Last week, I dkcussed the numerous
editorial practices that make it difficult
for ISF to accurately index the author
addresses contained in journal articles. 1
Since millions of reprint requests per
year are based on these author addresses, it is crucial that our information
be as accurate and as timely as possible.
Editorial policies that compel us to “dig
up” and painstakingly verify information
that should have been readily available
cause our readers to suffer-both
in
terms of the cost of our services and
their lack of timeliness.
Thk is a message we have repeated in
numerous
discussions
for almost 20
years. Although 1S1 regularly brings its
complaints and suggestions to the attention of journal editors, contrary to the
widespread notion, we alone cannot accomplish these changes. Peer pressure,
however, may induce even the most lethargic editor to budge. As a regular
contributor to a journal, you can accomplish more than we can. So last week, we
published a list of offending journals in
the social and behavioral sciences and in
the arts and humanities. We asked Current Contents” (C@) readers to write to

the publishers of any listed journal to
which they contribute.
This week, we are publishing a list of
journals in the life sciences; agriculture,
biology, and environmental
sciences:
clinical practice; engineering, technology, and applied sciences; and physical
and chemical sciences. The titles of the
journals are listed in Table 1. Their publishers are listed in Table 2. Figures 1-3
illustrate some typical problems. Once
more, we taut ion that the list is not comprehensive. And in fairness to some of
the editors whose journals appear in
Table 1, it should be kept in mind that a
few may have responded to ISI’S suggestions between the time thk essay was
prepared and the time it was published.
It may not be self-evident, but the five
sections into which the table is divided
correspond to the five CC editions covering each of these categories.
