How hot is sand?
If you have ever walked barefoot on a sandy beach on a sunny day, you know how hot sand
can be. But how hot is the sand below the surface?
Procedure
1. Read and complete a lab safety form.
2. Position a desk lamp over a
container of sand that is at least
7 cm deep.
3. Place one thermometer on the
surface of the sand and bury the tip
of another thermometer about
5 cm below the surface. Record the
temperature on each thermometer
in your Science Journal.
4. Turn on the lamp and record the
temperatures again after 10 minutes.
Analyze and Conclude
1. Describe the temperatures of the sand at the surface and below the surface.

Key Concept Desert soil contains a high percentage of sand. Based on your
results, predict ways in which species are adapted to living in an environment where
the soil is mostly sand.
