
che prende di mira molti stereotipi, agenti sporti­
vi, paparazzi, ebrei ultraortodossi, travestiti, drag
queen, omofobi – nel segno di una nuova tolle­
ranza. Gli interpreti sono Oshri Cohen – visto in
due splendidi film sul dramma della guerra, Be­
aufort e Lebanon, Leone d’Oro a Venezia – e Gal
Gadot attrice e modella, protagonista della serie
“Fast and Furious”.

A
mi Shoshan is the star player in the
“Figli di Gerusalemme club”, a football
team known for its violent, racist and homophobic fans. One evening, Shoshan
flirts with a beautiful woman, who - unfortunately
for him – turns out to be the lover of mafia boss
“Blackie” Bokovza. As a punishment, Ami must
call a press conference and publically declare
he is gay, which causes consternation among the
fans and his fellow team members. However, his
big coming out surprise will lead him to become
a hero of Jerusalem’s gay community, and his
cunning agent, Dedé, will try to take advantage
of the situation.
Kicking Out Shoshana is a biting comedy that
takes a sideswipe at many stereotypes – sporting agents, the paparazzi, ultra-orthodox Jews,
transvestites, drag queens, homophobes – all
in the name of a new tolerance. Cast members
include Oshri Cohen (seen in two excellent war
dramas, Beaufort and Lebanon: The Soldier’s
Journey, Golden Lion winner at Venice) and actress and model Gal Gadot, star from the “Fast
and Furious” series.

U
na maestra d’asilo scopre tra i suoi allievi un bam­
bino poeta. Essendo amante di poesia e un po’ poe­
tessa lei stessa, si sente obbligata a salvare dalla
banalità questa creatura dall’animo sensibile che rischia
di perdersi in un mondo che non ama gli artisti e in cui
le persone più sensibili finiscono sempre sconfitte. La
missione trasforma la maestra in una “Don Chisciotte al
femminile” che tenta di salvare il mondo con la poesia, e
scuote un bambino pensieroso che non ha mai chiesto di
essere salvato.
Il secondo lungometraggio di Nadav Lapid ha girato il
mondo aggiudicandosi il premio della critica al Jeru­
salem Film Festival 2014, il premio al Miglior Film al
Seville European Film Festival 2014 e il grande premio
al Concorso Internazionale Nuovi Talenti al Taipei Film
Festival 2015.

n’unità di giovani soldatesse dell’esercito
israeliano. Nell’ufficio delle risorse umane,
in una base militare nel lontano deserto, le
“missioni” consistono soltanto nel servire
caffè agli ufficiali uomini, a distruggere documenti
di carta, giocare al computer e contare i giorni che
mancano alla fine della leva. Tra una “missione” e
l’altra, e per non morire di noia, le giovani reclute
si innamorano, si stuzzicano, fanno baruffa e si sfi­
dano in duelli sanguinosi con le spillatrici. Questa
commedia della regista esordiente Talya Lavie ha
ottenuto un enorme successo in Israele nel 2014.
Tra gli altri premi, il film si è aggiudicato quello
all’Israeli Film Academy 2014, il premio come
Migliore Regista e Migliore Attrice (Dana Ivgy)
all’ Odessa International Film Festival 2014 e il
Grand Prix al Tribeca Film Festival 2014.

merely consist of serving coffee to male
officials, pushing paper, playing computer
games and counting down the minutes to their
return to civilian life. To keep boredom at bay,
between one “mission” and another the young
recruits fall in love, goad each other, quarrel
and challenge each other to bloody duels with
the office staple guns. This comedy by first time
director Talya Lavie was a huge hit in Israel
in 2014.
Its list of prizes includes multiple awards from
the Israeli Film Academy in 2014, Best Director and Best Actress (Dana Ivgy) at the 2014
Odessa International Film Festival and two
awards at the Tribeca Film Festival 2014, including Best Narrative Feature.

