E’ una storia affascinante quella
della floricoltura del Lago Maggiore e del Biellese. Il florovivaismo è nato nella prima metà del
1800, dalla passione di collezionisti di piante esotiche e dai cacciatori di nuove piante, favorito da
condizioni pedo-climatiche ottimali e sviluppato nel contesto
della costituzione dei grandi parchi delle Ville storiche e dei Parchi
botanici del Lago. Con un patrimonio botanico immenso diffuso sul territorio, la coltivazione di
piante rappresenta nelle province
di Biella, Novara e Verbania una
tra le “eccellenze” dell’economia:
la costituzione del Distretto Floricolo del Lago Maggiore ha riconosciuto questa attività. In questa
pubblicazione i florovivaisti specializzati del Distretto hanno voluto presentare le proprie produzioni e indicare i riferimenti delle
loro aziende. Sfogliare queste pagine sarà come percorrere le tappe di un lavoro di squadra svolto
negli anni con serietà, passione e
impegno per porre sul mercato

The history of flower-growing in the Lake Maggiore and Biella areas is a fascinating one, with its origins in the first half
of the 19th century. The activity was stimulated by the enthusiasm of collectors of exotic plants and others whose interest
was in searching for new plants. The soil and climatic conditions of the area were ideal, and the great parks of the historic
villas and botanical gardens of the lake area provided the perfect setting for developing floricultural activity. With this
immense botanical heritage an established feature of the provinces of Biella, Novara and Verbania, it is no wonder that
flower-growing here is one of the prime activities of the economy, acknowledged as such by the institution of the Lake
Maggiore Flower District. This publication has been designed by the specialised flower growers of the District to introduce their production and give details of their nurseries. As you turn the pages you will be following the activity of a team
which over the years has worked with enthusiasm and commitment to put its top quality products on the market, while
respecting a tradition which has been successfully handed down from one generation to the next for almost 200 years.
Die Pflanzenproduktion am Lago Maggiore und in der Gegend von Biella hat eine aufregende Geschichte. Die Pflanzenproduktion ist in der ersten Hälfte des 19.Jahrhunderts entstanden, angeregt von Blumenliebhabern und Sammlern exotischer Pflanzen auf der Jagd nach immer neuen Gewächsen und begünstigt durch optimale Boden- und Klimaverhältnisse. Sie entwickelte sich weiter, als am Lago Maggiore die großen Parks der historischen Villen und botanische Gärten
angelegt wurden. Die Pflanzenproduktion stellt in den Provinzen Biella, Novara und Verbania durch die außerordentliche
botanische Vielfalt in diesem Gebiet einen wirtschaftliche Spitzensektor dar: das beweist die Einrichtung des “Distretto
Floricolo del Lago Maggiore”, ein Erzeugerring von Blumenzüchtern und Baumschulen. Mit dieser Broschüre möchten die

Voici l’histoire fascinante de l’horticulture du Lac Majeur et de la région autour de Biella. L’horticulture est née au cours de
la première moitié du 1800, de la passion de collectionneurs de plantes exotiques et des chasseurs de nouvelles plantes,
facilitée par les conditions pédoclimatiques optimales et développée dans le cadre de la création de grands parcs des Villas
historiques et des Parcs botaniques du Lac. Avec un patrimoine botanique immense distribué sur le territoire, la culture
de plantes représente dans les provinces de Biella, Novara et Verbania l’une des “excellences” de l’économie: la création du
District Horticole du Lac Majeur a reconnu cette activité. Dans cette publication les horticulteurs spécialisés du District ont

wiederzufinden,wie in den Gärten der Villa Taranto und der Borromäischen Inseln oder im Naturpark Burcina. Schon früh verwandelte sich
die Liebhaberei für die Blumendüfte in einen Beruf, der überliefert wurde. Zu den bekanntesten Blumenzüchtern zählten die Gebrüder Rovelli aus Verbania, denen wir die Verbreitung der Kamelie und anderer
Moorbeetpflanzen in Europa seit 1820 zu verdanken haben. Noch heute werden die Besucher der wunderschönen Gärten und Baumschulen der Gegend um den Lago Maggiore und des Erzeugerrings sowie
die Sammler und Käufer von der großen Vielfalt der Pflanzen- und Blumenarten und ihrer hohen Qualität verzaubert. Und diese sind auch
die Königinnen bei den renommierten Veranstaltungen, die mehrmals
im Jahr am Lago Maggiore stattfinden.

