YOUTH LANGUAGE IN ITALY
CREATIVE WRITING
CLASS 2 A
SLANG
SLANG IS A TERM COMMONLY USED TO DEFINE THE VARIETIES
OF LANGUAGE THAT ARE USED BY SPECIFIC GROUPS OF PEOPLE
AND THAT ARE SIGNIFICANTLY REMOVED FROM THE LANGUAGE
OR DIALECT NORMALLY SPOKEN IN THE AREA. EVERY
GENERATION OR SOCIAL GROUP USUALLY DEVELOPS ITS
VARIETIES OF LANGUAGE, FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT THE
VARIOUS COMPONENTS OF A GROUP MORE OFTEN SPEAK "
BETWEEN THEM " AND NOT “WITH THE OTHER " , OR BECAUSE
THEY DELIBERATELY DO NOT INTEND TO BE UNDERSTOOD BY
THOSE WHO ARE NOT PART OF THE GROUP .AN EXAMPLE OF
“SLANG “IS THE “YOUTH LANGUAGE “: THE PHENOMENON IS
INTERESTING FOR THE FACT THAT SOMETIMES ADULTS DO NOT
UNDERSTAND YOUTH LANGUAGE ; SOME OF THE WORDS
BELONGING TO A SLANG (WHICH IS NOT VERY DURABLE OVER
TIME) MAY , HOWEVER , SOONER OR LATER , BECOME PART OF
EVERYDAY LANGUAGE
THE FUNDAMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A SLANG ARE :
1)THE USE OF A LANGUAGE WHICH CAN BE THE DIALECT OF THE PLACE
OR THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE : SLANG DOES NOT HAVE ITS OWN
INDEPENDENT BASIS IN FACT ( THE BASIS THAT IT IS PRESENT IN A
DIALECT OR IDIOM OF A LINGUISTIC MINORITY ) . WITHOUT THE
SUPPORT OF THIS LANGUAGE SLANG CANNOT DEVELOP . THE LACK OF
COMPLETE AUTONOMY OF A JARGON IS REFLECTED IN THE FACT THAT
YOU CONTINUE TO MAKE SYSTEMATIC USE OF BASIC IDIOM
(VOCABULARY, GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES , ETC. . ) .
2) A SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE FROM THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE.
3)SECRECY : SLANG AIMS , IN FACT, TO PREVENT UNDERSTANDING BY
OTHER SOCIAL GROUPS. THIS SPECIAL FEATURE IS CALLED CRYPTIC . THE
USE OF SOME SPECIAL WORDS BY A GROUP OF STUDENTS , FOR
EXAMPLE , DOES NOT NECESSARILY HAVE THE PURPOSE OF MAKING A
SECRET LANGUAGE .
AT INTERNATIONAL LEVEL WE NOTICE THE PHENOMENON OF SOME
COCKNEY RHYMING SLANG AS THE LONDONERS , IN WHICH WORDS OR
PHRASES ARE REPLACED WITH OTHER WORDS OR PHRASES THAT
RHYME WITH THEM (SUCH AS APPLES AND PEARS INSTEAD OF STAIRS )
.
IN FRANCE, IN VERLAN , THE WORDS ARE PRONOUNCED IN
REVERSE, (AN ANAGRAM OF INDIVIDUAL LETTERS OR
SYLLABLES OF THE SAME NAME ). A SIMILAR
PHENOMENON (THE " VESRE ", MEANING " REVÉS " ) IS
FOUND IN MANY WORDS OF LUNFARDO OF BUENOS AIRES,
AND IN THE PODANÀ GREECE ( GREEK : ΠΟΔΑΝΆ , WHICH
MEANS THAT ΑΝΆΠΟΔΑ REVERSE ) .IN ITALY AND IN THE
VALLEYS OF TICINO DIFERENT “SLANGS “WERE AND ARE
PARTLY STILL SPOKEN, MOSTLY BORN IN THE COMMUNITY
OF ITINERANT CRAFTSMEN . MANY OF THESE SLANGS ,
WHICH TYPICALLY AMOUNT TO A FEW HUNDRED WORDS,
ARE NOW EXTINCT (ESPECIALLY DUE TO THE GRADUAL
DISAPPEARANCE OF THE TRADES AMONG WHICH THEY
WERE WIDESPREAD ) .
LEAVING ASIDE THE SOCIOLOGICAL ANALYSIS, THESE SLANG
OFTEN BIZARRE AND QUEER, WE WOULD SAY
PICTURESQUE, OFFER US A GLIMPSE OF THE MENTALITY
AND HABITS OF YOUTH. IT IS NO COINCIDENCE THAT MOST
OF THESE WORDS HAVE TO DO WITH THE SCHOOL, WITH
LOVE, SEX, DRUGS, FUN. WE SAY "SLANGS" IN THE PLURAL,
NOT THE SINGULAR, BECAUSE IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO
DRAW A PRECISE AND DETAILED MAP OF THE DIFFERENT
SLANGS USED BY YOUNG ITALIANS: THERE IS NOT A
COMMON ONE IN ITALY, BUT IT VARIES FROM REGION TO
REGION, EVEN FROM TOWN TO TOWN. THE LEXICON,
THEN, CHANGES RAPIDLY AND THE WORDS USED BY A
GENERATION OF YOUNG PEOPLE ARE NO LONGER THOSE
OF A DECADE EARLIER.
HERE ARE SOME EXAMPLES
ACCANNARE : TO STOP – TO BE LEFT ALONE SUDDENLY
ACCOLLARE : TO BE STUCK
BELLA: ( NICE ) BUT IN SLANG IT MEANS “ HELLO”
DEVASTO: DISORDER ( WHICH LIVES SOMEBODY EXAUSTED)
FLASHING SOMEBODY ( PRETENDING TO SEE SOMEBODY BUT IT ISN’T
TRUE- IT’S NOT HIM)
FARE RATE : TO BE DISGUSTING
ESSERE ACCOLLATI : TO DO EVERYTHING
SVAMPARE : TO SMOKE
ESSERE SCESA :TO BE IN A BAD MOOD
SCLERARE : TO BE ANGRY, CRAZY ABOUT SOMETHING
SVARIONARE : TO SAY NONSENSE
TAJO ; AMAZING , WONDERFUL
SCIALLA: TAKE IT EASY
BECCARE : TO KISS
DARSI UNA PUNTA: TO MEET
IL NULLA : I DON’T CARE
CHE BONGATA : LUCKY YOU