ichla e Feiv’ke Schwarz, sorella
e fratello, potevano rincontrarsi a
Lodz nel 1945. Potevano, ma non
è successo. Lei è immigrata nello Stato
Ebraico in Medioriente, lui è tornato in
Germania, cambiando in suo nome in Pe­
ter e sposando una donna tedesca, per poi
vivere tutta la vita nello stesso campo dove
fu tenuto prigioniero durante la guerra.
Due famiglie, una in Germania e una in
Israele, si specchiano e si confrontano, pur

avendo sempre ignorato l’esistenza dell’al­
tra. Addio Peter Scwartz costruisce e de­
molisce il mito della famiglia e propone
una nuova visione dei racconti famigliari.
Il film ha vinto tra gli altri il premio per il

rother and sister Feiv’ke and Michla
Schwarz, could have been reunited in
Lodz in 1945. They could have met, but
it never happened. Michla emigrated to the
new Jewish state in the Middle East, while
Feiv’ke returned to Germany, changed his
name to Peter and married a German woman. He spent the rest of his life living in the
ruins of the concentration camp where he was
imprisoned during the war.
Two families, one in Germany and one in
Israel, are strangely mirrored, even though
each was unaware of the existence of the other.
Farewell Herr Schwarz constructs a family
myth, to then deconstruct it and propose a
new perspective on the importance of family
stories. Awards won by the film include Best
Documentary at the 2013 Haifa IFF, the prize
for Best German Documentary at the Berlin
Jewish Film Festival 2014 and the David A.
Stein Memorial Award for Best Documentary
at the Toronto Jewish Film Festival in 2014.

srael Moscati, “figlio della Shoah”, decide di partire per
un viaggio alla ricerca di altri figli e nipoti di soprav­
vissuti per condividere la sua sofferenza con loro. È
un viaggio a cui non può più sottrarsi: Roma, Parigi e
Israele per indagare nell’animo e nelle emozioni di uomini
e donne che, come lui, si sono ritrovati per tutta la vita a
convivere con il trauma e il silenzio dei propri genitori.
Questo è il momento di condividere il suo dolore e di cer­
care dai suoi compagni di viaggio altre risposte, inseguite
per tutta la vita. Perché benché se ne parli e si affronti il
dolore, la ricerca di risposte non si esaurisce mai.
Il percorso emotivo di Israel Moscati, che prende le mos­
se dal voler raccontare la Shoah a sua nipote, si snoda at­
traverso le voci di Dina Wardi, psicoterapeuta e autrice di
“Le candele della memoria”, l’architetto Vivi Salomon, il
medico Miri Sklero, e lo spazzacamino Israel Laurent. Il
documentario, per la prima volta, affronta il tema della se­
conda e terza generazione dopo la Shoah a Roma, dando
voce all’antiquario Giuseppe Calò e a sua figlia Giorgia. Il
documentario è stato presentato al Festival Internazionale
del Film di Roma 2014 e trasmesso dalla Rai in occasione
del Giorno della Memoria 2015.

srael Moscati, a “child of the Holocaust”,
decides to set off on a journey of discovery to
find other children and grandchildren of survivors to share his suffering with them. It is a
journey he can no longer avoid. In Rome, Paris and Israel he explores the hearts and minds
of men and women who, like him, have spent
their whole lives living with their parents’ trauma and silence. Now it is time to share his pain
and discover other answers from his travelling
companions, responses he has sought all his
life. Because while one discusses and deals with
the pain, the quest for answers is never-ending.
The emotional journey undertaken by Israel
Moscati was driven by the desire to talk to his
granddaughter about the Holocaust. It unfolds
through perspectives given by Dina Wardi, a
psychotherapist and author of “Memorial Candles: Children of the Holocaust”, the architect
Vivi Salomon, doctor Miri Sklero and the chimneysweep Israel Laurent. For the first time, this
documentary tackles the subject of the second
and third generation after the Holocaust in
Rome, also hearing from antiques dealer Giuseppe Calò and his daughter Giorgia. The
documentary was presented at the Rome International Film Festival in 2014 and screened on
television by Italian public broadcaster, RAI to
mark Holocaust Memorial Day in 2015.