Le Lac Majeur est une étendue d’eaux délimitée par des rivages sinueux
et entourée par des montagnes imposantes et vallées pittoresques. Les
sommets enneigés mitigent les températures alpines en favorisant un
climat humide et tempéré. Des conditions climatiques optimales, associées à un terrain acide et riche en humus, ont créé les conditions idéales
pour la production des camélias, des azalées, des rhododendrons, des
érables, des roses et d’autres plantes acidophiles, devenues les protagonistes dans les jardins et les parcs. Le Patrimoine botanique présent sur
le territoire du District se retrouve en des véritables collections comme
dans les Parcs de Villa Taranto, des Iles Borromées, du Parc de la Burcina. Très tôt, pour certains, la passion pour ces essences se transforme
en métier à transmettre. Parmi les plus célèbres pépiniéristes les Frères
Rovelli de Verbania qui ont répandu en Europe les camélias et les autres
plantes acidophiles dès 1820. Encore aujourd’hui les visiteurs des plus
beaux jardins et pépinières du District Horticole du Lac Majeur, ainsi que
les collectionneurs et les acheteurs, restent épatés par la vaste sélection
de variétés de plantes de qualité très élevée. Ce sont les “reines” du Lac,
lors d’événements prestigieux qui ont lieu au cours l’année.

le aziende, svolgere azioni coordinate di
marketing, porsi come referente tra diversi settori produttivi. La nascita del
Distretto costituisce un importante riconoscimento del legame tra territorio
e produzione floricola: una delle prime
attività svolte è stata la fornitura dei fiori
alle Olimpiadi Invernali di Torino 2006 e
Universiade 2007.
Con queste premesse, nei parchi del
Lago Maggiore e del Biellese si sono costituite collezioni storiche di azalee, rododendri e camelie. A fianco di queste
nel tempo si sono sviluppate e sono in
attività aziende specializzate nella produzione di queste essenze per il mercato europeo. Dall’autunno alla primavera inoltrata azalee, camelie, rododendri,
pieris aceri, rose, cornus,... - dai piccoli
esemplari sino a quelli più imponenti
- schiudono le corolle rivelando infinite
tonalità di colore, sfumature e forme. I
florovivaisti hanno quindi costituito un
marchio d’origine “Fiori Tipici del Lago
Maggiore” con cui contrassegnano la
produzione di eccellenza. Recentemente la zona di produzione florovivaistica
delle Province di Verbania, Novara e
Biella è stata riconosciuta come “Distretto Floricolo del Lago Maggiore”. Esso

The Floricultural District of
Lake Maggiore
This is the background to the establishment in the parks and gardens of Lake
Maggiore and the Biella area of historic collections of azaleas, rhododendrons
and camellias. Over the years, these collections have been flanked by nurseries
specialising in producing the same plants
for the European market. From autumn
to late spring, azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, maples, roses, cornus, come
into bloom with their infinite shades of
colour and variations of shape. The local
nurserymen have created a trademark to
protect the “Typical Flowers of Lake Maggiore”, which guarantees the prime quality of the plants produced. Recently the
flower-producing area of the provinces
of Verbania, Novara and Biella has been
given the appellation of “Lake Maggiore
Flower District”. The District includes the
commercial nurseries of the three Provinc-
es, and has the aim of developing the activity of the nurseries, coordinating marketing, and acting as a reference between
various productive sectors. The establishment of the District is an important acknowledgement of the link between the
territory and floricultural production; one
of the District’s earliest activities was to
provide the flowers for the Turin Winter
Olympics in 2006 and Universiade 2007.

