EMANUELE Such courtesy! I have not come As a suppliant to kneel at your feet: That which you give me, Cesare, I hold already as a result of my valour, And until now I have defended it Against all who wished to seize it. Come with your sword to take it, And, dead, [but not before,] I’ll surrender it to you. DIEGO Qual’ira fatale nel petto ribelle! Scordate, scordate un odio sì folle. Of their youngest years, nor the sight Of these paternal halls has been sufficient To persuade them to milder intentions. ISABELLA Unfeeling sons! Is this how you come to the Aid of her who gave you life? Still merciful God has not exhausted The hot-headed blood-lust That torments your hearts! Sons of a single homeland, Of one and the same territory, What fury is it that precipitates you Into an accursed war? Is not the hatred of so many centuries Yet exhausted? O rebellious spirits, Let us have peace, peace for once, Relieve this wretched country That has sunk so low, Return it to its fair days Of glory and bravery. CORO DI DONNE Noi pur chiamiam solleciti. ISABELLA I hope for nothing. If God had been compassionate of my fate, He would have killed me That day when I felt my womb bound With a sharp tremor [of life]! The icy frigidity of the tomb Would have placated Heaven, And then at least I should not be about to die Over the slaughter of one brother by another. CORO Non disperar, chè florida Speranza ancor ti resta: Cessata la tempesta Ritorna il dì seren. CHORUS Do not despair, for a rosy hope Still remains for you: When tempest ceases, The day returns to serenity. ⓟ & © 2012 Naxos Rights International Ltd. Is this how you have left me? Do you not know how painful it is to wait? Since I was blessed by the receipt of your ring An hour has flown, and it seems a century. Return to me, that I may pour forth My grief upon your breast. (guarda al bosco) (She looks towards the wood.) Me di Messina al soglio Valor, diritto appella, La nobile Isabella È genitrice a me. BEATRICE Cielo! qual mai favella, Quale periglio ahimè! BEATRICE You have said enough. If you have not given me a false name/If your face does not bely you, If you are a [true] knight, Why do you disturb my peace With presumptuous words? CESARE Here, remote from populated haunts, My faithful men caught sight of you: I flew hither – but my steps were [all too] Slow to keep pace with Love. Hear me... hear me... My bravery and my rights Call me to the throne of Messina, The noble Isabella Is my mother. BEATRICE Heavens! whatever words are these, What danger is this, alas? EMANUELE Go, my trusty friends; carry my bride Her nuptial vestments; I shall follow you very quickly. (His followers depart. He advances towards the tombs.) You sleep, aged father, And what squalid and dreadful trophies Of citizens’ blood do I bring to your tomb! Yet, offended spirit, Rise not up against me; no, gentle thoughts Of peace find me here at your gravestone, For the sovereign lady of all my desires Taught me, in her sweet school, to be pious. He who devotes his soul, and all his heart To the delights of first love, cannot Sigh for the clash of unsheathed swords Or for bitter glories; But mutual beatings of the heart, sweet sighs Are the images of his desires: For if a flower unfolds itself in this world, Only the hand of love may pluck it – SCENA VII SCENE SEVEN I seguaci di Cesare e di Emanuele a poco a poco entrano in iscena. ISABELLA ai fratelli [10] O figli, a voi dal tumulo Non venne augusta voce, Che l’anima feroce A pio volere aprì?