S
i stima che circa 400.000 persone siano state tatuate ad Au­
schwitz; oggi i sopravvissuti sono solo poche migliaia. Che
significato ha oggi quel numero tatuato sulle braccia dei so­
pravvissuti, per loro, per i loro figli e i nipoti? Numbered do­
cumenta il contesto terribile in cui quei numeri furono assegnati e il
significato che hanno assunto oggi per le persone che ci convivono.
Protagonista del film diventa il numero stesso e la sua evoluzione
come simbolo personale e collettivo dal 1940 ad oggi. Quelle cica­
trici, che dovevano distruggere le identità, si trasformano in testimo­
nianze illuminanti, personali e piene di vita.
Il documentario si è aggiudicato, tra gli altri, il premio come Mi­
glior Documentario al Religion Today Film Festival 2013, il pre­
mio come Miglior opera prima all’Israeli Documentary Forum
Awards 2012 e il Premio Silver Hugo al Chicago International
Film Festival 2012.

n estimated 400,000 people were tattooed
in Auschwitz; only some several thousand
survivors are still alive now. What does that
number tattooed on the survivors’ arms
mean today – for the survivors themselves, their
children and grandchildren? Numbered documents
the terrible context during which these tattoos were
assigned as well as the meaning they have now assumed for the people who have to live with them.
Indeed, the film’s protagonist becomes the number
itself, as it evolves and turns into both a personal and collective symbol from 1940 to date. These
scars, which aimed to destroy personal identity,
turn into testimonies that are personal, enlightening and full of life.
Prizes won by Numbered include Best Documentary at the Religion Today Film Festival 2013, Best
First Work at the 2012 Israeli Documentary Forum
Awards 2012 and the Silver Hugo Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival in 2012.

I
l documentario racconta il viaggio in Pu­
glia di Shuni, Ester e Rivka, tre donne di
Tel Aviv alla ricerca delle proprie radici.
Le accomuna l’esperienza dei loro genito­
ri nei lager nazisti, la liberazione e la perma­
nenza per un lungo periodo di tempo in campi
e ville allestite a Santa Maria di Leuca, Tri­
case, Santa Maria al Bagno, Santa Cesarea e
altri piccoli centri nel Salento. Una comunità,
quella nei paesi in provincia di Lecce, nella
quale, nell’immediato dopoguerra s’intreccia­
no solidarietà, indigenza e prove d’integrazio­
ne. Una comunità che vedrà anche sbocciare
storie d’amore, coronate da molte gravidanze,
come quelle che portarono alla nascita delle
stesse Ester, Shuni e Rivka.
Lo sfondo storico della vicenda viene rico­
struito dal Prof. Fabrizio Lelli, docente di
Lingua e letteratura ebraica all’Università del
Salento, intervistato dallo stesso Gady Castel,
con la testimonianza di Paolo Pisacane e di
tanti altri testimoni di quei tempi.

he documentary follows three women from Tel Aviv Shuni, Ester and Rivka – on a trip to the Italian region
of Apulia in search of their roots. They are bound together by the experience of their parents, who were
incarcerated in the Nazi concentration camps, liberated and
then spent a long time in villas and camps established in Santa Maria di Leuca, Tricase, Santa Maria al Bagno, Santa
Cesarea and other small villages in the Salento area. In the
immediate post-war period, these villages in the province
of Lecce formed a community driven by solidarity, hardship
and attempts at integration. There were even love stories,
crowned by many pregnancies, like those leading to the births of Shuni, Ester and Rivka themselves.
The historical background to the story is reconstructed
through testimonies given by Paolo Pisacane, Professor Fabrizio Lelli, a lecturer in Hebrew Language and Literature
at the University of Salento (interviewed by producer Gady
Castel), and many other eyewitnesses from the period.

rik, un uomo di mezza età che vive
in un kibbutz nel nord di Israele, non
frequenta spesso sua figlia Nicole da
quando lui e la sua ormai ex-moglie
hanno divorziato. Quando viene invitato nel­
la sua vecchia casa per celebrare il diciasset­
tesimo compleanno della figlia, scopre che il
nuovo compagno della sua ex, Amir, vi si è già
trasferito con suo figlio. Cercando di trattenere
il suo disappunto e comportarsi bene, si rende
conto che non è facile per lui adattarsi a questa
nuova situazione poco familiare.