Auf diesen Voraussetzungen entstanden
in den Parks am Lago Maggiore und in
der Provinz Biella historische Sammlungen von Azaleen, Rhododendren und
Kamelien. Mit der Zeit entwickelten sich
parallel dazu Betriebe, die sich auf die
Aufzucht dieser Pflanzen für den europäischen Markt spezialisiert haben. Vom
Herbst bis in den Spätfrühlling öffnen kleine
und große Exemplare von Azaleen, Kamelien,
Rhododendren, Ahornbäumen, Rosen und
Hartriegeln ihre Blüten und stellen ihre unzähligen Farbschattierungen und ihren Formenreichtum zur Schau. Die Blumenzüchter und
Baumschulen haben das Gütezeichen “Fiori Tipici del Lago Maggiore” ins Leben gerufen und
kennzeichnen damit ihre Spitzenprodukte. Vor
kurzer Zeit wurde in der Produktionsgegend
der Provinzen Verbania, Novara und Biella der
“Distretto Floricolo del Lago Maggiore” eingerichtet. Dieser setzt sich aus den Betrieben der
drei Provinzen zusammen mit der Zielsetzung
die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Betrieben
zu fördern, gemeinsames Marketing zu betreiben und als Mittler zwischen den verschiede-
nen Produktionsbereichen zu fungieren. Die
Entstehung dieses territoriale Erzeugerrings ist
ein Beweis für die enge Verbindung zwischen
diesem Territorium und der Blumenzucht: eine
der ersten gemeinsamen Arbeiten war die Belieferung mit Blumen für die Olympischen Winterspiele 2006 in Turin und Universiade 2007.

Dans ces conditions, dans les parcs du Lac
Majeur et de la région autour de Biella se sont
créées des collections historiques d’azalées,
rhododendrons et camélias. A côté de celles-ci
au cours du temps se sont développées et sont
en activité des entreprises spécialisées dans
la production de ces essences pour le marché
européen. De l’automne au printemps avancé azalées, camélias, rhododendrons, érables,
roses, cornus... - des exemplaires petits à ceux
plus imposants - ouvrent les corolles en montrant les tonalités infinies de couleur, nuances et formes. Les horticulteurs ainsi ont créé
une marque d’origine “Fleurs Typiques du Lac
Majeur ” avec laquelle ils différentient la production d’excellence. Récemment la zone de
production horticultrice des Provinces de Verbania, Novara et Biella a été reconnue comme
“District Horticole du Lac Majeur”. Il comprend
les entreprises des trois provinces et a pour but
de développer les activités entre les entreprises,
réaliser des actions coordonnées de marketing, se situer comme référence entre les différents secteurs de production. La naissance du
District est une reconnaissance importante du
lien entre le territoire et la production horticole: l’une des premières activités réalisées était
la fourniture des fleurs aux Jeux Olympiques
d’Hiver de Turin 2006 et Universiade 2007.

von Weiss über Rosa zu Rot, mit unzähligen gestreiften und gerandeten Varianten. Die Blütezeiten ändern sich je nach
Sorte; die Camellia sasanqua blüht im
Herbst als erste, dann folgen winterblühende Sorten, sodass ein Kameliengarten
fast das ganze Jahr blühen kann. Wenn
die Blütezeit zu Ende ist, zeigt der Strauch
ein wundervolles glänzendes Blattwerk
und wird oft als luxuriöse Hecke eingesetzt. Den Hauptanteil der Kamelien hat
die Camellia japonica oder “Japanrose”.
Die aussergewöhnliche Sortenanzahl
wird von Sammlern sehr geschätzt. Aus
diesen und anderen Gründen erlebt diese Pflanze einen bemerkenswerten Aufschwung und liegt jetzt schon an zweiter
Stelle nach der Azalee.
Le Camelie
La camelia è un fiore che viene dall’Oriente e le cui origini si perdono nella notte dei tempi e si intrecciano con il
mito dei guerrieri Samurai. Il grande successo riscosso in
tutta Europa durante l’Ottocento si deve essenzialmente
alla grande varietà delle tipologie dei fiori, differenziati per
dimensione, forma e colore. Le gamme cromatiche vanno
dai bianchi al rosa, fino ai rossi generando spesso stupende variegature ed orlature. I periodi di fioritura variano a
seconda della specie, in modo tale che, con la presenza
di Camelia sasanqua e di altre specie a fioritura invernale,
un camelieto possa fiorire quasi tutto l’anno. Quando l’arbusto non è fiorito mostra uno stupendo fogliame, particolarmente lucido e brillante, ed è molto apprezzato per
la costituzione di siepi. La specie principale Camellia japonica, o “Rosa del Giappone”, ha un numero eccezionale di
varietà coltivate, che ben si prestano al collezionismo da
parte degli appassionati. Le camelie, per questo ed altri
motivi, stanno scoprendo un periodo di rifiorito interesse,
tale da renderle le piante più commerciali dopo l’azalea.
Camellia
The camellia is a flower from the East, whose origins are lost
in the mists of time and are intertwined with the myths of the
Samurai warriors. The plant’s huge success in Europe during
1800 is due largely to the great variety of its types of flowers,
differing in size, shape and colour. The colours range from
white through pink to red, and often give rise to marvellous
variegations and edgings. The flowering period varies with
the species, so that a camellia garden which includes sasanqua camellias and other winter flowering species may be in
bloom almost the whole year. When the bush is not in flower the leaves are magnificent, glossy and gleaming, and it is

