INTRODUZIONE
U
i turisti.
INTRODUCTION
A
n artisanal craft that has become specialised
over the years. We have witnessed the continued growth of our local manufacturing sector
which has been the cornerstone of our economy since the 60s. There are approximately 90 hat-producing companies, and another 40 spin-off businesses
(including embroiderers, box makers, dry cleaners, textile printers and components manufacturers) together
providing approximately 2000 jobs that make up 65% of
the local workforce.
Today this magnificent art, known and envied around the
world, has also become a catalyst for tourism. Numerous
trade publications have recognised our region as the “hat
capital” and therefore a must-see tourist destination. We
can never forget the article published in the New York
Times in the spring of 2007. Ours is a land of villages
and ancient traditions that enchant tourists. The sea, the
mountains, the fresh produce, the work, the production,
the people: many different elements that together provide a wholly unique experience.
Looking through this catalogue you will be able to appreciate another extraordinary achievement: for the first
time ever we have brought together 14 hat producers
to create a veritable “Guild of Artisans”, highlighting the
quality and craftsmanship of their products. This volume
can be used to promote our region and also as a business
card for these 14 companies.
And so you see the result of entrepreneurs working together with the common goal of boosting market share,
especially abroad, overcoming individualism and developing initiatives that are of mutual benefit.
“Marche, land of hats” would not exist if it were not for
the contribution of the regional government, Regione
Marche, and the support of the Marca Fermana Association. It is also thanks to them that, from tomorrow, our
voice will be heard even louder!

Montappone, Massa
cappello viene oggi indicato come
prodotti.
Un polo produttivo, formato da 90
aziende e altre 40 dell’indotto, che
ha saputo controbattere alla crisi
economica degli ultimi anni e che ha
trovato nell’internazionalizzazione
esclusivi o pret-à-porter.

district is now listed as one of the
most important industrial areas in
Europe, specialising in the production of this fashion accessory and
internationally renowned for the excellent quality of its products.
A productive hub, made up of 90
companies and more than 40 satellite activities, has been able to
counter the recent economic crisis,
and find the road to success with
internationalisation, maintaining an
economic-financial profile in a fair
state of health and largely defending profit margins. This has ensured
an increase both in the number of
employees (which total almost 2000
workers, compared to 1776 in 2010)
and in turnover, which is around 140
million euros. Its relationship with
the foreign market guarantees between 60 and 70% of turnover.
There are many enterprises that
boast direct and consolidated relationships with the international
markets and they have a strong export propensity. Some of these even
manage to export between 80 and
90% of production, with exclusive
products or ready-to-wear.

Monte Vidon Corrado e Falerone:

t is an enterprise that can trace its
roots back to the 1300’s, when
wearing a hat was exclusively associated with agricultural activities. The peasants of Fermo began to
weave harvested stems, transforming
them into hats. A document exists
which serves to prove their production in 1716. Montappone, at the end
of the 1800’s, was the first Italian town
to industrialize the fabrication of hats.
Other than this first municipality,
we must also make mention of Mass
Fermana, Monte Vidon Corrado and
Falerone: they make up part of the
hat district and we will show them
all to you, by means of artistic pho-
tos which complement the charm of
these places.
At the end of the sixties, a highly specialised monosectorial focus took
shape in the four municipalities, due
to creativity and skill rendering this
particular production famous at an
international level. The production
of accessories, like gloves, scarves
and shawls joined the artisanal process of hat-making.
In order to protect the promotional
activity of the products, the entrepreneurs established several hat
consortiums, which certify their artisanal practices.
An exhibition of the machines that were originally used,

This product’s historical significance
and tradition have given birth to the
Museum of Hats in Montappone,
which illustrates the various phases
needed to create these very beautiful artisanal products and which exhibits touching pieces, such as the
last hat worn by the director Federico Fellini. The machinery that was
originally used is also on display and
is still in perfect working order.

tappone. It is like entering into Alice’s “Wonderland,” timeless, like every artwork; an original and unique
space of the skills and flair of those
who have forever devoted their energies to creating the best hats of all
time.
Each July Montappone also commemorates the arts’ tradition,
passed down over the years, with
the event, The Straw Hat: restating
the activities, from the harvest, to
the weaving, up until the sewing,
which have in fact made this district
the “international hat centre.”

Page 18 | Land of Hats

T
his hilly area, offering beautiful views surrounded by
the Sibillini Mountains and
25 kilometres of Adriatic
coast, inspired the works of Osvaldo
Licini. It is a limited area, but with a
strong sense of belonging and identity due to a socio-economic fabric
with a prevailing artisanal vocation
represented by the districts of small
business, including the emerging
footwear business (the largest in Europe) and that of the hat. From the
brutal reality of sharecropping agriculture to the family-run workshop,
since the 60s, a widespread system
of small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises, characterised
by a high specialisation and production of the highest quality, has developed and is recognised and appreciated worldwide. To date, there
are 20,000 companies operating in
the area, 8,000 of which are in the
manufacturing sector, a significant
figure when compared with the size
and relatively small population of
the territory with a ratio of almost
one company to every ten inhabitants.
Fermo’s other great claim to fame
is agricultural production, focused
mostly in Valdaso and in the mountain areas. It distinguishes itself for
the quality and variety of native
species cultivated and for products
which are highly appreciated, especially by tourists who are also increasing in the territory. Fruit, wine
and truffles are the delights which
best represent Fermo’s table and are
an important draw for visitors. In addition, this area boasts a wealth of
popular artistic wonders to discover, including palaces, Romanesque
churches, paintings, theatres and
museums. Its beauty has a positive
effect on the quality of life. Here, as
in other territories of the Marche,
the rate of longevity is amongst the
highest in Italy.