Felice nel Box
A
nni ‘70. Stefano è un fotografo trentenne ebreo.
Per un reportage si trova nei pressi di Sabbio­
neta. Esplorando la cittadella e i suoi dintorni,
in sella alla sua amata motocicletta, si imbatte
in un cimitero ebraico abbandonato. Impressionato dal
pessimo stato di conservazione decide istintivamente
di prendere con sé una delle lapidi e di portarla a Mi­
lano. Vuole salvarne almeno una a testimonianza della
comunità ebraica di Sabbioneta che altrimenti rischie­
rebbe di essere dimenticata per sempre. Nel momento
stesso in cui Stefano carica la lapide sulla moto, fa la
sua apparizione il fantasma del sepolto. Si tratta del si­
gnor Felice Leon Foà, morto sessantenne, che si pre­
senta con una lunga barba bianca, cappello a bombetta
e bastone da passeggio. Invisibile agli occhi del foto­
grafo, Felice lo seguirà…
Il cortometraggio è ispirato a una storia vera che vede il
padre della regista come protagonista. Felice nel Box
è stato presentato all’Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, al
Toronto Jewish Film Festival, al San Francisco Jewish
Film Festival.

he 1970s. Stefano is a Jewish photographer in
his thirties. He travels to the Sabbioneta area
for work. In the saddle of his trusted motorcycle, he explores the city and its surroundings
and comes across an abandoned Jewish cemetery.
Shocked by the terrible state it is in, he instinctively
decides to carry one of the tombstones with him to
Milan. He wants to save at least one piece of proof to
testify the existence of Sabbioneta’s Jewish community,
which would otherwise be forgotten forever. As Stefano
is loading the tombstone onto his motorbike, the spirit
of the person originally buried beneath it appears. It
is Felice Leon Foa’, who died in his sixties in the 18th
century. He appears with a large white beard, a bowler
hat and walking stick. Invisible to the photographer,
Felice will follow him…
This short film is inspired by a true story involving the
director’s own father. Felice nel Box was presented at
the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, the Toronto Jewish
Film Festival and the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival.

uglio 2006. Leonardo Zuliani è scomparso.

re la clamorosa notizia diventa vera e propria emergenza
nazionale mentre un innumerevole gruppo di seguaci si
accalca davanti alla casa del giovane attivista. La mam­
ma è disperata, il quartiere paralizzato. Alla televisione ogni
canale parla di lui, tutte le autorità esprimono la loro solida­
rietà alla famiglia. Molti non vogliono crederci, forse sperano
sia un’altra delle sue trovate. Genio della comunicazione, fu­
mettista di successo, stilista visionario, scrittore di grido, atti­
vista dei diritti civili: ma chi è veramente Leonardo?
Con il genere cinematografico del “Mockumentary”, ovvero
“falso documentario”, e con la satira, il regista Alberto Ca­
viglia cerca di rispondere alla domanda: esiste ai giorni no­
stri una nuova chiave per parlare di antisemitismo in modo da
coinvolgere e sensibilizzare su un tema così controverso?
Pe­
core in erba, presentato alla Mostra del Cinema di Venezia
2015, affronta in modo geniale il tema dell’antisemitismo, at­
traverso la voce di personaggi reali e immaginari, rielaborando
luoghi comuni e umorismo ebraico.
Il film si avvale della partecipazione straordinaria di numerosi
personaggi dello spettacolo e intellettuali quali Corrado Augias,
Ferruccio De Bortoli, Elio, Fabio Fazio, Gipi, Linus, Giancarlo
Magalli, Vittorio Sgarbi, Kasia Smutniak, Mara Venier.

genre with satire, director Alberto
Caviglia tries to answer the question: is there a new way of speaking
about anti-Semitism nowadays, a
way that truly engages people and
raises their awareness about such a
delicate topic? Pecore in erba, presented at the 2015 Venice Film Festival, uses a clever way to approach
anti-Semitism, using real and imaginary characters, re-elaborating
clichés and Jewish humour.
The film features cameos by a number of famous intellectuals and
figures from the Italian world of
entertainment, including Corrado
Augias, Ferruccio De Bortoli, Elio,
Fabio Fazio, Gipi, Linus, Giancarlo Magalli, Vittorio Sgarbi, Kasia
Smutniak and Mara Venier.