Le azalee appartengono al genere Rhododendron, anche se nel 1737 il naturalista svedese Linneo aveva già istituito una categoria a parte. La distinzione,
quindi, tra azalee e rododendri, assume
una valenza puramente floricola, basata su tipologie varietali, che si identificano per la presenza di foglie piccole
e tenere ed una abbondante fioritura
che ricopre la pianta intera. La vastissima diffusione di quest’arbusto d’origine orientale, mantiene il suo segreto
nell’adattamento a vari ambienti e persino alla coltivazione in casa e sui balconi. La pianta è molto longeva e si
possono osservare esemplari secolari
messi a dimora in zone particolarmente vocate come le sponde del Lago
Maggiore. La vasta selezione di ibridi
di Azalea japonica permette un’offerta sia di varietà cosiddette extra o di
forzatura, caratterizzate dalla fioritura precoce e fuori stagione non resistenti al freddo, sia di varietà rustiche,
che meglio si adattano alla messa a dimora in parchi e giardini sopportando
temperature rigide. L’Azalea indica del
lago è ormai rinomata per la tipicità e
bellezza del rigoglioso fogliame e della fioritura tardiva. Le Azalee decidue
del gruppo “Mollis” stupiscono per le
loro inusuali tonalità dorate molto resistenti al freddo.

types which are identified by their small,
delicate flowers and the abundance of
blooms which cover the whole plant. This
bush of oriental origin is extremely widespread, due to its capacity for adapting
to a variety of environments, even indoors and on balconies. The plant is very
long-lived, and specimens over a century old can be found planted in particularly congenial areas such as the shores
of Lake Maggiore. The vast selection of
Azalea japonica hybrids determines the
availability both of so-called “extra” or
forced varieties, which bloom early or not
at the usual time of year, and hardy varieties, more suitable for planting in parks
and gardens. The Indigo Azalea of the
lake is now famous for its characteristic,
beautiful, luxuriant foliage and its late
flowering period. The deciduous azaleas
of the “Mollis” group are intriguing, with
their unusual golden shades.

