CAPITOLO 7: MAKING POLITE REQUESTS and ASKING PERMISSION MAKING POLITE REQUESTS To ask someone politely to do something for you, you would say: Mi puoi + infinitive (tu) Mi può + infinitive (Lei) -You would use mi puoi when you know the person on a first name basis. -You would use mi può when asking someone you do not know. Answers include: Si!, Ok!, Va bene!, Bene!, Benissimo!, Certo!, e Perfetto! *Sometimes Italians use a combination of several of these expressions. WHICH ONE WOULD YOU USE? ASKING PERMISSION To ask permission to do something, use: posso + infinitive Examples include: -Posso entrare? (May I come in?) -Posso parlare? (May I speak?) *Sometimes it’s enough to just say posso? with an accompanying gesture. YOUR TURN! Practice asking permission to do something.