C
ome spiegare al proprio figlio il divie­
to nella religione ebraica di disperde­
re il seme? Il regista e ebreo ortodos­
so Ori Gruder tenta di rispondere a
questa domanda attraverso un documentario
personale, che entra nei meandri della comu­
nità ebraica chassidica di Israele, intervistan­
do esperti, amici e rabbini. Sacred Sperm
mette in luce le difficoltà che gli appartenenti
alla comunità ortodossa devono affrontare per
rispettare le regole e come la comunità aiuta i
suoi appartenenti nel loro percorso.
Gruder, che ha aderito alla comunità orto­
dossa da adulto, compone un documentario
sull’educazione, partendo da una domanda
scottante, dove prevale l’amore incondiziona­
to per il figlio. Sacred Sperm si è aggiudicato
il premio “Award of Excellence”, all’Accola­
de Global Film Competition 2014 e il premio
come Migliore documentario al Religion To­
day Film Festival 2015.

ow does a parent explain to their son
about the Jewish religion’s prohibition
on wasting sperm? The director Ori
Gruder, who is also an orthodox Jew,
tries to answer this question through a personal
documentary. He explores the issue among the
orthodox Hasidic Jewish community in Israel,
interviewing experts, friends and rabbis. Sacred
Sperm illustrates the struggles the orthodox community faces in order to respect the rules, and
examines how the community helps its members
in their quest.
Gruder, who joined the Orthodox Hasidic community as an adult, starts from a daring question
to create a documentary about education, driven by his unconditional love for his son. Sacred
Sperm won the “Award of Excellence” at the Accolade Global Film Competition 2014 and Best
Documentary at Religion Today Film Festival
2015.

studente ortodosso di yeshiva (la
scuola religiosa) e una ragazza di di­
ciotto anni affetta da un tumore. La relazione
tra i due diviene man mano sempre più intima
e appassionata, sino a trascendere le regole
della religione e della società.
Possiamo lasciarci alle spalle i nostri pecca­
ti? Tornare indietro nel tempo? E’ la domanda
posta all’inizio di questo film, basato su un
controverso racconto di Yehoshua Greenberg
e brillantemente diretto dal fratello Amichai.
Il film si è aggiudicato la menzione speciale al
Religion Today Film Festival 2015.

ice Versa is the story of an innocent relationship between a religious Yeshiva
scholar and an 18-year-old cancer patient. Their relationship slowly becomes
more intimate and passionate, to the point where
it transcends the rules of religion and society.
Can we repent and leave our sins behind us? Can
we go back in time? These questions are question
posed at the start of this short drama based on a
controversial novel by Yehoshua Greenberg, deftly directed by his brother Amichai. The film was
awarded a Special Mention at the 2015 Religion
Today Film Festival.

A Matter of Size
U
n gruppo di persone obese della città israeliana Ramla prova a fare i conti con una
dieta molto stretta, ma ogni tentativo è vano. Uno tra loro, Herzl, dopo aver inizia­
to a lavorare come lavapiatti in un ristorante giapponese, viene in contatto con il
mondo del Sumo di cui Kitano, il manager del ristorante, è stato maestro. Herzl convince
Kitano ad iniziarlo alla lotta giapponese e, piano piano, riesce a coinvolgere tutti i suoi
amici con gli stessi problemi di “taglia forte”.
Attraverso il Sumo, questo gruppo di persone riesce a vivere finalmente in armonia con
il proprio corpo. Presto scopriranno che per accettare se stessi non serve la lotta giap­
ponese…
A Matter of Size è stato presentato al Tribeca Film Festival ed ha aperto il Jerusalem Film
Festival (2009). Questa commedia israeliana intelligente e ben fatta ha avuto In Israele
un grandissimo successo ed e stata nominata in ben tredici categorie agli Israeli Academy
Awards. L’idea del film è stata acquistala dalla Dimension Films, dei produttori di Hol­
lywood Harvey e Bob Weinstein per riproporla in versione americana.

