ITALIAN STAGE 1 COURSE DESCRIPTION
The following is a broad outline of what will be covered in Italian Stage 1. The course
detail is explained in terms of: language topics and grammar, i.e. what you can do
with the language plus the main tenses and structures covered. Please note that
exact detail and order may vary depending on choice of class, coursebook and
particular needs of the group. At beginner level the tutor will assume no prior
knowledge of the language
Topic areas:
1. Introduce yourself to someone and give some basic information about
yourself such as where you live/what you do/your age/what you
drink/what you want to eat.
2. Talk about other people and give the same kind of information about them
as in (1) above.
3. Ask someone else about their habits, what they do, where they live,
where they work etc.
4. Tell the time in Italian.
5. Ask for what you want in a shop.
6. Describe people’s appearance, clothing etc.
7. Express your likes/dislikes.
8. Give basic directions in Italian.

Main Grammar Points:
present simple of regular are/ere/ire verbs e.g. parlare, vendere +
servire and most common irregular verbs: essere, avere, fare, andare,
sapere, dire, venire etc..
subject pronouns: io, tu, lei, etc..
simple and combined prepositions: a, da, di, in, con, senza, per / della,
al etc..
question words: chi, che ( cosa ), quale, dove, quando, quanto, come,
perché
masculine + feminine articles: un, uno, un’, una, il, lo etc.
adjective noun agreements, e.g. un vino rosso / due vini rossi
possibly a brief introduction into the use of the Italian Perfect Tense to talk
about past actions and things we’ve done e.g. il sabato ho lasciato il mio
lavoro / ho fatto la spesa
By the end of the course you should be able to communicate with a native Italian
speaker who asked you the following questions:
Da quanto tempo è in Italia?
È la prima volta che viene in Italia?
Come si chiama il tuo amico ?
Che cosa Le piace della Sua città?
A che ora parte il treno per Torino ?
Scusi, come faccio per andare all’ Azienda di Turismo ?

In trying to choose the correct level, you may have to balance what you know of the
language (grammar, vocabulary etc) with your ability to speak it, since, depending on your
personal history of learning the language, you may be stronger in one area than the other.
ITALIAN STAGE 2 COURSE DESCRIPTION
The following is a broad description of what will be covered in STAGE 2. Please note
that exact detail and order may vary depending on choice of class, coursebook and
particular needs of the group. The tutor will assume that students will have
completed stage 1 or equivalent.
1 Revision and Consolidation of Stage 1:
• talk about yourself, friends and family, describe where you live
• explain your daily routine, likes and dislikes
• ask for information and directions
Main grammar points: present tense of regular are/ere/ire verbs, e.g. parlare,
vendere + servire plus present tense of main irregular verbs essere, avere,
fare etc..Simple prepositions: in, a, da etc..
Vocabulary revision: numbers, adjectives, family, routine, time and days,
food, drink and travel.

Main Topic areas covered in Stage 2:
talk about what you did yesterday
tell the story of your life so far
talk about past holidays, visits to Italy etc.

describe good/bad experiences you’ve had over the previous year

say what you + your friends were doing last night from 8.00 to 10.00 pm

Main grammar points covered in Stage 2:

• imperfect tense for past description, routine and continuous actions e.g.
parlavi, vendeva, era, avevo, etc…

- pluperfect ( past perfect ) tense to relate different past events, e.g.
la festa aveva cominciato quando siamo arrivati
- present subjunctive to express opinions hopes, desires etc.., spero che non
sia molto caro, voglio che ( lui ) venga etc…
- Conditional tenses to talk about what you’d do, wishes and other
hypothetical situations che cosa faresti con una vacanza di un anno?

- topical discussion ( pair/small group/whole class ) on such areas as the
arts, politics and current affairs etc..
- written work on areas of interest to students, e.g. Il Cinema Italiano, La
Cultura etc.
- short oral presentations on a subject of students’ choice
- TV/video material reflecting current affairs in Italy
* the above is only a guide. At this level it is expected that participants
suggest specific topic areas which reflect their interests.

- further consolidation and practice of all main tenses
- further work and practice on subjunctives:

- additional work on grammar and structure as necessary

ITALIANO Livello 4 Course Description
Questo corso è stato creato per permettere agli studenti che hanno completato il
normale ciclo di corsi di Italiano a DACE (o equivalenti) di continuare a fare pratica e
a perfezionare il loro italiano. L’avere completato un simile ciclo di studi non è
tuttavia l’unica condizione necessaria per poter frequentare con successo il Livello 4:
si esige dagli studenti l’abilità di seguire conversazioni che si svolgono in modo e a
velocità naturali, nonchè una padronanza della lingua tale da partecipare a queste
conversazioni, senza grandi aiuti da parte dell’insegnante. Se questa dimestichezza
non è ancora stata raggiunta, si consiglia ai potenziali studenti di iscriversi
inizialmente al corso Level 4, che può essere ripetuto a piacere.
Il corso varierà a seconda delle scelte dell’insegnante e delle richieste e delle
necessità degli studenti. Dato che molti studenti scelgono di frequentare la classe
anno dopo anno, non c’è molta ripetizione di argomenti ed esercizi, e non c’è una
struttura fissa per questo corso.
La grammatica italiana sarà stata studiata nei suoi vari aspetti in precedenza, quindi
si dedicherà tempo al ripasso e allo studio di alcune strutture più eleganti e meno
usuali. Lo scopo principale sarà di consolidare le basi, eliminare errori ed incertezze,
migliorare il vocabolario, raffinare lo stile, e riconoscere linguaggi settoriali.
1 Come ai livelli precedenti si svolgeranno discussioni su una varietà di
argomenti,ma ad un livello più alto:
- cronaca, arte, cultura; desideri e speranze; scenari ipotetici; libri, film, spettacoli;
esperienze e interessi personali;
2 Alcuni aspetti particolari del Livello 4 hanno in passato incluso:
- presentazioni su argomenti a scelta, individualmente o in gruppo
- scrittura di temi o composizioni su vari argomenti
- lettura di un testo italiano durante l’arco dell’anno (romanzo, racconti, ecc), da
usare come punto di discussione e per migliorare l’uso della lingua
- visione di film con sottotitoli in italiano, da usare come spunto di riflessione e per
raffinare l’abilità di ascolto, per apprezzare le varietà regionali e dialettali
dell’italiano- lavoro di gruppo per proporre argomenti in difesa di una data
posizione (per esempio, in termini giuridici con linguaggio specializzato o, in
termini più creativi, esercizi di marketing)
- espressioni idiomatiche (essere una cima, andare a tutta birra...)
- linguaggi settoriali (giornalismo, scienze, sport, burocrazia...)
3 In termini di grammatica ci si possono aspettare argomenti di un tenore simili a
questi visti in passato:
- revisione dei tempi e dei modi dei verbi, incluse forme irregolari; consecutio
temporum; congiuntivi; pronomi (idefiniti, interrogativi, relativi, combinati...); frasi
ipotetiche (realtà e irrealtà); preposizioni (specialmente quelle fisse richieste da
certiverbi o sostantivi); forme passive; forme impersonali; modi non finiti: infinito,
gerundio e participio