Les azalées appartiennent au gendre Rhododendron, même si
en 1737 le naturaliste suédois Linné avait déjà créé une catégorie séparée. La distinction, donc, entre azalées et rhododendrons,
assume donc une valeur purement horticole, basée sur des types de variétés, qui s’identifient par la présence de petites feuilles
tendres et une floraison prospère qui couvre toute la plante. La
très vaste diffusion de cet arbuste d’origine orientale, maintient
son secret dans l’adaptation aux différents environnements et
même à la culture domestique et sur les balcons. La plante a
une grande longévité et on peut observer des exemplaires séculaires plantés dans des zones très vouées telles que les rivages
du Lac Majeur. La vaste sélection d’hybrides de Azalea japonica
permet une offre aussi bien de variétés dites extra ou de forçage,
riétés rustiques, qui s’adaptent mieux à la plantation dans les
parcs et les jardins. L’Azalea indica du lac est désormais connue
pour la typicité et la beauté du feuillage riche et de la floraison
tardive. Les Azalées caduques du groupe “Mollis” épatent avec
leurs inusuelles tonalités dorées.
I Rododendri
La storia e l’origine dei rododendri si perdono nei secoli e
nelle leggende: le specie coltino dalla regione orientale dello
Yunnan, detto anche “Terra dell’Eterna Primavera”. Anche sulle
Alpi si possono trovare alcune
specie spontanee di rododendro, rendendo questa specie
particolarmente diffusa su tutto il globo. Dopo anni di incroci i botanici hanno ottenuto ibridi dai fiori grandi, che
garantiscono un perfetto ambientamento come piante da
giardino e da coltivazione in vaso, ma hanno costituito anche piante dal portamento nano e piante a forma di alberello.

Rhododendron
The history and origins of rhododendrons are lost in time and are legendary. The species grown in our nurseries
come from the oriental region of Yunnan, which is also known as “the Land of
Eternal Spring”. Some spontaneous species of rhododendron are even found in
the Alps, emphasising how the species is
widespread throughout the world. Years
of crossbreeding have resulted in hybrids with large flowers, perfectly suited
to gardens and pots; but growers have
also produced dwarf plants and some
with a tree-like habit. Much prized are
the dense flower-heads in classic pastel
shades, which glow with an especially
intense colour.
Rhododendron

Apart from the well-known acid-loving
plants, Lake Maggiore is home to other surprising and delightful species: Pieris, Kalmia,
Skimmia and Leucothoe. The most popular
of the group is without doubt the ornamental Pieris japonica, with its long panicles of
flowers, and the russet and bronze of its new
leaves. It can be planted in isolation but is
more often used to make informal hedges
or as a carpeting plant below trees. The different varieties of Kalmia latifolia, a bush
of North American origin, bloom as late as
June. Apart from this colourful flowering in
late spring, the plant has the virtues of highly glossy leaves and resistance to the winter cold. According to the variety, Skimmia
japonica is valued as an evergreen shrub
with berries, or for its highly scented spring
flowers, particularly those on male plants.
Leucothoe is a low-growing shrub especially suitable as a carpeting plant below trees.
With its variegated leaves and marvellous
autumn colours it is a year-round asset to
the garden.

Maple
Originally from Japan, this plant in the symbolism of the oriental garden represents the

growth habit, their shape, and the colour of
their leaves in spring, summer and especially
in autumn, when the leaves take on amazing
shades of colour from deep red to golden yellow and orange. The tree is used in gardens
in clumps or alone; it is highly suitable for
rock gardens and terraces, if it is not placed
against walls with too much exposure to the
sun. It prefers a sub-acid soil, cool, deep, rich
in humus, well-drained and not calcareous.
It is a hardy plant and resists temperatures
from -20 to 25°C. The Japanese maple has
been grown in the Biella area since the beginning of the 20th century. The favourable
soil and climatic conditions have enabled
nurserymen to produce strong plants of high
quality. The Japanese maple is a slow-growing tree with very long cultivation times.

Gruppen zum Einsatz und eignet sich vor allem für steinige Gärten und Terrassen, wobei ein Standort an stark besonnten Mauern
vermieden werden sollte. Er bevorzugt leicht
sauren, kühlen, tiefen, humusreichen, durchlässigen und kalkarmen Boden, ist eine winterharte Pflanze und verträgt Temperaturen
bis zu minus 20-25 C°. Der japanische Ahorn
wird seit Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts in Biella gezogen, wo die Baumschulen dank der
günstigen Bodenverhältnisse widerstandsfähige Bäume von guter Qualität erzeugen.

soil and climatic conditions of the Biella area, these have given rise to a rosegrowing activity which has been producing roses now for 150 years. The modern
hybrids, common especially in the northern hemisphere, have a range of colours from which only a true natural blue
is absent. All types of roses are grown in
the Biella area: botanical species, historic
varieties, new bush, standard, and climbing hybrids. The area is famous for the
wealth of varieties grown.