A
group of obese people from the Israeli city of Ramla tries to go on a very strict diet, but all
attempts at losing weight are in vain. One of the group, Herzl, works as a dish washer in a
Japanese restaurant and there he discovers the world of sumo thanks to restaurant manager
Kitano, a former sumo coach. Herzl persuades Kitano to introduce him to the Japanese sport and
slowly starts to involve all his friends who share his same “plus-size” problems. Through Sumo, these
people finally manage to live in harmony with their bodies. They will soon learn that the Japanese
sport is not necessary to accept their fatness…
In the year it was produced, A Matter of Size was presented at the Tribeca Film Festival and opened
the Jerusalem Film Festival. This clever, well-made Israeli comedy was a huge domestic hit and was
nominated in 13 categories at the Israeli Academy Awards. Dimension Films, run by Hollywood
producers Harvey and Bob Weinstein, bought the idea for the picture with a view to an American
remake.

he Garden of Eden ritrae Gan HaShlosha,
uno dei parchi più grandi e frequentati in
Israele, conosciuto di solito come il “Sakh­
ne”. Il film segue l’attività durante un anno
catturando la bellezza del ciclo delle stagioni sco­
prendo storie umane, personali e collettive.
Yaacov, abbandonato da sua moglie si bagna per
purificarsi; Athir, cerca di trovare le forze per an­
dare alla ricerca di una vita migliore; Yael viene
per rilassarsi e dimenticare i traumi della sua in­
fanzia; Itzhak cerca rifugio e conforto nella fre­
schezza dell’acqua.
Ran Tal ha creato un ritratto concreto e nello stes­
so tempo astratto che conquista l’occhio e il cuore
del pubblico. Il film si è aggiudicato il premio per
il Miglior Documentario al Festival di Gerusa­
lemme 2012.

HaShlosha, better known as “Sakhne”, one
the largest and most visited parks in Israel.
The film documents a year in the life of the
park, capturing the beauty of the seasons and
uncovering human stories there, both personal
and collective.
Yaacov, whose wife left him, bathes to purify
himself; Athir is trying to drum up the strength to
search for a better life; Yael comes to relax and
forget the traumas of her childhood; Itzhak finds
a refuge and comfort in the cool waters.
Ran Tal has created a portrait that is concrete
yet abstract at the same time, one which dazzles
the eyes and charms the heart. The film won the
prize for Best Director at the Jerusalem Film
Festival in 2012

trentasette anni, Miri, assistente di volo per la El Al, è già
vedova due volte. La sua vita ordinata è sconvolta da un ra­
gazzino cinese abbandonato, la cui madre immigrata è stata
espulsa da Israele in modo sbrigativo. Il film è un toccante
misto di commedia e dramma in cui due esseri umani così differenti
l’uno dall’altro, così come lo possono essere Tel Aviv da Pechino, si
fanno compagnia l’un l’altro in un viaggio straordinario che restitu­
isce entrambi ad una vita piena di significato.
La regista del film si è laureata alla Beit Zvi School of Stage and
Cinematic Arts ed oggi lavora anche come montatrice. Tra i suoi
film spiccano il pluripremiato Crows e

