Lezione 7A.2 Usage of the futuro semplice The futuro semplice is generally used like the future tense in English; however, there are some exceptions. •
These words and expressions are commonly used to talk about the future in Italian. Cercherò un appartamento questo weekend. -­‐ I will look for an apartment this weekend. I miei arriveranno a Bologna fra tre giorni. -­‐ My parents will arrive in Bologna in three days. •
The futuro semplice is frequently used after the adverbs appena (as soon as), quando (when), and se (if) when talking about future events or actions. Note that English typically uses the present tense in these cases. In Italian, use the future tense for both parts of the sentence. -­‐Appena avremo i soldi, potremo trasferirci in un appartamento. As soon as we have the money, we can move into an apartment. -­‐La mia compagna di camera pulirà il frigo quando tornerà. My roommate will clean the fridge when she returns. -­‐Cosa faranno se non troveranno una camera doppia? What will they do if they don’t find a double room? •
The futuro semplice is often used to conjecture or to express probability. This is referred to as the futuro di probabilità and is equivalent to English expressions in the present tense with probably, must, or could. Note that the futuro di probabilità actually refers to the present, not the future. -­‐Dov’è Maria? -­‐ Sarà in cucina. She is probably in the kitchen. -­‐Che ore sono? – Saranno le otto e mezza. It could be 8:30. -­‐Chi è quella donna? -­‐ Sarà la nostra professoressa. She must be our professor. •
As in English, in Italian the present tense can be used instead of the future to express an action or event that will definitely take place, especially in the near future. This usage is most common in colloquial Italian. -­‐Mia madre mi porta la cassettiera dopodomani. – My mom is bringing me the dresser the day after tomorrow. -­‐Cosa fate questo weekend? Andate in centro? -­‐ What are you doing this weekend? Are you going downtown? Provalo! Metti le frasi seguenti in ordine di tempo.
