Independent Novel Projects
Independent Novel Projects You will be required to read one book and complete one project per quarter. You may choose from any of the suggested book list or choose one of your own, but it must meet the following requirements: At least 800 lexile level Cannot have a movie (i.e. Harry Potter, Hunger Games, Twilight) Your project will receive the following points: 50 points: Within the first two weeks of the quarter, you must show your book to the teacher and have the lexile level recorded. 50 points: Reading log—every time you read your book, you must complete a paragraph with your thoughts and opinions about what you read. This is not merely a summary of the story, but must contain your reactions to what you read. 100 points: Book project—at the end of every quarter, you will bring a project to class (see below) and present them in small groups. 10% of your evaluation will be based upon how the group evaluates your project. Each quarter you must choose a different project to complete. You may choose from this list, or if you have another idea, present it to me for approval. ALL PROJECTS MUST DEMONSTRATE A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF THE NOVEL AND BE IN FINAL DRAFT FORMAT (NO PENCIL). 1. Write a one page letter to the author critiquing his/her book for strengths and weaknesses, or write a letter to the main character giving him/her advice. USE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM THE NOVEL TO SUPPORT YOUR CLAIMS. 2. Choose four literary devices and create a poster that gives detailed examples of how the book used these literary devices. MUST INCLUDE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES WITH EXPLANATIONS 3. Write an alternate story or a sequel from the perspective of the main character. The story must be true to the character's voice and personality. USE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM THE NOVEL AS SUPPORT. 4. Make a diorama showing a pivotal scene from the book. Add a paragraph explaining the scene and why it is important. USE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES IN YOUR PARAGRAPH. 5. Make a comic strip that highlights the main scenes from the book. You must include at least six frames and have specific explanation of the scene for each frame. 6. Make the front page of a newspaper that highlights at least three events from the book. It must be written in journalistic style and INCLUDE SPECIFIC DETAILS FROM THE BOOK. 7. A trivia board game that includes at least 10 questions and answers from the book. The questions must be detailed and show understanding of the entire novel, not just a specific part.