t thirty-seven, Miri is a twice-widowed, El Al flight attendant. Her well-regulated existence is suddenly turned upside
down by an abandoned Chinese boy whose migrant-worker
mother has been suddenly deported from Israel. The film
is a touching comic-drama in which two human beings - as different from each other as Tel Aviv is from Beijing - accompany each
other on a remarkable journey, one that takes them both back to a
meaningful life.
The film’s director graduated from the Beit Zvi School of Stage and
Cinematic Arts and today she also works as an editor. Her filmography includes the multi-award winning productions Crows and Tel
Aviv Stories. Noodle received ten nominations for the Israeli Film
Academy awards and was presented at many international showcases, such as the Haifa International Film Festival (where it won
the Critics’ Prize) and the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Souvenirs
hahar è un regista disoccupato che vive gra­
zie al sostegno di suo padre, Slaiman. Per
dare una spinta al suo futuro professionale,
l’anziano padre gli consiglia di fare un film
sulla Brigata Ebraica, in cui si era arruolato duran­
te la seconda guerra mondiale. Shahar non è entu­
siasta della proposta ma quando scopre che forse
Slaiman ha lasciato in Olanda dei “souvenirs”,
ovvero dei figli avuti da due donne, decide di fare
il film con l’intenzione di ritrovare i discendenti
sconosciuti del padre. I due partono sulle tracce
della Brigata, iniziando il loro viaggio in Israele,

proseguendo in Italia e in Germania ed arrivando
sino in Olanda. Lo spettatore può così conoscere la
vera storia della Brigata Ebraica. In parallelo però
Shahar porta avanti la sua ricerca segreta per ritro­
vare questi suoi parenti dimenticati sino a fare una
sconcertante scoperta...
Shahar Cohen rivela in questo suo primo docu­
mentario la sua capacità di dare un risvolto comi­
co a un documentario che non glissa sul confronto
con la verità storica, anche se questa potrebbe es­
sere ragione di imbarazzo.

hahar is an unemployed film director who
survives thanks to support from his father,
Slaiman. To provide some stimulus for his
son’s career, the old man suggests making
a film about the Jewish Brigade, the military
group he fought with in the Second World War.
Shahar is not very keen on the idea but when
he discovers that Slaiman may have left behind
some “souvenirs” in the Netherlands, in the form
of babies had with two Dutch girls, he decides
to make the film, also to trace the descendants
his father never met. They set off on the trail of
the Brigade, starting from Israel then travelling
to Italy, Germany and eventually Holland. This
way the audience can learn the real story of the
Jewish Brigade. In tandem, Shahar continues his
secret search for his forgotten relatives, until he
makes a disconcerting discovery…
Shahar Cohen’s first documentary reveals his
ability to bring a comic touch to a film that does
not shrink from the historical truth, even if it
could be embarrassing.

L
a forza di nuotare è la vicenda di queste sette don­
ne, della squadra di nuoto del club “HaKoah” di
Vienna. Le donne, che negli anni trenta del seco­
lo scorso erano state delle giovani sportive in una
Vienna ribelle e intellettuale, con lo scoppio della guerra
si sono sparpagliate ai quattro angoli della terra. Non tut­
te sono rimaste in contatto. Tutte in compenso però hanno
avuto una vita piena ed emozionante e continuano infine a
praticare regolarmente il nuoto.
Yaron Zilberman, approdato al cinema insolitamente dal
mondo del High Tech, ha fatto un film molto curato e adatto
sia al grande schermo che alla televisione. Ha incontrato le
donne a casa loro, in Israele, in Inghilterra e negli Stati Uni­
ti, documentando la loro storia. In uno dei momenti culmi­
nanti del film, egli torna assieme a loro nella città dei sogni,
da cui furono costrette a scappare sessantacinque anni pri­
ma, per nuotare insieme ancora una volta nella spettacolare
piscina olimpionica.

he strength to swim binds these seven women from
the swimming team at the “HaKoah” sports club
in Vienna. In the 1930s, these women were young
champions in a rebellious and intellectual Vienna,
but when war broke out, they were scattered to the four
corners of the earth. They did not all stay in touch, but they
have all had a full and exciting life, and still swim regularly
- even now.
Yaron Zilberman, who unusually came to the world of cinema via the high-tech industry, has made a very carefully
constructed film suitable for both the big screen and for
television. He met the women in their own homes in Israel,
Britain and the USA, documenting their history. In one of
the film’s climactic sequences, he returns with them to the
City of Dreams from which they were forced to flee 65 years
earlier, so they can swim together once more in the spectacular Olympic pool.
